Forecasting has always been at the forefront of decision making and planning. The uncertainty that surrounds the future is both exciting and challenging, with individuals and organisations seeking to minimise risks and maximise utilities. The large number of forecasting applications calls for a diverse set of forecasting methods to tackle real-life challenges. This article provides a non-systematic review of the theory and the practice of forecasting. We provide an overview of a wide range of theoretical, state-of-the-art models, methods, principles, and approaches to prepare, produce, organise, and evaluate forecasts. We then demonstrate how such theoretical concepts are applied in a variety of real-life contexts. We do not claim that this review is an exhaustive list of methods and applications. However, we wish that our encyclopedic presentation will offer a point of reference for the rich work that has been undertaken over the last decades, with some key insights for the future of forecasting theory and practice. Given its encyclopedic nature, the intended mode of reading is non-linear. We offer cross-references to allow the readers to navigate through the various topics. We complement the theoretical concepts and applications covered by large lists of free or open-source software implementations and publicly-available databases. © 2020, CC BY.

Atherosclerosis is a disease responsible for millions of deaths each year, primarily due to heart attack and stroke. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is a non-invasive method that can be used to analyze the carotid artery and detect signs of atherosclerosis. Most MR methods acquire high contrast, static images. These methods, however, are sensitive to artifacts from cardiac motion, produce time-averaged images, and do not allow for carotid distensibility analysis. Carotid distensibility is an important, systematic measure of vascular health. Cine fast spin echo (FSE) is a new MR imaging that can obtain dynamic MR data (i.e., cardiac phase-resolved datasets). Dynamic imaging, however, comes at the cost of lower spatial resolution and signal-to-noise ratio, making these data potentially more difficult to segment. This paper introduces a semi-automated segmentation method that segments the common carotid artery (CCA) lumen across the cardiac cycle from dynamic MR images. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first proposed technique for segmenting cardiac cycle-resolved cine FSE images. It combines a priori knowledge about the size and shape of the CCA, with the max-tree data structure, the tie-zone watershed transform (using identified internal and external markers) and supervised classification, to segment the carotid artery wall-lumen boundary. The user has to select only a seed point (centred in the carotid artery lumen). Technique performance was assessed using forty-five cine FSE data sets, each consisting of images reconstructed at sixteen temporal bins across the cardiac cycle. The automatic segmentation results were compared against the consensus of three different manual segmentation results. Our technique achieved an average Dice coefficient, sensitivity and false positive rate of 0.928±0.031 (mean ± standard deviation), 0.915 ± 0.037 and 0.056 ± 0.049, respectively. Statistical Parametric Speech Synthesis Using Generative Adversarial Networks under A Multi-Task Learning Framework

In this paper, we aim at improving the performance of synthesized speech in statistical parametric speech synthesis (SPSS) based on a generative adversarial network (GAN). In particular, we propose a novel architecture combining the traditional acoustic loss function and the GAN's discriminative loss under a multi-task learning (MTL) framework. The mean squared error (MSE) is usually used to estimate the parameters of deep neural networks, which only considers the numerical difference between the raw audio and the synthesized one. To mitigate this problem, we introduce the GAN as a second task to determine if the input is a natural speech with specific conditions. In this MTL framework, the MSE optimization improves the stability of GAN, and at the same time GAN produces samples with a distribution closer to natural speech. Listening tests show that the multi-task architecture can generate more natural speech that satisfies human perception than the conventional methods. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. Exercise-based rehabilitation plays a key role for patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) in improving their well-being and reducing their symptoms. Monitoring and assessing the exercise response at an individual level is critical toward achieving better health outcomes. 15 exercise sessions performed by 5 CVD patients and 9 sessions from 3 regularly active individuals were monitored, and heart rate (HR) data were acquired. A model based on the HR dynamics during exercising at different intensities was built, and simulations were performed to assess performance in different scenarios of exercise selection. Our results show that the application of simple rules in exercise selection, which consider both the HR and the beneficial HR zones of individuals, can lead to beneficial execution of exercise programs (%time spent in beneficial HR zones: 60.6±27.5 for CVD patients). Personalized guidance during exercise has the potential to significantly contribute in the beneficial execution of exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation programs. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2018.

An intra-body communication(IBC) research platform based on virtual instrument was established for the hardware design of IBC transceiver. Firstly, the feasibility of constructing IBC research platform using optic-coupling circuit was verified via comparison of three kinds of measurement methods based on virtual instrument. Then, ASK, FSK and BPSK modulation-demodulation were realized via lab VIEW programming, and user interface of the platform was also designed. The platform could achieve signal transmission or recover under different coupling type, different channel distance and different modulation-demodulation method, etc., by means of dynamic adjusting of platform parameters. Experiment results of capacitive-coupling under the platform indicated the authenticity and feasibility of signal transmission. Finally, a full-floating IBC transceiver was designed aided by the parameters provided by the research platform under the scene of capacitive-coupling, FSK modulation and 180 cm channel distance. Moreover, Bit Error Rate(BER) of the transceiver was less than 1 e-5, which meant that it is effective and convenient for the design of IBC transceiver aided by virtual instrument platform.

Lack of trust has become one of the main concerns of users who tend to utilize one or multiple Cloud providers. Trustworthy Cloud-based computing and data storage require secure and efficient solutions which allow clients to remotely store and process their data in the Cloud. User-side encryption is an established method to secure the user data on the Cloud. However, using encryption, we lose processing capabilities, such as searching, over the Cloud data. In this paper, we present RESeED, a tool that provides user-transparent and Cloud-agnostic regular-expression search functionality over encrypted data across multiple Clouds. Upon a client's intent to upload a new document to the Cloud, RESeED analyzes the document's content and updates its data structures accordingly. Then, it encrypts and transfers the document to the Cloud. RESeED provides the regular-expression search functionality over encrypted data by translating the search queries on-the-fly to finite automata and analyzing concise and secure representations of the data before asking the Cloud to download the encrypted documents. RESeED's parallel architecture enables efficient search over large-scale (and potentially big data scale) data-sets. We evaluate the performance of RESeED experimentally and demonstrate its scalability and correctness using real-world data-sets from *** and Internet engineering Task Force (IETF). Our results show that RESeED produces accurate query responses with a reasonable (6%) storage overhead. The results also demonstrate that for many search queries, RESeED performs faster in compare with the grep utility that functions on unencrypted data. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Dense 3D shape correspondence is an important problem in computer vision and computer graphics. Recently, the local shape descriptor based 3D shape correspondence approaches have been widely studied, where the local shape descriptor is a real-valued vector to characterize the geometrical structure of the shape. Different from these realvalued local shape descriptors, in this paper, we propose to learn a novel binary spectral shape descriptor with the deep neural network for 3D shape correspondence. The binary spectral shape descriptor can require less storage space and enable fast matching. First, based on the eigenvectors of the Laplace-Beltrami operator, we construct a neural network to form a nonlinear spectral representation to characterize the shape. Then, for the defined positive and negative points on the shapes, we train the constructed neural network by minimizing the errors between the outputs and their corresponding binary descriptors, minimizing the variations of the outputs of the positive points and maximizing the variations of the outputs of the negative points, simultaneously. Finally, we binarize the output of the neural network to form the binary spectral shape descriptor for shape correspondence. The proposed binary spectral shape descriptor is evaluated on the SCAPE and TOSCA 3D shape datasets for shape correspondence. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed binary shape descriptor for the shape correspondence task.

We propose a simple yet effective structural patch decomposition approach for multi-exposure image fusion (MEF) that is robust to ghosting effect. We decompose an image patch into three conceptually independent components: signal strength, signal structure, and mean intensity. Upon fusing these three components separately, we reconstruct a desired patch and place it back into the fused image. This novel patch decomposition approach benefits MEF in many aspects. First, as opposed to most pixel-wise MEF methods, the proposed algorithm does not require post-processing steps to improve visual quality or to reduce spatial artifacts. Second, it handles RGB color channels jointly, and thus produces fused images with more vivid color appearance. Third and most importantly, the direction of the signal structure component in the patch vector space provides ideal information for ghost removal. It allows us to reliably and efficiently reject inconsistent object motions with respect to a chosen reference image without performing computationally expensive motion estimation. We compare the proposed algorithm with 12 MEF methods on 21 static scenes and 12 deghosting schemes on 19 dynamic scenes (with camera and object motion). Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm not only outperforms previous MEF algorithms on static scenes but also consistently produces high quality fused images with little ghosting artifacts for dynamic scenes. Moreover, it maintains a lower computational cost compared with the state-of-The-Art deghosting schemes.11The MATlab code of the proposed algorithm will be made available online. In this paper we present a method to robustify energy-shaping controllers for port-Hamiltonian (pH) systems by adding an integral action that rejects unknown additive disturbances. The proposed controller preserves the pH structure and, by adding to the new energy function a suitable cross term between the plant and the controller coordinates, it avoids the unnatural coordinate transformation used in the past. This paper extends our previous work by relaxing the requirement that the systems Hamiltonian is strictly convex and separable, which allows the controller to be applied to a large class of mechanical systems, including underactuated systems with nonconstant mass matrix. Furthermore, it is shown that the proposed integral action control is robust against unknown damping in the case of fully-Actuated systems. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.
