Analyzing and evaluating students' progress in any learning environment is stressful and time consuming if done using traditional analysis methods. This is further exasperated by the increasing number of students due to the shift of focus toward integrating the Internet technologies in education and the focus of academic institutions on moving toward e-Learning, blended, or online learning models. As a result, the topic of student performance prediction has become a vibrant research area in recent years. To address this, machine learning and data mining techniques have emerged as a viable solution. To that end, this work proposes the use of deep learning techniques (CNN and RNN-LSTM) to predict the students' performance at the midpoint stage of the online course delivery using three distinct datasets collected from three different regions of the world. Experimental results show that deep learning models have promising performance as they outperform other optimized traditional ML models in two of the three considered datasets while also having comparable performance for the third dataset. © 2023 IEEE.

The pleasure that often comes with eating can be further enhanced with intelligent technology, as the field of human-food interaction suggests. However, knowledge on how to design such pleasure-supporting eating systems is limited. To begin filling this knowledge gap, we designed "GustosonicSense", a novel gustosonic eating system that utilizes wireless earbuds for sensing different eating and drinking actions with a machine learning algorithm and trigger playful sounds as a way to facilitate pleasurable eating experiences. We present the findings from our design and a study that revealed how we can support the "stimulation", "hedonism", and "reflexivity" for playful human-food interactions. Generalizability of CNN Architectures for Face Morph Presentation Attack

Automatic border control systems are wide spread in modern airports worldwide. Morphing attacks on face biometrics is a serious threat that undermines the security and reliability of face recognition systems deployed in airports and border controls. Therefore, developing a robust Machine Learning (ML) system is necessary to prevent criminals crossing borders with fake identifications especially since it has been shown that security officers cannot detect morphs better than machines. In this study, we investigate the generalization power of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures against morphing attacks. The investigation utilizes 5 distinct CNNs namely ShuffleNet, DenseNet201, VGG16, EffecientNet-B0 and InceptionResNet-v2. Each CNN architecture represents a well-known family of CNN models in terms of number of parameters, architectural design and performance across various computer vision applications. To ensure robust evaluation, we employ 4 different datasets (Utrecht, London, Defacto and KurdFace) that contain a diverse range of digital face images which cover variations in ethnicity, gender, age, lighting condition and camera setting. One of the fundamental concepts of ML system design is the ability to generalize effectively to previously unseen data, hence not only we evaluate the performance of CNN models within individual datasets but also explore their performance across combined datasets and investigating each dataset in testing phase only too. Experimental results on more than 8 thousand images (genuine and morph) from the 4 datasets show that InceptionResNet-v2 generalizes better to unseen data and outperforms the other 4 CNN models. © 2023, CC BY.

Cloud Platforms are heterogeneous, and users may face interoperability issues migrating applications or exchanging data among distinct clouds due, for instance, to the lack of standards solutions. Several solutions have been proposed to overcome lock-in situations, and middleware platforms are one of them. A semantic interoperability solution named middleware for Data as a Service (DaaS)/Database as a Service (DBaaS) and software as a Service (SaaS)—MIDAS has been developed to overcome this lock-in issue. It is an intermediate communication layer to retrieve data from DaaS or DBaaS through a Structured Query Language (SQL) or a Not Only SQL (NoSQL) created at the SaaS level. MIDAS is a platform for software execution, but software development needs support for its entire life cycle. Therefore, we propose the Model drIven Approach for MIDAS (MIAMI), which enables the specification of platform-independent middleware models and their use to generate code on different cloud platforms. MIAMI comprises a Domain-Specific Modeling Language (DSML) that enables middleware models and a transformation specification, which defines how these models can be converted to code. MIAMI offers a strategy for MIDAS specification and code generation phases to help middleware developers’ activities. MIAMI was applied to code generation specifications in Cloud Foundry, Amazon Web Services, OpenShift, and Heroku providers to evaluate our approach. This specification shows MIAMI’s feasibility and points out that MDD is a promising approach to improving cloud interoperability solutions. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Artificial intelligence-driven Chatbots, especially large language models (LLMs) like GPT-4, represent significant progress in digital education. These models excel in mimicking human-like text and transforming learning and teaching methods. This study examines the development, application, and impact of LLMs in education. It highlights their role in automating instructional tasks and promoting personalized learning experiences. Despite integration concerns and ethical debates, LLMs showcase the potential of AI to improve educational practices. Our research concludes that LLMs offer transformative opportunities for education. However, their incorporation requires careful ethical considerations, data privacy measures, and a balance between human educators and AI technologies. The findings suggest strategies for integrating LLMs into educational frameworks to enhance learning outcomes while preserving educational integrity. © The Author(s) 2025.

A Novel Poisoned Water Detection Method Using Smartphone Embedded Wi-Fi Technology and Machine Learning Algorithms

Water is a necessary fluid to the human body and automatic checking of its quality and cleanness is an ongoing area of research. One such approach is to present the liquid to various types of signals and make the amount of signal attenuation an indication of the liquid category. In this article, we have utilized the Wi-Fi signal to distinguish clean water from poisoned water via training different machine learning algorithms. The Wi-Fi access points (WAPs) signal is acquired via equivalent smartphone-embedded Wi-Fi chipsets, and then Channel-State-Information CSI measures are extracted and converted into feature vectors to be used as input for machine learning classification algorithms. The measured amplitude and phase of the CSI data are selected as input features into four classifiers k-NN, SVM, LSTM, and Ensemble. The experimental results show that the model is adequate to differentiate poison water from clean water with a classification accuracy of 89% when LSTM is applied, while 92% classification accuracy is achieved when the AdaBoost-Ensemble classifier is applied. © 2023, CC BY.

Agile methods promise to achieve high productivity and provide high-quality software. Agile software development is the most important approach that has spread through the world of software development over the past decade. software team productivity measurement is essential in agile teams to increase the performance of software development. Due to the prevalence of agile methodologies and increasing competition of software development companies, software team productivity has become one of the crucial challenges for agile software companies and teams. Awareness of the level of team productivity can help them to achieve better estimation results on the time and cost of the projects. However, to measure software productivity, there is no definitive solution or approach whether in traditional and agile software development teams that lead to the occurrence of many problems in achieving a reliable definition of software productivity. Hence, this study aims to propose a statistical model to assess the team's productivity in agile teams. A survey was conducted with forty software companies and measured the impact of six factors of the team on productivity in these companies. The results show that team effectiveness factors including inter-team relationship, quality conformance by the team, team vision, team leader, and requirements handled by the team had a significant impact on the team's productivity. Moreover, the results also state that inter-team relations affect the most on software teams' productivity. Finally, the model fit test showed that 80% of productivity depends on team effectiveness factors. © 2021 IEEE.

This research investigates the perceptions of cybersecurity among older adults in Malaysia, aged 60 years and above, who are reliant on technology for basic activities. The data from 331 participants showed that 30.8% were online for 4–8 hours daily, while 3.3% were completely disconnected. Interestingly, more than half of the respondents were unaware of cybersecurity threats, especially malware and ransomware, which put their data in jeopardy. While there is some awareness related to unauthorized access and computer fraud, knowledge gaps remain significant, and effective educational interventions are thus needed. Informal, self-directed learning appears to be a widespread way of acquiring skills in this age group, often supplemented by community workshops and peer networks. Given that almost half of the older adults spend considerable time online, improving their digital skills in tandem with their support systems is an important goal for enhancing their online experiences. It indicates the need for a twin approach: enhancing cybersecurity awareness with specialized educational programs, alongside developing flexible opportunities for informal learning. Educational institutions and relevant policies are encouraged to prioritize building hands-on, specific cybersecurity education for seniors. Also, user interface design considering cybersecurity-related issues can make using the technological environment as user-friendly and secure as possible. These strategies will contribute to creating an inclusive digital society, where older adults are confident and safe in using digital technologies while continuously contributing to their personal and professional development.

Precise stock market prediction is crucial for investors, but the volatility of the stock market is influenced by multiple factors such as public sentiments, business news, and related product volatility. While several algorithms have been proposed to predict the stock exchange index based on historical data, they are not ideal as external factors play a critical role in market volatility. To address this issue, we proposed a machine learning model that incorporates historical data with external factors such as social media sentiments, oil and gold trends, and financial news data to enhance prediction accuracy. Our study used HPQ, IBM, ORCL, and MSFT stock market datasets to validate the effectiveness of the proposed model, including an analysis of the impact of Covid19 on companies. Our experimental results showed the highest accuracy of 87.2% using oil and sentiment datasets. Additionally, we identified that social media significantly affects IBM stocks, and the GBM (Gradient Boosting Classifier) classifier produced consistent results. © 2023, CC BY.

Federated learning is a distributed learning solution that achieves high-quality machine learning models while ensuring privacy and collaboration among various end devices. However, different kinds of end devices can lead to an unstable training process due to limited and dynamic communication and computation resources. Federated Dropout is an important technique for mitigating such resource bottlenecks by randomly removing a fixed percentage of activations of model components. However, most of the existing FL dropout methods cannot effectively utilize the distinguished characteristics of different clients or fail to automatically adapt to end device heterogeneity. In this paper, we thus propose Adaptive Federated Dropout with Reinforcement Learning (AFD-RL). AFD-RL employs reinforcement learning technology to adapt to the clients' unbalanced computation and communication resources and provide a personalized dropout strategy for each client. By automatically selecting suitable model components for each client in each communication round, AFD-RL achieves better accuracy with fewer communication rounds. Extensive experiments validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in improving training efficiency and inference accuracy. © 2023 IEEE.
