Electricity companies have traditionally seen customers only as consumers but with the introduction of new metering technology the situation is about to change. As customer participation increases with the development of the Smart Grid environment, new concerns about privacy arise. In this article we introduce an architecture offering a clear, information-centered bird's-eye overview to the Smart Grid environment for privacy analysis purposes. To do this, we first seek out commonalities in the environment by dividing the topic into smaller elements in order to gain deeper understanding and to form abstract and functional models. From these we form a reference architecture representing a real-world situation. Our approach permits identification of the use of private information in the environment without implementation-dependent issues. We also present the privacy issues related to the architecture. The implementation strategies can vary, and we conclude with a discussion of the effects of the varying approaches.

Simultaneous place classification and object detection (SPCOD) is an algorithm which is able to categorize the environment (place) and detect the objects presented in the environment. Although both place classification and object detection problems have been in discussion in literature, as a concept SPCOD is still in its early stage of research. Focusing mainly on the discrimination ability of SPCOD, in this paper we have proposed a pairwise conditional random field (CRF) framework to integrate mature techniques on laser data based place classification and vision based off-the-shelf object descriptor. Extensive experimental results on a public data set demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper deals with the finite-horizon estimation of randomly occurring faults for a class of linear discrete time-varying systems. All the system parameters are time-varying and the failures are assumed to occur in a random way, and two sets of Bernoulli distributed white sequences are introduced to govern the failures probability. By using the completing squares method and stochastic analysis techniques, necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of the finite-horizon H_∞ fault estimator are derived, and then the time-varying fault estimator parameters are obtained by solving coupled backward recursive Riccati difference equations (RDEs). A simulation example is utilized to illustrate the usefulness of the proposed fault estimation method.

information and Communication Technologies have changed the way people live and work. In the education field, the ICT evolution is increasingly supporting innovative methods of learning and many universities are investing in creating their own e-Learning Environments. Besides, learners' performance still and issue, the social learning theory states that people can learn by observing the behavior of others and the outcome of those behaviors. Furthermore, the theory also mentions that other people will most likely exhibit the behavior if the outcome is positive. This research proposes a game theory based model to enhance learners' performance (in terms of rate of interaction, participation/contribution and attendance). Researchers presented a novel model (CEM) composed of three loosely-coupled components for enhancing the cooperation and communication levels between learners in e-Learning Environments (eLE). Each learner represents a player in a "game" within the eLE. The model used for setting the list of positive and negative activities, storing players' actions and evaluating players' behavior throughout the game. The performance of CEM has been evaluated based on the mean values and the ratio of positive actions taken by all groups in a particular class session.

Grid Manufacturing (GM) is a new production paradigm, based upon the use of standardized and modular Reconfigurable Manufacturing systems (RMS). In GM all systems have virtual software counterparts that act autonomously. This includes both modular manufacturing equipment, as the products themselves. The control system required for this approach is based upon a distributed and hybrid architecture using agent technology. In this paper we look at the Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) part of this system. The paper discusses the proposed control architecture, introduces ways to standardize state representation and shows a solution to the challenge of representing and controlling the states of distributed systems, with a focus on safety.

Professional search in specific domains (e.g. patent, medical, scientific literature, media) usually needs an exploratory type of search which is characterized more often, in comparison to fact finding and question answering web search, by recall-oriented information needs and by uncertainty and evolution or change of the information need. Additionally, the complexity of the tasks that need to be performed by professional searchers, which usually include not only retrieval but also information analysis and monitoring tasks, require association, pipelining and possibly integration of information as well as synchronization and coordination of multiple and potentially concurrent search views produced from different datasets, search tools and UIs. Many facets of IR technology (e.g. exploratory search, aggregated search, federated search, task-based search, IR over query sessions, cognitive IR approaches, Human Computer and information Retrieval) aim to at least partially address these demands. This workshop aims to stimulate exploratory research, bring together various facets of IR research and promote discussion between researchers towards the development of a generalised framework facilitating the integration of IR technologies and search tools into next generation professional search systems. This envisioned framework should be supported from new or the extension of existing protocols and may influence the design of next generation professional search systems. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

The paper outlines a model for theorizing about development practices, especially taking into account the intended rationale for, actual realization of, and resulting impacts from using particular practices in varying contexts. This includes discussing of two different modes of thinking through which we can approach software development practices: technical rationality vs. reflection-in-action. By framing development practices taking place in software organizations as “organizational practices”, the paper also sketches previous practice research in organizations, which has profoundly informed this work. Finally, the paper compares the SEMAT approach to the outlined model, and suggests a few points of critique and complementary elements to the SEMAT initiative, especially in its capabilities towards theorizing.

A Cloud system, which is also often called a data center, may host a large number of application servers (termed as applications for short in this paper) that consume various types of resource, such as CPU, memory, and I/O. In such a scenario, the application placement strategy, which specifies how to host applications across the physical servers in the Cloud, is critical to achieve good system- and/or client-oriented performance. The existing application placement algorithms in literature assume that the consumption of system resources is proportional to the level of workloads submitted to the system. In this paper, we reveal that it may not be the case in some circumstances. Based on this observation, we design and implement an application placement framework, called EAPAC, for Clouds. The developed framework is able to achieve the optimized performance by judiciously allocating to the applications a proper mixture of different types of application request as well as an appropriate number of requests in each type. Further, we investigate the issue of resource conflicts among different applications when there exist concurrent requests in the system. We have conducted extensive experiments to evaluate the performance of the developed framework. The experiment results show that compared with the existing method in literature, EAPAC can improve the performance by 35% in terms of the reply rate. © 2013 Elsevier Inc.

The McCracken et al. working group paper is often cited for the proposition that students can't program. In that study, students from four different institutions were each assigned to implement one of three versions of a calculator. More than half of the students failed to produce a program that compiled and executed in the time assigned. Lost in this discussion, however, is the fact that the original paper had the goal of evaluating its instrument, as well as the students. We examine and adjust their instrument, and present the results of the revised study. With a modified instrument, we have obtained significantly improved results. Copyright © 2013 ACM.

Many companies have already adopted their business processes to be in accordance with defined and organized standards. Two standards that are sought after by companies are IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) and ISO 27001. Often companies start certifying their business processes with ITIL and continue with ISO 27001. For small and medium-sized businesses, it is difficult to prepare and maintain the ISO 27001 certification. The IT departments of these companies often do not have the time to fully observere standards as part of their daily routine. ITIL and ISO 27001 perfectly fit into companies and help reduce errors through the standardization and comparability of products and services between themselves and other companies and partners. ISO 27001 specifically looks at security risks, countermeasures and remedial actions. We start with the processes that need to be in place for implementing ITIL in an organisation's business processes. We use a cloud service provider as a running example and compare ITIL processes with ISO 27001 processes. We identify which aspects of these two standards can be better executed. We propose a mapping between ITIL and ISO 27001 that makes them easier to understand and assists with the certification process. We show further how to prepare for audits as well as re-certification. Often, these two processes are seen separately and not in conjunction, where synergies can be exploited. Legal requirements, compliance and data security play an integral part in this process. In essence, we present checklists and guidelines for companies who want to prepare for standardization or that are already certified, but want to improve their business processes. We illustrate our method using an high availability video conferencing cloud example. © 2013 IFIP International Federation for information Processing.
