Research has shown that most learning in the workplace takes place outside of formal training and, given the swiftly changing nature of the field, computer science graduates more than most workers, need to be able to learn computing topics outside of organized classes. In this paper we discuss students' perceptions of the difference between formal and informal learning of computing topics, based on three datasets: essays collected from a technical writing course at a single university;the results of a brainstorming exercise conducted in the same course;and semi-structured interviews conducted at six institutions in three countries. The students report strengths and weaknesses in informal learning. On the one hand, they are motivated, can choose their level of learning, can be more flexible about how they learn, and often retain the material better. On the other hand, they perceive that they may miss important aspects of a topic, learn in an ad hoc way, and have difficulty assessing their learning. © 2011 ACM.

Recent studies show that over the last decade electronic systems designed, created and continuously developed with the common goal to help the elderly live a more independent life. Each of the existing electronic systems offer services that cover different needs of ageing people living, such as self-determined life at home, social interaction, etc. In this paper we propose a set of service components that constitute a model for an e-service architecture capable to support the autonomy of older people. Furthermore, we argue that by exploiting existing operational electronic systems and integrate them according to the services they offer we can possibly converge to an ideal system that enhances assisted living of elderly people. © 2010 International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering.

There is a concern that mishap reporting systems track information about previous anomalies but do little to protect against future failures. In contrast, the term 'resilience engineering' has been coined to describe techniques that identify the thousands of everyday positive actions that prevent accidents from occurring. This change of perspective poses significant theoretical and pragmatic challenges. Just as it can be difficult to identify the causes of previous failures, it is equally difficult to determine what went right and why. We cannot always be sure how close our successes came to failure. Resilience engineering has not previously been applied in any sustained way to space missions. This paper, therefore, uses resilience engineering concepts to analyse the many different ways in which successive crews responded to engineering challenges on the International Space Station (ISS).

Next generation ubiquitous computing will comprise of context aware adaptive applications and protocols. There is a need of a generic architecture to cater for the adaptation requirements of increasingly demanding real-time applications and increasing dynamic wireless networks. This paper discusses the adaptive approach supported by CA3RM-Com architecture. CA3RM-Com is the context aware architecture proposed for real-time communication in wireless networks. It addresses the context representation, context acquisition, context exchange, and context management. Specific details of the architecture and referring adaptations that CA3RM-Com can support are discussed. Moreover the extended simulation results of adaptive multi-homed Mobile IP are presented in this paper. © 2008 IEEE.

Real time mobile communication is challenging due to the inherent limitations of mobile networks. On the other hand the stringent quality of service requirements of real time traffic is highly in demand. Our first contribution is the generic context aware architecture for adaptive real time applications. Adaptation is based on the awareness of context parameters from different layers of the existing protocol stack which involves context exchange among the neighboring layers as well as non-neighboring layers. The architecture comprises of context representation, context acquisition, cross-layer context exchange and context management. Our second contribution is the mobility aware, adaptive Multi-homed Mobile IP. Simulation of adaptive M-MIP was carried out as a proof of concept. Simulation demonstrated that adaptation to mobility was able to decrease Mobile IP handover latency. Further, the results show that the quality of service of real time traffic can be enhanced by using context aware adaptive MIP. The simulation involved with various speeds ranging from pedestrian scenarios to vehicular scenarios. Results are analyzed with variable data rates. The evaluations show that performance of the proposed solution is better compared to conventional MIP in terms of packet loss and throughput of real time traffic. © 2008 IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

The explosion of capabilities and new products within the sphere of Information Technology (IT) has fostered widespread, overly optimistic opinions regarding the industry, based on common but unjustified assumptions of quality and correctness of software. These assumptions are encouraged by software producers and vendors, who at this late date have not succeeded in finding a way to overcome the lack of an automated, mathematically sound way to develop correct systems from requirements. NASA faces this dilemma as it envisages advanced mission concepts that involve large swarms of small spacecraft that will engage cooperatively to achieve science goals. Such missions entail levels of complexity that beg for new methods for system development far beyond todaypsilas methods, which are inadequate for ensuring correct behavior of large numbers of interacting intelligent mission elements. New system development techniques recently devised through NASA-led research will offer some innovative approaches to achieving correctness in complex system development, including autonomous swarm missions that exhibit emergent behavior, as well as general software products created by the computing industry.

Mango: multiple alignment with N gapped oligos

Multiple sequence alignment is a classical and challenging task. The problem is NP-hard. The full dynamic programming takes too much time. The progressive alignment heuristics adopted by most state-of-the-art works suffer from the "once a gap, always a gap" phenomenon. Is there a radically new way to do multiple sequence alignment? In this paper, we introduce a novel and orthogonal multiple sequence alignment method, using both multiple optimized spaced seeds and new algorithms to handle these seeds efficiently. Our new algorithm processes information of all sequences as a whole and tries to build the alignment vertically, avoiding problems caused by the popular progressive approaches. Because the optimized spaced seeds have proved significantly more sensitive than the consecutive k-mers, the new approach promises to be more accurate and reliable. To validate our new approach, we have implemented MANGO: Multiple Alignment with N Gapped Oligos. Experiments were carried out on large 16S RNA benchmarks, showing that MANGO compares favorably, in both accuracy and speed, against state-of-the-art multiple sequence alignment methods, including ClustalW 1.83, MUSCLE 3.6, MAFFT 5.861, ProbConsRNA 1.11, Dialign 2.2.1, DIALIGN-T 0.2.1, T-Coffee 4.85, POA 2.0, and Kalign 2.0. We have further demonstrated the scalability of MANGO on very large datasets of repeat elements. MANGO can be downloaded at http://***/mango/ and is free for academic usage.

In all modern high-speed digital board designs, every slightest discontinuity on the board has to be considered carefully, especially the vias, which are abundantly used in digital design. As frequency increases and signal rise time reduces, via causes impedance discontinuities resulting in signal reflections and hence deterioration of signal integrity (SI) and system performance. The paper carries out a comprehensive study of the impacts of various via design parameters on SI using a full-wave electromagnetic simulator (CST microwave suite). The design parameters under study are via diameter, via height and the excess via stub in a multilayer PCB. The study allows high-speed digital designers to have a more in-depth assessment of via design and its effect on SI performance. © 2007 IEEE.
