The development of an environmental decision support system (EDSS) by means of two different aims to support the operators' decisions in the drinking water treatment plant (DWTP), equipped with the biggest electrodialysis reversal (EDR) in the world. A fuzzy artificial neural network (ANN) modelling and adaptive network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) have been compared for optimizing the decision: how to manage water blending ratios from EDR and conventional treatment of the drinking water plant, evaluating Llobregat River characteristics (inlet DWTP), current operating conditions of DWTP, weather conditions and distribution requirements on-line. This tool has been tested among 4,5 months in the facility, showing better tendencies regarding the ANFIS model in comparison to the ANN model. A further application of the ANN and ANFIS process models, tested and validated, will be integrated into a process-controlled architecture of the EDSS. © 2016 Environmental Modelling and Software for Supporting a Sustainable Future, Proceedings - 8th International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software, iEMSs 2016. Sum of squares (SOS) optimization has been a powerful and influential addition to the theory of optimization in the past decade. Its reliance on relatively large-scale semidefinite programming, however, has seriously challenged its ability to scale in many practical applications. In this paper, we introduce DSOS and SDSOS optimization as more tractable alternatives to sum of squares optimization that rely instead on linear programming and second order cone programming. These are optimization problems over certain subsets of sum of squares polynomials and positive semidefinite matrices and can be of potential interest in general applications of semidefinite programming where scalability is a limitation.

Multithreaded Object-Oriented programming in concurrency environment using object-oriented technology is a complex activity. Programmers need to be aware of issues unrelated to their domain of problem, and are often unprepared for the challenges of the concurrent object-oriented programming brings. The interaction of their components becomes more complex, and makes it difficult to validate the design and correctness of the implemented program. Supporting separation of concerns in the design and implementation of the multithreaded object-oriented programming can provide a number of benefits such as comprehension, reusability, extensibility and adaptability in both design and implementation. We have tackled this problem by adopting the technique of separation of concerns in multithreaded object-oriented programming. In this paper we demonstrate an Aspect-Oriented approach that can be used for multithreaded object-oriented programming. We also show how better the separation of concerns in components. Readers/Writers problem is demonstrated using an aspect-oriented approach. Our methodology, which is based on aspect-oriented techniques as well as language and architecture independence, is an aspect-oriented framework.

In this paper, a new multipurpose Lightweight Grid (LWG) system is introduced, under the acronym Computational Basic Reprogrammable Adaptive (CoBRA) grid. It provides the functionality grid users require, and offers grid developers the opportunity to test and alter grid components while the grid is in use. The grid was proven to operate properly by testing several applications and introducing new components. Its performance was tested by the 'sleep testing technique', and by implementing a quantum physics calculation. The user friendliness was also evaluated with the latter distributed computational problem. The possibility to port the system onto well-established systems like CONDOR and Globus is also discussed. The benefits associated with separation of concerns are well established. Aspect-Orientation is a methodology that aims at separating components and aspects from the early stages of the software life cycle, and using techniques to combining them together at the implementation phase. Componentbased programming systems have shown themselves to be a natural way of constructing extensible software. Well-defined interfaces, encapsulation, late binding and polymorphism promote extensibility, yet despite this synergy, components have not been widely employed at the systems level. This is primarily due to the failure of existing component technologies to provide the protection and performance required of systems software. In this paper we identify the requirements for a component system to support extensions, and describe an extensibility and adaptability in the design of system software. We discuss an aspect-oriented framework that can simplify system design by expressing it at a higher level of abstraction. Our work concentrates on how to achieve a higher separation of aspects, components, and layers from each other. Our goal is to achieve a better design model for system software in terms of extensibility, reuse and adaptability.

Criteria for software quality measurement depend on the application area. In large software systems criteria like maintainability, comprehensibility and extensibility play an important role. My aim is to identify design flaws in software systems automatically and thus to avoid "bad" - incomprehensible, hardly expandable and changeable - program structures. Depending on the perception and experience of the searching engineer, design flaws are interpreted in a different way. I propose to combine known methods for finding design flaws on the basis of metrics with machine learning mechanisms, such that design flaw detection is adaptable to different views. This paper presents the underlying method, describes an analysis tool for Java programs and shows results of an initial case study. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ubiquitous computing and universal network connectivity have given rise to expectations of building a Digital Society, where many aspects of business and social activities may be accomplished by remote participants. Intelligent, context-aware, and workflow-centric collaboration is an essential prerequisite to fulfill that expectation. EkSarva is a framework, which enables realization of such collaborations in diverse domains. This is accomplished by identifying the key concepts and their inter-relationships (dubbed the PPP/SST paradigm), which form the foundation of this framework. The key concepts include: (a) Project, (b) Person, (c) Place, (d) Signal, (e) Situation, and (f) Transcript. This paper describes how these concepts collectively can give rise to an intelligent collaboration environment.

As concurrent software systems become larger, the interaction of their components is becoming more complex. This interaction may limit reuse, making it difficult to validate design and correctness and perhaps forcing reengineering of these systems in order to meet future requirements. In order to reduce this complexity and to build stable and adaptable concurrent software systems, we present an approach that emphasizes the separation of interaction components from the functional components.
