As wireless communications advances, the complexity of waveform processing places an ever increasing demand on baseband processing resources. As this is a difficult problem for traditional processing solutions to address, many have looked to reconfigurable computing as a solution. For 3G systems, whose intense processing requirements exacerbate these problems, we have previously proposed in (S. Srikanteswara et al, Soft Radio Impl. for 3G and Future High Data Rate Syst., Globecom 2001) the use of custom computing machines (CCMs), also known as adaptive computing machines (ACMs). This paper introduces a method for measuring processor performance which is independent of chip architecture. This method is then used to perform a comparative analysis on the suitability of Virginia Tech's Stallion CCM and Texas, Instrument's TMS320C6201 processor for use in 3G applications.

Unified Parallel C (UPC) is a programming model for shared-memory parallel computing on shared- and distributed-memory systems. The Berkeley UPC software, which operates on top of their Global Addressing Space Networking (GASNet) communication system, is a portable, high-performance implementation of UPC for large-scale clusters. The Scalable Coherent Interface (SCI), a torus-based system-area network (SAN), is known for its ability to provide very low latency transfers as well as its direct support for both shared-memory and message-passing communications. High-speed clusters constructed around SCI promise to he a potent platform for large-scale UPC applications. This work introduces the design of the core API for the new SCI conduit for GASNet and UPC, which is based on active messages (AM). Latency and bandwidth data were collected and are compared with raw SCI results and with other existing GASNet conduits. The outcome shows that the new GASNet SCI conduit is able to provide promising performance in support of UPC applications.

Aircraft networks are used to service mission-critical avionics systems as well as cabin systems such as in-flight entertainment. These networks require that the switches used offer line-rate switching as well as bounded latency and jitter. Gigabit Ethernet offers an interesting replacement to traditional proprietary networks because of its high performance and low cost. We develop a framework for analyzing the abilities of Gigabit Ethernet switches to provide probabilistic guarantees for reliably low latency using quality of service (QoS) controls. From the perspective of control capabilities, management complexity, and implementation success we compare the strengths and weaknesses of three modern Ethernet switches. These switches exhibit a broad range of configuration options and are representative of the different levels of QoS implementation available today. We use the performance metrics of latency, jitter, and packet loss to characterize the success of a service policy. The results from a variety of network, load, and traffic scenarios are presented in terms of these metrics. Through the results, we are able to gain insight into the individual switch implementations of QoS.

RapidIO is an emerging standard for switched interconnection of processors and boards in embedded systems. We use discrete-event simulation to evaluate and prototype RapidIO-based systems with respect to their performance in an environment targeted towards space-based radar applications. This application class makes an ideal test case for a RapidIO feasibility study due to high system throughput requirements and real-time processing constraints. Our results show that a baseline RapidIO system is well suited to space-based radar, providing significant improvements over typical bus-based architectures. Our results also show that extensions to the RapidIO protocol such as cut-through routing and transmitter-controlled flow-control would provide minimal performance improvements for the applications under study.

This work analyzes reservation request access delay in reservation multiple access protocols in light of frame contention slot allocation. Variations of the reservation MAC protocol are widely used in local and cellular network technologies. We derive an analytical model for access delay of reservation request packets that reflects the impact of per-frame number of contention slots on access delay of a request packet. We obtain insightful observations on this relation and as a result show that a new family of delay and throughput constrained dynamic contention slot allocation schemes can be developed.

This paper is about the optimization of beamforming weights in the nonlinear array antenna system. We consider the multi-objective optimization using the evolutionary algorithm. First, we constrain two variables - the width of the main-lobe, the level of the side-lobe. Second, we constrain an additional variable, the energy of beamforming weights, on the former system. In each case, we compute the costs of beamforming weights in each generation. At the end of generations, we can get the Pareto frontier which means the optimal solution set. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed optimization, we compare the results between the proposed algorithm and the conventional window method.

The paper proposes digital beamforming algorithms for vestigial sideband (VSB) based digital TV (DTV) receivers. We consider two types of beamforming algorithms, based on selection and adaptive beamforming algorithms. In the selection beamforming scheme, we make N fixed beams and select one. To do this, we compare the correlations of the received signal through each fixed beam with the pilot symbols. In the adaptive beamforming scheme, we use the least mean square algorithm to get beamforming weights. To be applicable to the VSB system, we modify the standard beamforming algorithms used in cellular communication systems. To apply these algorithms, we have developed a simple VSB system simulator including VSB modulator, synchronizers, and an equalizer. In the VSB modulator, we use the Hilbert transform and the raised-cosine filter. In the synchronizers, we implement the Gardner detector to recover timing synchronization. We use a decision-feedback equalizer. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed system under the Brazil channel model, and show that the beamforming algorithms can improve the overall system performance matching with other parts in the simulation.

The paper proposes a new digital beamforming algorithm for vestigial sideband (VSB) based digital TV receivers. We consider a selection beamforming (SBF) algorithm combined with a spatial equalizer. To realize this, we make fixed beams for the SBF. We then select several beams which satisfy some criteria. We put them into the spatial equalizer. In the SBF, we mitigate the effect of multipath. This helps the synchronizer operating in the channel where the multipath signals are strong. To reduce the multipath component, which still exists in the beams due to the beam-pattern sidelobe, we choose some beams and combine them based on the least mean squares algorithm. To apply this algorithm, we have developed a simple VSB system simulator including VSB modulator. synchronizers, and an equalizer. We show that the proposed algorithms can improve the overall system performance, matching with other parts in the simulation.

This paper presents a novel personal authentication system using palmprints. The technology uses the unique information extracted from palmprints (such as principal lines, wrinkles, and textures) during the authentication process to eliminate possible frauds that cannot be avoided by traditional methods (using password or cards). The uniqueness of features and robustness of algorithm make the system far superior to existing biometric systems. This paper first presents the system architecture construction and the algorithm design. Being a robust and reliable system, it was tested by more than 8,000 palmprint images with very low false acceptance rate (0.02%), and a relative high genuine acceptance rate (98.83%). The whole process time for once authentication is less than 1 second. Finally some possible applications are discussed which could be benefited by using palmprint technology. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.
