Reconstruction of gene regulatory networks or 'reverse-engineering' is a process of identifying gene interaction networks from experimental microarray gene expression profile through computation techniques. In this paper, we tried to reconstruct cancer-specific gene regulatory network using information theoretic approach - mutual information. The considered microarray data consists of large number of genes with 20 samples - 12 samples from colon cancer patient and 8 from normal cell. The data has been preprocessed and normalized. A t-test statistics has been applied to filter differentially expressed genes. The interaction between filtered genes has been computed using mutual information and ten different networks has been constructed with varying number of interactions ranging from 30 to 500. We performed the topological analysis of the reconstructed network, revealing a large number of interactions in colon cancer. Finally, validation of the inferred results has been done with available biological databases and literature.

Manufacturing scheduling is one of the important and complex combinatorial optimization problems in manufacturing system, where it can have a major impact on the productivity of a production process. Moreover, most of scheduling problems fall into the class of NP-hard combinatorial problems. In this paper, we concern with the design of multiobjective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) to solve a variety of manufacturing scheduling problems. In particularly, the fitness assignment mechanism and evolutionary representations as well as the hybrid evolutionary operations are introduced. Also, several applications of EAs to the different types of manufacturing scheduling problems are illustrated. Through a variety of numerical experiments, the effectiveness of these Hybrid EAs (HEAs) in the widely applications of manufacturing scheduling problems are demonstrated. This paper also summarizes a classification of scheduling problems and the design way of EAs for the different types of manufacturing scheduling problems in which we apply EAs to job-shop scheduling problem (JSP;operation sequencing), flexible JSP model (FJSP;operation sequencing with resources assignment), assembly line balancing models (ALB;shipments grouping and assignment), integrated process planning and scheduling (IPPS;operation sequencing with multiple resources assignment). It is useful to guide how to investigate an effective EA for the practical manufacturing scheduling problems.

The ability to nondestructively detect the presence of a single, traveling photon has been a long-standing goal in optics, with applications in quantum information and measurement. Realizing such a detector is complicated by the fact that photon-photon interactions are typically very weak. At microwave frequencies, very strong effective photon-photon interactions in a waveguide have recently been demonstrated. Here we show how this type of interaction can be used to realize a quantum nondemolition measurement of a single propagating microwave photon. The scheme we propose uses a chain of solid-state three-level systems (transmons) cascaded through circulators which suppress photon backscattering. Our theoretical analysis shows that microwave-photon detection with fidelity around 90% can be realized with existing technologies.

A plan of study enumerates the courses recommended by an academic program along with a time frame to complete the requirements of a degree or credential. A general plan of study can be recommended by an academic department or college to all of its students or, as an alternative, personalized plans of study can be created for each student by his/her academic advisor. This paper presents a case study of assessing the recommended as well as personalized plans of study in terms of their affect on students' performance using data mining techniques. The study was conducted at the informationsystems Department, Faculty of computing and informationtechnology, King Abdulaziz University. We computed the degree to which each student followed the recommended plan of study and correlated this to the students GPA to assess the impact of the plan of study to the academic performance. Our results showed a statistically significant, moderate positive correlation indicating that following the recommended plan of study has a positive impact on the academic performance. To assess the personalized plans of study proposed by the academic advisor, we built and compared three models to predict the GPA resulting from these plans. Given a proposed plan of study, our model was able to predict the correct GPA with a 0.44 root mean squared error.
