In recent years, the number of patients using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) has increased. In addition to helping patients manage their disease, CGM produces time series data that can be used for integration in control algorithms, predictive models, and for retrospective analyses. Through feature extraction, many digital biomarkers can be derived from CGM. In this work, we provide a tool to extract features derived from the frequency domain. We first introduce a novel open-source Python library, CGM-Freq, for the analysis of CGM data in the frequency domain. We then test the library on real data. This work provides an open-source tool to further investigate the frequency domain of CGM signals.

Opponent Colors Theory advances that four colors have special status and are yoked in opponent fashion (yellow-versus-blue, and red-versus-green). Classic hue cancelation studies provide evidence for this theory: peop...

While maternal obesity (MO) is associated with neurobehavioral impairment (NBI) in offspring, the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. The placenta is thought to play a role in fetal programming. To elucidate the association between MO and offspring NBI, we performed single-nucleus RNA-seq on maternal- and fetal-facing sides of human term placentas from MO and lean groups. MO placentas showed the upregulation of hypoxia response genes in multiple cell types, and maternal-facing hypoxia gene expression correlated with offspring NBI in an independent birth cohort, Gen3G. Extravillous trophoblasts (EVTs) showed the highest expression of NBI-correlated genes, and EVT NBI-gene expression correlated with hypoxia signatures in two cohorts. Exposing cultured EVTs to hypoxia increased NBI gene expression, and 44% of the association between maternal BMI and NBI-gene expression in EVTs was mediated by hypoxia. Our findings suggest that hypoxia in EVTs is a key process in the neurodevelopmental programming of fetal exposure to MO.

This paper considers the problem of obtaining an accurate spectral representation of speech formant structure when the voicing source exhibits a high fundamental frequency. Our work is inspired by auditory perception and physiological modeling studies implicating the use of temporal changes in speech by humans. Specifically, we develop and assess signal processing schemes aimed at exploiting temporal change of pitch as a basis for formant estimation. Our methods are cast in a generalized framework of two-dimensional processing of speech and show quantitative improvements under certain conditions over representations derived from traditional and homomorphic linear prediction. We conclude by highlighting potential benefits of our framework in the particular application of speaker recognition with preliminary results indicating a performance gender-gap closure on subsets of the TImit corpus.
A common complaint among listeners with hearing loss (HL) is that they have difficulty communicating in common social settings. This article reviews how normal-hearing listeners cope in such settings, especially how t...
