Adaptive communication for rate enhancement and link survival is a recent area of interest. In adaptive communication, transmission parameters like transmit power, code rate and modulation scheme are chosen in an adaptive manner to match the link conditions and quality of service demand at that transmission interval. But this is a highly non linear phenomenon and a constrained optimization problem. In this paper, we have investigated Simulated Annealing algorithm in conjunction with a fuzzy rule base system (SAFRBS) for adaptive coding, modulation and power in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing environment. The cases of fixed and adaptive communication are compared and results are shown through the simulations.

Current StarCraft bots are not very flexible in their strategy choice, most of them just follow a manually optimized one, usually a rush. We suggest a method of augmenting existing bots via Fuzzy Control in order to make them react on the current game situation. According to the available information, the best matching of a pool of strategies is chosen. While the method is very general and can be applied easily to many bots, we implement it for the existing BTHAI bot and show experimentally how the modifications affects its gameplay, and how it is improved compared to the original version.

The automatic music genre classification task is an active area of research in the field of Music information Retrieval. In this paper we use two different symbolic feature sets for genre classification and combine them using an early fusion approach. Our results show that early fusion achieves better classification accuracy than using any of the individual feature sets. Furthermore, when compared with some of the state of the art approaches using the same experimental conditions, early fusion of symbolic features is ranked the second best method.

To accommodate a wide variety of application services, the network virtualization environment (NVE) has received much attention. In an NVE, infrastructure providers (InPs) provide service providers (SPs) with virtual networks (VNs) using the InPs' substrate resources for the SPs' application services. Service providers have flexible requirements of topology, quality of service (QoS), and their dynamic changes on VNs. To meet all these requirements, traditional approaches based on performance guarantee relying only on InPs are inefficient and sometimes infeasible because they result in significant operational cost. We propose an architecture in which SPs can select appropriate resources from available resources and dynamically use the allocated resources depending on their application characteristics and user situations to meet their demands. In the proposed architecture, SPs can improve VN performance through resource control, and InPs are not required to have any performance guaranteed networks. Therefore, the proposed architecture can balance QoS and resource efficiency. We also present the basic design of the proposed architecture and show use cases and a prototype implementation using OpenFlow technologies.

The increasing use of wireless Internet and smartphone has accelerated the need for widespread computing. Smartphones stimulate growth of Global Position systems (GPS) and mobile cloud computing. Mobile cloud computing is the cloud infrastructure where the computation and storage are moved away from mobile devices. However, smartphone mobile computing poses challenges because of the limited battery capacity, constraints of wireless networks and the limitations of device. Therefore, it is necessary to offload the computation-intensive part by careful partitioning of application functions across a cloud. Mobile applications can be executed in the mobile device or offloaded to the cloud clone for execution, in this paper; we propose a new elastic application model that enables transparent use of cloud resources to augment the capability of resource constrained mobile devices. The significant features of this model include the partition of a single application into multiple components. Its execution location is transparent it can be run on a mobile device or migrated to the cloud. Thus, an elastic application can augment the capabilities of a mobile device including computation power, storage, and network bandwidth, with the light of dynamic execution configuration according to device's status including CPU load, memory, battery level. We demonstrate promising results of the proposed application model using data collected from one of our example elastic applications.

The software process improvement is initiated to achieve the quality of the software processes which lead to quality of final software products. software processes are improved by implementing software process standards. These standards are often called software process improvement frameworks or standards. software process improvement is necessary to increase the efficiency and productivity of software companies and enhance the final software products. However, most of the Sudanese software companies do not follow any software process improvement standards. For this reason, normally these companies produce the software without high quality. Furthermore, the low quality may be the cause of some problems such as unreliable software and high maintenance. Some of the Sudanese software organizations were visited, to interview software experts and observe how these organizations can improve their software process. Furthermore, the results of these interviews have been used to design a questionnaire in order to show the relationship between Sudanese software organizations and software process improvement standards. This study has identified the problems faced by these organizations during the implementation of software process improvement standards and shows the ability of these organizations to implement the software process improvement standards. Moreover, this work can be used as a first step towards to produce software process improvement standard for the Sudanese software industry.

Modeling throughput of emergency departments via time series: An expectation maximization algorithm

In this article, the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm is applied for modeling the throughput of emergency departments via available time-series data. The dynamics of emergency department throughput is developed and evaluated, for the first time, as a stochastic dynamic model that consists of the noisy measurement and first-order autoregressive (AR) stochastic dynamic process. By using the EM algorithm, the model parameters, the actual throughput, as well as the noise intensity, can be identified simultaneously. Four real-world time series collected from an emergency department in West London are employed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the introduced algorithm. Several quantitative indices are proposed to evaluate the inferred models. The simulation shows that the identified model fits the data very well. © 2013 ACM.

Twitter is a breed of social networks that are playing a buoyant role in today's world communication. This paper is an attempt to apply knowledge discovery process on Twitter dataset comprising hashtags along with the visual analytic techniques whose purpose is to provide information to the people in such a way so that they understand concealed knowledge in the data effortlessly and meritoriously. We further analyze tweet text and metadata associated with each tweet for identification of useful patterns like "who talks to whom" and "how much". Our research reveals the impact of visualization and hierarchical clustering technique in analyzing similar groups of users. Further we investigate different social network measures that unveil the influence of users in the particular hashtags.

This article deals with social infrastructure planning problems in urban city. Each facility must serve minimum pre-specified level of demand. The objective is to minimize the distance traveled by users to reach the facilities this means also to maximize the accessibility to facilities. A location model that captures the above features is formulated and different solution methods are tested. Clustering in spatial data mining is to group similar objects based on their connectivity, distance, or their relative density in space. In real word, there exist many physical obstacles such as rivers, lakes, highways and mountains, and their presence may affect the result of clustering significantly. In this paper, we study the problem of clustering in the presence of obstacles to solve location of public service facility problem. In this paper, CSPOD-DBSCAN algorithm (Clustering with short path Obstructed Distance - Density- Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise) is developed in the spirit of DBSCAN clustering algorithms. This algorithm is Density-based clustering algorithm using Dijkstra algorithm to calculate obstructed short path distance. The application of this algorithm is illustrated through a case study involving the location of schools in the districts of Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

The proliferation of cloud computing allows scientists to deploy computation and data intensive applications without infrastructure investment, where large generated datasets can be flexibly stored with multiple cloud service providers. Due to the pay-as-you-go model, the total application cost largely depends on the usage of computation, storage and bandwidth resources, and cutting the cost of cloud-based data storage becomes a big concern for deploying scientific applications in the cloud. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm that can automatically decide whether a generated dataset should be 1) stored in the current cloud, 2) deleted and re-generated whenever reused or 3) transferred to cheaper cloud service for storage. The algorithm finds the trade-off among computation, storage and bandwidth costs in the cloud, which are three key factors for the cost of storing generated application datasets with multiple cloud service providers. Simulations conducted with popular cloud service providers' pricing models show that the proposed algorithm is highly cost-effective to be utilised in the cloud.
