In this paper, we propose a conceptual idea for measuring knowledge in online discussions. The measurement we propose is based on technical terms of any ontology that students use for describing concepts related to each other. We conducted a simulation experiment, an experiment examining online documents that discuss our example concepts. The experiment demonstrated that the relationships linking concepts affect the relationships of concepts’ technical terms, which we can use to evaluate knowledge and understanding of students. © 2013.

We present an algorithmic framework that allows on-line monitoring of past-time MTL specifications in a discrete time setting. The algorithms allow to be synthesized into efficient observer hardware blocks, which take advantage of the highly-parallel nature of hardware designs. For the time-bounded Since operator of past-time MTL we obtain a time complexity that is double logarithmic in the time it is executed at and the given time bounds of the Since operator. This result is promising with respect to a non-interfering monitoring approach that evaluates real-time specifications during the execution of the system-under-test. The resulting hardware blocks are reconfigurable and have applications in prototyping and runtime verification of embedded real-time systems. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Open Source software (OSS) proponents suggest that when developers lose interest in their project, their last duty is to "hand it off to a competent successor." However, the mechanisms of such a hand-off are not clear, or widely known among OSS developers. As a result, many OSS projects, after a certain long period of evolution, stop evolving, in fact becoming "inactive" or "abandoned" projects. This paper presents an analysis of the population of projects contained within one of the largest OSS repositories available (***), in order to describe how projects abandoned by their developers can be identified, and to discuss the attributes and characteristics of these inactive projects. In particular, the paper attempts to differentiate projects that experienced maintainability issues from those that are inactive for other reasons, in order to be able to correlate common characteristics to the "failure" of these projects. © IFIP International Federation for information Processing 2013.

Creating applications that focus on students to make them understand the value of society, and to be an active member of it, is important, as it is needed to educate them correctly in academic environment, near to the formal learning process applied till now. For this in this paper we present a platform named "Being Example: A different kind of leadership" that encourage students to participate and communicate with all the school students to interchange and discuss educative problems they have. "Being example" platform is the extension of the presented platform "Looking for Leaders", it encourages students to be leaders, by performing good actions and promote their peers to follow them, and not to just because of the skills they have. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

IEC 61131-3 is an open standard that provides guidelines for programmable logic controllers and control systems. The standard defines specifications for control system programming languages, both textual and graphical. A control system application developed using these languages can go through several changes over the course of the project's life-cycle. While differences in textual programs can be detected using traditional text difference algorithms, there exist no effective means for tracking changes at a granular, semantic level for graphical control system programs. In this paper, we present an approach for comparison of graphical IEC 61131-3 programs, specifically those written using the Function Block Diagram and Sequential Function Chart notations. To perform this comparison, we represent the programs in an XML format, and use this to compare individual elements. The differences are computed and the programs are then rendered in a customized graphical viewer that highlights changes between programs. We implement a prototype comparison utility for graphical IEC 61131-3 programs and show how it can help reduce the effort involved in manual review and maintenance activities. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper considers the community interactions in online social media (OSM) as an OSM ecosystem and addresses the problem of modeling a Web forum ecosystem into a social graph. We propose a text mining method to model cross-thread interactions and interests of users in a Web forum ecosystem to generate an enriched social graph. In addition to modeling reply-to relationships between users, the proposed method models message-similarity relationship to keep track of all similar posts resulting out of deviated discussions in different threads. Although, the proposed graph-generation method considers a reply-to relation as the primary means of linkage, it establishes links between clusters of similar posts instead of links between individual users, and the linkages between users can be derived from the existing linkages between clusters. The method starts with linking posts in each thread individually by identifying reply-to relationships, and applies an agglomerative clustering algorithm based on similarity of posts across the forum to group all posts into different clusters. Finally, relations between each pair of individual posts are mapped to create a link between clusters containing the posts. As a result, the generated social graph resembles a network of clusters that can also be presented at the granule of users who authored the posts to generate a social network of forum users, and at the same time it keeps information for all other users with similar interests. © Springer-Verlag 2013.

Nowadays, Web-based applications has became a common practice in environment monitoring. These applications provide open platforms for users to discover access and integrate near real-time sensor data which is collected from distributed sensors and sensor networks. To make use of the shared sensor data on the Web, conceptual models in a particular domain are normally adopted. However, most conceptual models require high quality data and high level domain knowledge. Such limitations greatly limit the application of these models. To overcome some of these limitations, this paper proposes a data-mining approach to analyze patterns and relationships among different sensor data sets. This approach provides a flexible way for users to understand hidden relationships in shared sensor data, and can help them to make use Web-based sensor systems better. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

We present a review of literature from the fields of gerontology, gerontechnology, HCI and government policy that deals with social and technical solutions for the ageing population. We highlight common assumptions about ageing people, which we argue are still embedded in much of the research related to the domain of ageing. This paper challenges six common assumptions across four broad themes that we identified in the literature. It aims to provide a reminder and resource for designers to eschew assumptions during designing technology for 'older' users.
