Drone-based applications involving real-time video analytics are emerging to serve diverse situational awareness use cases ranging from precision agriculture to disaster response. Hence, there is a need to study robust security measures to ensure the integrity of information and safeguard communication, as well as data transmission in drone video analytics. In this paper, we investigate methods to enhance the security management of drone video analytics in terms of reliability and integrity within realistic settings using testbed resources in the NSF-supported AERPAW infrastructure. Specifically, we study security mechanisms to model and detect threats such as Replay, Packet Injection, and Physical Capture attacks caused by situations in dynamic and potentially adversarial network environments. In addition, we generate balanced datasets through Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) to address challenges posed by unbalanced datasets that are common when applying machine learning models for attack detection impacting drone video analytics traffic. Our experimental environment in AERPAW involves a setup for secure communication through a MAVLink-based (open-standard) drone communication protocol that uses continuous authentication via digital signatures. Our experiment results compare the efficiency gains achieved through secure MAVLink-based communication with unsecured counterparts, examining factors such as packet encryption, digital signatures, and nonces. Further, our results provide valuable insights into the adaptability of security mechanisms for drone video analytics within realistic environments.

In an era marked by the advanced capabilities of social robots in personal and public spaces, the issue of pervasive data collection by these entities becomes increasingly pertinent. Social robots, deployed by government entities, hospitals, and corporations, are at the forefront of gathering sensitive personal data, necessitating careful consideration of privacy concerns. The vast amounts of data collected by these robots, while beneficial for decision-making and fostering research, also pose significant privacy risks. In particular, the challenge intensifies when robots collect and potentially share data that includes sensitive personal information. This paper presents a user-friendly Differential Privacy (DP) library that addresses this challenge. The library incorporates a risk threshold and evaluates the potential impact of data disclosure to accurately quantify privacy levels. Designed for nontechnical users, it enables the secure release of statistical data without the risk of privacy breaches. With privacy breaches and re-identification becoming increasingly common, this library offers a robust solution for safeguarding individuals' privacy while facilitating the sharing of valuable insights.

Molecular subtyping of cancer is recognized as a critical and challenging upstream task for personalized therapy. Existing deep learning methods have achieved significant performance in this domain when abundant data samples are available. However, the acquisition of densely labeled samples for cancer molecular subtypes remains a significant challenge for conventional data-intensive deep learning approaches. In this work, we focus on the few-shot molecular subtype prediction problem in heterogeneous and small cancer datasets, aiming to enhance precise diagnosis and personalized treatment. We first construct a new few-shot dataset for cancer molecular subtype classification and auxiliary cancer classification, named TCGA Few-Shot, from existing publicly available datasets. To effectively leverage the relevant knowledge from both tasks, we introduce a task-specific embedding-based meta-learning framework (TSEML). TSEML leverages the synergistic strengths of a model-agnostic meta-learning (MAML) approach and a prototypical network (ProtoNet) to capture diverse and fine-grained features. Comparative experiments conducted on the TCGA FewShot dataset demonstrate that our TSEML framework achieves superior performance in addressing the problem of few-shot molecular subtype classification. © 2024 IEEE.

Agricultural production vitally contribute to country's economic growth and food needs; however, it depends upon the production and quality of crops. Plants are affected easily due to climate changes and low-quality water. Plants health is examined manually by farmers or pathologists; however, it is not viable to examine each plant regularly due to larger areas of field and limited human resource. If the plant disease gets diagnosed at early stage, the precautionary measures can be taken on time and quality can be improved. There are several solutions available based on modern machine learning and deep learning techniques however, precise prediction and classification is challenging due to the limitations of low light or blurry images. We propose a deep learning-based approach which classifies the healthy and diseases plant using blurry images. Our method addresses the problem using improved layers activation, lesser parameters, using radiant pixels and active neurons. We improved the classification of smaller size and blur images by adding the pooling and dropout layers. Our solution addresses the vanishing gradient and high validation loss problems using a smaller number of parameters as compared to other convolutional neural networks. We evaluated the performance of the proposed method on plant village dataset consisting of a diverse collection of 20600 images. We achieved overall 98.3 % accuracy by minimizing the vanishing gradient, high validation loss and overfitting problem.

In modern era where software development is of vital importance, software developers are challenged with conditions like Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) which hinders their ability to work effectively. Furthermore, people with difficulties with using their hands also find it challenging to program in the traditional manner. As a solution, coding with one's voice has been experimented with, but current solutions lack interactivity and are harder to use and setup leaving much room for improvement in this domain. In this research work, by using input classifier models with accuracies over 90%, intent classifiers with accuracies over 70%, code parsing and various human computer interaction techniques, we developed a conversationally interactive, programming language agnostic, easy to setup and easy to use Voice Coding Assistant. This will potentially help a global audience of programmers to achieve their goals and improve productivity and lead a healthier life. We have named the system thus developed, "Venic". © 2022 IEEE.

The Robustness of Spiking Neural Networks in Communication and its Application towards Network Efficiency in Federated Learning

Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) have recently gained significant interest in on-chip learning in embedded devices and emerged as an energy-efficient alternative to conventional Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). However, to extend SNNs to a Federated Learning (FL) setting involving collaborative model training, the communication between the local devices and the remote server remains the bottleneck, which is often restricted and costly. In this paper, we first explore the inherent robustness of SNNs under noisy communication in FL. Building upon this foundation, we propose a novel Federated Learning with Top-κ Sparsification (FLTS) algorithm to reduce the bandwidth usage for FL training. We discover that the proposed scheme with SNNs allows more bandwidth savings compared to ANNs without impacting the model’s accuracy. Additionally, the number of parameters to be communicated can be reduced to as low as 6% of the size of the original model. We further improve the communication efficiency by enabling dynamic parameter compression during model training. Extensive experiment results demonstrate that our proposed algorithms significantly outperform the baselines in terms of communication cost and model accuracy and are promising for practical network-efficient FL with SNNs. Automated cognitive assessment tools are state-of-the-art in assessing cognition development. Due to the low availability of resources, building automated cognitive ability evaluation tools is challenging. This study focuses on developing machine learning models using a limited amount of data to assess Reasoning IQ, Knowledge IQ, Mental Chronometry and Attention-levels of Sinhala-speaking children between the age of 7 to 9 years. Our solution includes Sinhala speech recognition systems, image classification models, gaze estimation, blink count detection and facial expression recognition models to evaluate the above four cognitive ability measuring factors. Open domain speech recognition has been used to evaluate complex Sinhala child verbal responses and limited vocabulary responses were assessed using an end-to-end speech recognition system, respectively achieving 40.1% WER and 97.14% accuracy. Additionally, the image classification models for handwritten Sinhala letter recognition and two shape recognition models have gained 97%, 89% and 99% accuracy. The linear regression model for attention level evaluation that utilizes the inputs from a combination of eye-gaze estimation, facial expression recognition and blink rate detection models has gained 85% accuracy. © 2022 IEEE.

The great majority of manual processes have been automated in the current day. Nonetheless, there is no reliable approach for evaluating UML diagrams for plagiarism and correctness. Unified Modeling Language (UML) provides the basis for UML diagrams. UML Diagrams are typically used to graphically express a system's stakeholders, activities, objects, and classes to get a deep knowledge of a particular system. UML diagrams are widely used by industry experts as well as beginners. Class diagrams and use case diagrams are the most commonly used diagrams in UML. Though most Computer science-related students get assessed in UML modelling, diagram plagiarism isn't considered in most exams since it's a tedious task to perform. The proposed system automates capturing details in UML diagram components and generating a model answer from the given question scenario to compare the diagrams and calculate the plagiarism percentage with the correction percentage. © 2022 IEEE.

People having visual impairment can't perform routine tasks on their own such that they are obliged to perform even the simplest task with assistance. Since their issue can't be resolved with visual glasses or lenses, the various mode of advancing technologies is playing an immense role in aiding them. Plenty of research work and development of gadgets have been proposed regarding the assistance of visually impaired people. From deep learning along with sensor-based initiative systems to various ranges of software have been developed but until now every system or software heeds on a particular feature. This article is based on purposing the idea of developing a cross-platform application named Optic Ally, intelligent assistance for visually impaired people that will provide all salient features in it regarding their assistance. For this idea of Optic Ally application, a novel model-driven framework is introduced that comprises a meta-model, tree editor, and graphical modeling tool that is Sirius based with drag and drop palette. The modeling and visualization of the features of this app are done using the Sirius-based graphical modeling tool. Moreover, a case study has been demonstrated for the validity of the proposed framework. The outcome of the case study proves that the proposed framework is competent in modeling and visualizing features effectively. The initial developed stage of the application is also shown in this article. Optic Ally application features include object detection, object finder, location, voice assistance, guardian help, link account and profile setup for the visually impaired user whereas for the guardian user the features include location, profile setup and guardian help © 2022 IEEE.
