Cyber-Physical System (CPS) integrates sensing, computation, cybernetics, and networking to control a hybrid physical system consisting of different functional subsystems, making the production process more intelligent and controllable. However, cyber-attacks during its operation will lead to abnormal system behaviors or even system breakdowns. In recent years, data-driven anomaly detection methods have been adopted to judge whether the CPS system is under cyber-attacks based on rich sensor measurements to avoid further economic losses or safety issues. However, the multi-process essence of CPS has not been adequately addressed in existing works to locate the processes or points being attacked for in-time actions. In this work, we proposed a Multi-Process Generative Adversarial Network (MP-GAN) framework to detect anomalous CPS statuses and locate cyber-attacks. Specifically, the Long-Short-Term-Memory Recurrent Neural Networks (LSTM-RNN) was adopted as the base model to capture the temporal correlation of time series distributions, and the data was transferred between latent space and data space in a bi-directional manner, which regulated the generator to generate more realistic samples and thus better grasping the underline principles of the system. Moreover, parallel generators were employed to capture system performances at different physical processes, thus localizing the attacked CPS processes. Experiments on three CPS datasets, two collected from the Secure Water Treatment (SWaT) system and one collected from the water Distribution (WADI) system, showed that the proposed MP-GAN framework effectively reported anomalies caused by various cyber-attacks inserted in these complex multiprocess CPSs, which outperforms the state-of-the-art methods and can also locate most of the detected irregularities at the corresponding stages where the attacks were inserted. © 2023 IEEE.

Literature Review: Cyber Security Monitoring in Maritime

In recent years, many cyber incidents have occurred in the maritime sector, targeting the information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) infrastructure. Although several literature review papers have been published in the maritime field, none of the previous studies has focused on cyber security monitoring, which aims at timely detection of cyber attacks with automated methods. The current article addresses this research gap and surveys the methods, algorithms, tools and architectures used for cyber security monitoring in the maritime sector. For the survey, a systematic literature review of cyber security monitoring studies is conducted. The first contribution of this article is the bibliometric analysis of related literature and the identification of the main research themes in previous works. For that purpose, our article presents a taxonomy for existing studies which highlights the main properties of maritime cyber security monitoring research. The second contribution of this article is an in-depth analysis of previous works and the identification of research gaps and limitations in existing literature. Traditional data monetization approaches face challenges related to data protection and logistics. In response, digital data marketplaces have emerged as intermediaries simplifying data transactions. Despite the growing establishment and acceptance of digital data marketplaces, significant challenges hinder efficient data trading. As a result, few companies can derive tangible value from their data, leading to missed opportunities in understanding customers, pricing decisions, and fraud prevention. In this paper, we explore both technical and organizational challenges affecting data monetization. Moreover, we identify areas in need of further research, aiming to expand the boundaries of current knowledge by emphasizing where research is currently limited or lacking. © 2023 Owner/Author.

The software Engineering (SE) workforce is still man-dominated, and there are still fewer women students graduating from Computer Science/software Engineering (CS/SE) courses in most countries. Two major reasons are fewer women enrolling in CS/SE courses and a lower percentage of those women who enrolled completing courses. We wanted to investigate the second reason - the experiences of students within the CS/SE education environment to identify key issues that need improvement to increase women student recruitment and completion. We interviewed 18 CS / SE students to explore their experiences. We requested they review selected SE education content to understand the perception of gender diversity within the SE education environment. Our findings indicate that many women students feel excluded by several behavioural aspects of their fellow men students, as well as by some teachers. We found that gender-biased language and stereotypical images make women students feel more excluded. From the experiences and opinions of our participants, we propose recommendations for higher education CS/SE teachers, universities and researchers to improve gender inclusion in SE teaching environments.

Multi-Granularity Detector for Vulnerability Fixes

With the increasing reliance on Open Source software, users are exposed to third-party library vulnerabilities. software Composition Analysis (SCA) tools have been created to alert users of such vulnerabilities. SCA requires the identification of vulnerability-fixing commits. Prior works have proposed methods that can automatically identify such vulnerability-fixing commits. However, identifying such commits is highly challenging, as only a very small minority of commits are vulnerability fixing. Moreover, code changes can be noisy and difficult to analyze. We observe that noise can occur at different levels of detail, making it challenging to detect vulnerability fixes accurately. To address these challenges and boost the effectiveness of prior works, we propose MiDas (Multi-Granularity Detector for Vulnerability Fixes). Unique from prior works, MiDas constructs different neural networks for each level of code change granularity, corresponding to commit-level, file-level, hunk-level, and line-level, following their natural organization. It then utilizes an ensemble model that combines all base models to generate the final prediction. This design allows MiDas to better handle the noisy and highly imbalanced nature of vulnerability-fixing commit data. Additionally, to reduce the human effort required to inspect code changes, we have designed an effort-aware adjustment for MiDas’s outputs based on commit length. The evaluation results demonstrate that MiDas outperforms the current state-of-the-art baseline in terms of AUC by 4.9% and 13.7% on Java and Python-based datasets, respectively. Furthermore, in terms of two effort-aware metrics, EffortCost@L and Popt@L, MiDas also outperforms the state-of-the-art baseline, achieving improvements of up to 28.2% and 15.9% on Java, and 60% and 51.4% on Python, respectively. © 2023, CC BY.

Solving systems of linear equations is a fundamental problem in scientific computing, which has been extensively researched for decades. One of the most well-known solvers is Algebraic Multigrid (AMG), which is widely used in high performance computing due to its good scalability. But currently accelerating AMG relies on the traditional von Neumann architecture of storage and computation separation, which leads to a large data transmission overhead. In this work, we propose a ReRAM-based processing-in-memory (PIM) architecture named AmgR, which overcomes the limitations of the traditional von Neumann architecture for AMG ***, accelerating AMG on ReRAM is non-trivial, because (1) AMG has many computing kernels of various types; (2) there are irregular operations that cannot be directly performed using matrix-vector multiplication suitable for ReRAM, i.e., aggregation operation; (3) ReRAM has poor write endurance, and a lot of data during AMG acceleration needs to be rewritten into ReRAM, resulting in high write cost. To address these issues, firstly, we propose a flexible architecture, which can realize each kernel of AMG and is reused by many kernels to improve resource utilization. Secondly, we propose a dedicated unit to realize the aggregation operation. Finally, we present a new mapping strategy to greatly reduce the number of data handling and writes. The experimental results show that the performance of AmgR is improved by an average of one and two orders of magnitude compared to HYPRE on the CPU and AmgX on the GPU, respectively, while the energy consumption is reduced by an average of two and three orders of magnitude.

Behavior trees (BTs) have been extensively applied in the area of both computer games and robotics, as the control architectures. However, the construction of BTs is labor-expensive, time-consuming, and even impossible as the complexity of task increases. In this work, we propose a formal verification based synthesis method to automatically construct BTs whose behaviors satisfy the given Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) specifications. Our method first explores candidate BTs by a grammar-based Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS), then the explored BTs are transformed into Communicating Sequential Processes (CSP) models. After that, we invoke the verifier to check the models’ correctness w.r.t. specifications, and provide feedback based on the verification result for guiding the search process. Cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) is widely used in molecular structure determination and drug discovery. Experimental cryo-EM images suffer from the noises introduced by electron beam dose and sample preparation. Although many approaches have been proposed to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for cryo-EM image denoising, the noises are still presented after 3D reconstruction and can obstruct the analysis and visualization of the 3D density map. Here we present DeepTracer-Denoising, a method for 3D electron density map denoising. We employ a 3D Neural Network to learn the pattern of noises and the biological structure from density maps. Our method is designed to work on medium to high-resolution maps ranging from 2.5 A to 10.0A. It is configurated with two modes to tackle both background noise and structural noise in a 3D density map. Our method can correctly identify 97.70% background noise while preserving 96.46% density of the native structure. For the maps that contain structural noise, DeepTracer-Denoising achieves an overall accuracy of 98.95%. © 2022 IEEE.

Comparing Fairness of Generative Mobility Models

Crowd flow data serves as a foundation for predictive modeling, aiding in understanding of city structure [3], epidemics [12], and visitation patterns [9]. Extensive mobility studies have applied variety of models in this area, however there has been little work in quantifying the fairness of them in terms of the equity of their performance across geographical space. Indeed, as recent evidence from the broader machine learning domain has shown, the systematic discrimination in making decisions against different groups has been shifted from people to autonomous algorithms [6]. In many applications, discrimination may be defined by different protected attributes, such as race, gender, ethnicity, and religion, that directly prevent favorable outcomes for a minority group in societal resource allocation, education equality, employment opportunity, etc [8]. Similarly, in the context of spatiotemporal data, mobility demand prediction algorithms have been shown to offer higher service quality to neighborhoods with a larger Caucasian population [4]. However, in such contexts, only a handful of recent studies exist that examine the fairness of location-based systems [13], and to the best of our knowledge, no effort has yet been made in measuring the fairness of generative mobility models and their resulting synthetic traces. In this paper, we seek to measure and compare these models based on fairness performance across multiple datasets. We do so by introducing metrics for evaluating both the utility of a generative model and the quality and fairness of their resulting traces, where accuracy is measured in terms of Common Part of Commuters (CPC). This metric is based on the Sørensen-Dice index and measures the similarity between real flows and generated flows (Equation 1) (Equation presented). Emergency Services Communication systems (ESCS) are evolving into Internet Protocol based communication networks, promising enhancements to their function, availability, and resilience. This increase in complexity and cyber-attack surface demands better understanding of these systems’ breakdown dynamics under extreme circumstances. Existing ESCS research largely overlooks simulation and the little work that exists focuses primarily on cybersecurity threats and neglects critical factors such as non-stationarity of call arrivals. This paper introduces a robust, adaptable graph-based simulation framework and essential mathematical models for ESCS simulation. The framework uses a representation of ESCSes where each vertex is a communicating finite-state machine that exchanges messages along edges and whose behavior is governed by a discrete event queuing model. Call arrival burstiness and its connection to emergency incidents is modeled through a cluster point process. Model applicability is demonstrated through simulations of the Seattle Police Department ESCS.
