Does the use of statistical methodology such as design of experiments stifle innovation? This is an important theme in this paper. Design of experiments is viewed as part of a process for enabling both breakthrough innovation and incremental innovation, without which western society will fail to be competitive. Quality engineering technology in general is part of a broader approach to innovation and business improvement called statistical engineering. The most powerful statistical technique in statistical engineering is design of experiments. Several important developments in this field are reviewed, the role of designed experiments in innovation examined, and new developments and applications of the methods discussed.

We use Regge phenomenology to study the structure of the poles of the N∗ and Δ∗ spectrum. We employ the available pole extractions from partial wave analysis of meson scattering and photoproduction data. We assess the importance of the imaginary part of the poles (widths) to obtain a consistent determination of the parameters of the Regge trajectory. We compare the several pole extractions and show how Regge phenomenology can be used to gain insight in the internal structure of baryons. We find that the majority of the states in the parent Regge trajectories are compatible with a mostly compact three-quark state picture. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

High blood pressure is a highly heritable and modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease. We report the largest genetic association study of blood pressure traits (systolic, diastolic and pulse pressure) to date in over 1 million people of European ancestry. We identify 535 novel blood pressure loci that not only offer new biological insights into blood pressure regulation but also highlight shared genetic architecture between blood pressure and lifestyle exposures. Our findings identify new biological pathways for blood pressure regulation with potential for improved cardiovascular disease prevention in the future.

Automatic segmentation of left ventricle (LV) myocardium in cardiac short-axis cine MR images acquired on subjects with myocardial infarction is a challenging task, mainly because of the various types of image inhomogeneity caused by the infarctions. Among the approaches proposed to automate the LV myocardium segmentation task, methods based upon deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) have demonstrated their exceptional accuracy and robustness in recent years. However, most of the CNN-based approaches treat the frames in a cardiac cycle independently, which fails to capture the valuable dynamics of heart motion. Herein, an approach based on recurrent neural network (RNN), specifically a multi-level convolutional long short-term memory (ConvLSTM) model, is proposed to take the motion of the heart into consideration. Based on a ResNet-56 CNN, LV-related image features in consecutive frames of a cardiac cycle are extracted at both the low- and high-resolution levels, which are processed by the corresponding multi-level ConvLSTM models to generate the myocardium segmentations. A leave-one-out experiment was carried out on a set of 3,600 cardiac cine MR slices collected in-house for 8 porcine subjects with surgically induced myocardial infarction. Compared with a solely CNN-based approach, the proposed approach demonstrated its superior robustness against image inhomogeneity by incorporating information from adjacent frames. It is a generally accepted fact that the Airport is the focal point of the country which creates a lasting impression of its people. The challenge faced by airports today is the complexity of players and processes, and the inability of multiple systems to share and analyze data. In order to face this challenge, many airports have implemented isolated solutions. While these solutions may improve specific processes or functions they are not holistic enough. The airport ecosystem must become more `intelligent' to optimize its supply chain, share real-time information, predict certain outcomes and track, manage and locate all of its assets. So the need of the hour is to create a unified, integrated, resourceful and ready to use platform to make intelligent decisions and assist airports to reach its next level. The aim of this paper is to review selected data mining techniques that can be integrated in to such system. Entities such as airlines, airport retails sector and the airport itself is considered for this cause and the data mining techniques that can be applied to these entities to improve the current airport systems such as flight delay prediction, passenger profiling, segmentation, association rule mining are discussed to find better approaches for an intelligent airport system.

Information theoretic quantities are extremely useful in discovering relationships between two or more data sets. One popular method-particularly for continuous systems-for estimating these quantities is the nearest neighbour estimators. When system sizes are very large or the systems have periodic boundary conditions issues with performance and correctness surface, however solutions are known for each problem. Here we show that these solutions are inappropriate in systems that simultaneously contain both features and discuss a lesser known alternative solution involving Vantage Point trees that is capable of addressing both issues. Fix a morphism a ∈ Sji, and define an operation a on Sijby x a y = xay for all x, y ∈ Sij. Then (Sij, a) is a semigroup, known as a sandwich semigroup, and denoted by Saij. This article develops a general theory of sandwich semigroups in locally small categories. We begin with structural issues such as regularity, Green's relations and stability, focusing on the relationships between these properties on Saijand the whole category S. We then identify a natural condition on a, called sandwich regularity, under which the set Reg(Saij) of all regular elements of Saijis a subsemigroup of Saij. Under this condition, we carefully analyse the structure of the semigroup Reg(Saij), relating it via pullback products to certain regular subsemigroups of Siiand Sjj, and to a certain regular sandwich monoid defined on a subset of Sji;among other things, this allows us to also describe the idempotentgenerated subsemigroup E(Saij) of S aij. We also study combinatorial invariants such as the rank (minimal size of a generating set) of the semigroups S aij, Reg(Saij) and E(Saij);we give lower bounds for these ranks, and in the case of Reg(Saij) and E(Saij) show that the bounds are sharp under a certain condition we call MI-domination. The seminal work of Gatys et al. demonstrated the power of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) in creating artistic imagery by separating and recombining image content and style. This process of using CNNs to render a content image in different styles is referred to as Neural Style Transfer (NST). Since then, NST has become a trending topic both in academic literature and industrial applications. It is receiving increasing attention and a variety of approaches are proposed to either improve or extend the original NST algorithm. In this paper, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the current progress towards NST. We first propose a taxonomy of current algorithms in the field of NST. Then, we present several evaluation methods and compare different NST algorithms both qualitatively and quantitatively. The review concludes with a discussion of various applications of NST and open problems for future research. Fix sets X and Y , and write PTXYfor the set of all partial functions X → Y . Fix a partial function a : Y → X, and define the operation aon PTXYby f ag = f ag for f, g ∈ PTXY. The sandwich semigroup (PTXY , a) is denoted PTaXY. We apply general results from Part I to thoroughly describe the structural and combinatorial properties of PTaXY, as well as its regular and idempotent-generated subsemigroups, Reg(PTaXY) and E(PTaXY). After describing regularity, stability and Green's relations and preorders, we exhibit Reg(PTaXY) as a pullback product of certain regular subsemigroups of the (non-sandwich) partial transformation semigroups PTXand PTY, and as a kind of "inflation" of PTA, where A is the image of the sandwich element a. We also calculate the rank (minimal size of a generating set) and, where appropriate, the idempotent rank (minimal size of an idempotent generating set) of PTaXY, Reg(PTaXY) and E(PTaXY). The same program is also carried for sandwich semigroups of totally defined functions and for injective partial functions. Several corollaries are obtained for various (non-sandwich) semigroups of (partial) transformations with restricted image, domain and/or kernel. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.
