The aim of this paper is to present an approach to tackle the task of opinion question answering and text summarization. Following the guidelines TAC 2008 Opinion Summarization Pilot task, we propose new methods for each of the major components of the process. In particular, for the information retrieval, opinion mining and summarization stages. The performance obtained improves with respect to the state of the art by approximately 12.50%, thus concluding that the suggested approaches for these three components are adequate. © 2011 Association for Computational *** right reserved.

The recent advances in Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) research have enabled investigations into collaborative efforts that equip participants with heterogeneous technological configurations in various degrees of immersion. Results from this work are interesting and may seem futuristic which can cause challenges in understanding the underlying impacts and gaining insights. This paper describes an attempt in identifying the fundamental elements of a digital interaction and remote collaboration;and proposes the Cross Reality Collaboration Framework (CRCF) to provide a unified platform for discussing, comparing, and contrasting these efforts. Though in an early stage of development, the current iteration of CRCF is capable of analyzing configurations that are based on drastically different technologies (e.g., an AR application vs. a location aware mobile application), comparing them, and revealing insights. This paper demonstrates the potentials of CRCF by applying it to analyze popular technological configurations and identifying opportunities for investigations. The paper then describes a prototype solution addressing the identified opportunity and presents results from a testing environment involving four collaborators with distinct technological configurations. © 2017 IEEE.

Binarization represents a key role in many document image analysis workflows. The current state of the art considers the use of supervised learning, and specifically deep neural networks. However, it is very difficult for the same model to work successfully in a number of document styles, since the set of potential domains is very heterogeneous. We study a multi-source domain adaptation strategy for binarization. Within this scenario, we look into a novel hypothesis where a specialized binarization model must be selected to be used over a target domain, instead of a single model that tries to generalize across multiple domains. The problem then boils down to, given several specialized models and a new target set, deciding which model to use. We propose here a simple way to address this question by using a domain classifier, that estimates which of the source models must be considered to binarize the new target domain. Our experiments on several datasets, including different text styles and music scores, show that our initial hypothesis is quite promising, yet the way to deal with the decision of which model to use still shows great room for improvement. © 2021 The authors and IOS Press.

Peer assessment has the potential to encourage and enhance critical thinking skills and to help students progress toward a learning model where evidence, rather than the proclamations of an Authority, is the basis for understanding. This paper describes the use of peer assessment in the algorithms course. Our results indicate that students are able to apply assessment skills to more complex problems as the course proceeds, that there is a high correlation between the quality of their assessments and their performance in non-peer assessment course activities, and that in their assessments students tend to identify high-level errors more frequently than low-level errors. In recent years, wearable Internet of Things (IoT) devices, such as brain-sensing headsets, have gained popularity for their ability to provide insights into users' well-being. These devices record Electroencephalography (EEG) signals, which are traditionally used in medical settings to monitor brain activity. With the advent of affordable EEG headsets, this technology has become more accessible to the general public. However, these devices are not without security vulnerabilities, which hackers can exploit to intercept users' EEG data. Recent research has demonstrated that EEG signals, when processed and analyzed using machine learning, can be used to infer user conditions or activities, such as muscle movements, emotions, or even limited keyboard *** this paper, we explore the potential of deep learning to infer the digits and words typed on a keyboard based on a person's recorded EEG signals, achieving high accuracy. If deep learning techniques can be employed to deduce user activity from EEG signals, they could potentially expose sensitive and private information, such as password entry. Our contributions include demonstrating an attack model by developing and comparing various deep learning models to infer the digits and words typed by a person wearing an EEG headset. We also detail the process of reading raw EEG signals from a consumer-grade EEG headset and implementing a series of noise filters and signal transformations to refine the signal samples. Finally, we develop and test both CNN and RNN models for EEG signal classification to accurately infer passwords. © 2024 IEEE.

With the explosion of data in the digital age, it is an important yet challenging task to extract meaningful information from long texts. In this paper, a novel framework is presented to facilitate users in extracting summaries and keywords from long texts at real-time. It uses a hybrid approach based on feature extraction and unsupervised learning to generate quality summaries. In addition, it integrates machine learning with semantic methods to extract keywords and phrases from the source text. The framework is deployed as a mobile app that allows users to manage, share and listen to the extracted information to improve user experience. To test the effectiveness of the work, experimental and research evaluations are carried out on DUC 2002 dataset using ROGUE parameters. Results demonstrate a higher F1-score than the state-of-the-art methods used for extractive summarization on the same dataset. Experiment also shows an accuracy of 70% for the keyword extraction method, which is in par with other work in the field. © 2023 IEEE.

Communicative intentions are one of the linguistic elements that usually determine the content of any text or message we want to express in our communicative interactions. With the purpose of contributing to the improvement of natural language generation systems, so that they can take the communicative intention as one of the starting points that will determine the structure and content of the message generated, the aim of this project is to create a communicative intentions annotation scheme based on the taxonomy presented in the Speech Act Theory. To do so, the scheme will be created with the help of a linguistic corpus and subsequently tested within a natural language generation system. In this way, it will be possible to check up to which point communicative intentions improve the planning stage of the text to be generated automatically, guiding the rest of decisions to be made by the system in order to create automatic messages with more similar results to any manually created text. © 2021 Copyright for this paper by its authors. Communicative intentions are one of the linguistic elements that usually determine the content of any message we want to express in our social interactions. With the purpose of contributing to the improvement of natural language processing systems, this thesis aims to create a communicative intention annotation scheme based on the taxonomy presented in the Speech Act Theory. In this way, language processing tools could consider communicative intentions as a starting point to help classify any message and its content depending first on the intention it reflects. To do so, the scheme will be created with the help of an already annotated corpus of Spanish tweets and subsequently evaluated by external annotators so that we can confirm the appropriateness and reliability of the tagged intentions before applying the scheme to an NLP system. Thus, it will be possible to check up to which point communicative intentions can improve the identification of the purpose of a message in an already created NLP system so that we can gain more linguistic information from any text automatically. © 2022 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 5% of the world's population have hearing impairments. Sign language plays a significant role in bridging the communication gap between people of muteness, persons with hearing loss and general public. Currently most sign language learning systems have a considerable deficiency in real time practice and evaluation. This research aims to develop a sign language learning mobile application, called Master-ASL, to support American sign language (ASL) education through learning and assessment processes. It uses machine learning and multimedia presentations to provide an easy, interactive, and portable learning environment. In brief, users can learn all the ASL alphabets and digits through multimedia presentations in the application. In addition, different types of assessments are developed using the constructivist learning and game-oriented approaches. The game environment incorporates the concept of machine learning object recognition technology to engage users in matching ASL characters with corresponding pictures, and vice versa. The proposed framework is successfully implemented on smart phone platform and is demonstrated through user studies to help keep users motivated to learn more by performing tasks to construct their knowledge. © 2023 IEEE.

In this article, we present an investigation with its conclusions and results on the pivotal role of Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies in the ongoing digital transformation of our society, specifically within local public administrations. Our research is focused on the utilization of chatbots as tools for interaction, information retrieval, and provision, which we justify as the central objective to our study. This advanced tool facilitates the acquisition of crucial information for public managers regarding usage patterns, behaviors, statistics, and other data collected from citizens, tourists, or other groups interacting with their local public administration. Monitoring will be conducted via indicators and data compiled in a control panel or dashboard, aiding data-driven decision-making, enhancing user experience, and increasing satisfaction. The justification for employing chatbots as a communication channel lies in their simplicity, ease of understanding, and user-friendly nature. Key contributions of this NLP tool include the selection, compilation, and classification of datasets, as well as the provision of various functionalities (such as search, reading comprehension, chat, recommendation, and classification) that ensure users receive the requested information with the highest possible accuracy. The research based on the hypothesis outlined below will ultimately confirm the results presented in this study affirmatively answer the question posed in the title of the article. © 2024 Copyright for this paper by its authors.
