Over the years, Machine Learning models have been successfully employed on neuroimaging data for accurately predicting brain age. Deviations from the healthy brain aging pattern are associated with the accelerated brain aging and brain abnormalities. Hence, efficient and accurate diagnosis techniques are required to elicit accurate brain age estimations. Several contributions have been reported in the past for this purpose, resorting to different data-driven modeling methods. Recently, deep neural networks (also referred to as deep learning) have become prevalent in manifold neuroimaging studies, including brain age estimation. In this review, we offer a comprehensive analysis of the literature related to the adoption of deep learning for brain age estimation with neuroimaging data. We detail and analyze different deep learning architectures used for this application, pausing at research works published to date quantitatively exploring their application. We also examine different brain age estimation frameworks, comparatively exposing their advantages and weaknesses. Finally, the review concludes with an outlook towards future directions that should be followed by prospective studies. The ultimate goal of this paper is to establish a common and informed reference for newcomers and experienced researchers willing to approach brain age estimation by using deep learning models. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

Asia’s Human-computer Interaction (HCI) landscape is rapidly evolving, yet it faces distinct challenges in curriculum development, research establishment, and career navigation. Pixel-Inconsistency Modeling for Image Manipulation Localization

Digital image forensics plays a crucial role in image authentication and manipulation localization. Despite the progress powered by deep neural networks, existing forgery localization methodologies exhibit limitations when deployed to unseen datasets and perturbed images (i.e., lack of generalization and robustness to real-world applications). To circumvent these problems and aid image integrity, this paper presents a generalized and robust manipulation localization model through the analysis of pixel inconsistency artifacts. The rationale is grounded on the observation that most image signal processors (ISP) involve the demosaicing process, which introduces pixel correlations in pristine images. Moreover, manipulating operations, including splicing, copy-move, and inpainting, directly affect such pixel regularity. We, therefore, first split the input image into several blocks and design masked self-attention mechanisms to model the global pixel dependency in input images. Simultaneously, we optimize another local pixel dependency stream to mine local manipulation clues within input forgery images. In addition, we design novel Learning-to-Weight Modules (LWM) to combine features from the two streams, thereby enhancing the final forgery localization performance. To improve the training process, we propose a novel Pixel-Inconsistency Data Augmentation (PIDA) strategy, driving the model to focus on capturing inherent pixel-level artifacts instead of mining semantic forgery traces. This work establishes a comprehensive benchmark integrating 16 representative detection models across 12 datasets. Extensive experiments show that our method successfully extracts inherent pixel-inconsistency forgery fingerprints and achieve state-of-the-art generalization and robustness performances in image manipulation localization. In recent years, the Named Data Networking (NDN) paradigm has emerged as a promising candidate for future Internet architecture. Underpinned by the notion of a data-centric forwarding philosophy, NDN is purported to offer seamless network communication for mobile users. However, while it provides inherent support for consumer mobility, viable solutions for producer mobility remain insufficient. Therefore, this study aims to highlight the mobility issues in NDN, particularly concerning high latency, Interest packet loss, and Interest retransmission, with a focus on producer mobility. In this paper, we critically review previous works based on proactive and reactive approaches. Furthermore, we propose a mobility management model that adopts a proactive approach, estimating the producer's handoff time from the connected access point. The proposed model leverages this information to notify consumers about the moving producer, aiming to prevent consumers from sending Interest to the mobile producer during handoff and thereby overcome the associated challenges.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) has rapidly advanced the field of computer vision by enabling machines to create and interpret visual data with unprecedented sophistication. This transformation builds upon a foundation of generative models to produce realistic images, videos, and 3D/4D content. Traditionally, generative models primarily focus on visual fidelity while often neglecting the physical plausibility of generated content. This gap limits their effectiveness in applications requiring adherence to real-world physical laws, such as robotics, autonomous systems, and scientific simulations. As generative AI evolves to increasingly integrate physical realism and dynamic simulation, its potential to function as a "world simulator" expands—enabling the modeling of interactions governed by physics and bridging the divide between virtual and physical realities. This survey systematically reviews this emerging field of physics-aware generative AI in computer vision, categorizing methods based on how they incorporate physical knowledge—either through explicit simulation or implicit learning. We analyze key paradigms, discuss evaluation protocols, and identify future research directions. By offering a comprehensive overview, this survey aims to help future developments in physically grounded generation for vision. Backdoor attacks pose a significant threat during the model’s training phase. Attackers craft pre-defined triggers to break deep neural networks, ensuring the model accurately classifies clean samples during inference yet erroneously classifies samples added with these triggers. Recent studies have shown that speaker recognition systems trained on large-scale data are susceptible to backdoor attacks. Existing attackers employ unnoticed ambient sounds as triggers. However, these sounds are not inherently part of the training samples themselves. In essence, triggers can be designed to maintain an intrinsic connection with the original speech to enhance stealthiness. Our paper presents a novel attack methodology named Speed Master, which undermines deep neural networks by manipulating the speed of speech samples. Specifically, we execute poison-only backdoor attacks using speed or tempo adjustment. Changes in speech rate have become a common occurrence, as seen on platforms that allow users to adjust playback speed. In real-world scenarios, people naturally adjust their speaking rate depending on the context. As a result, changes in a speaker’s speech rate are typically perceived as normal and are unlikely to raise suspicion. Furthermore, detecting such subtle adjustments becomes challenging for users without reference speech. Our comprehensive experiments demonstrate that Speed Master can achieve an ASR over 99% in the digital domain, with only a 0.6% poisoning rate. Additionally, we validate the feasibility of Speed Master in the real world and its resistance to typical defensive measures. The growing number of objects in the Low Earth Orbit is becoming increasingly concerning to astronomers and space missions - particularly due to the limitations in tracking accuracy due to the availability and placements of surveillance sensors. This paper connects to this issue, presenting the development of an open-source, ray-traced, signal-level pulsed radar simulator for use in exploring and planning space monitoring solutions without using real-time data feeds. The simulator was also developed around the use of the NVIDIA® OptiX™ engine to accommodate its ray-tracing features and accelerate performance. This was designed to aid astronomers and researchers in space situational awareness applications through the simulation of radar designs for orbital surveillance experiments. The developed tool was also compared against a more streamlined application that used point-model approximations for quick-look simulations, and the trade-offs between both simulators were evaluated. While the use of ray tracing resulted in significant speed costs, it was found that the algorithm also introduced more realistic results relative to point-model simulations - providing various advantages in scenarios involving shadowing and multiscatter.

An Adaptive Column Compression Family for Self-Driving Databases

Modern in-memory databases are typically used for high-performance workloads, therefore they have to be optimized for small memory footprint and high query speed at the same time. Data compression has the potential to reduce memory requirements but often reduces query speed too. In this paper we propose a novel, adaptive compressor that offers a new trade-off point of these dimensions, achieving better compression than LZ4 while reaching query speeds close to the fastest existing segment encoders. We evaluate our compressor both with synthetic data in isolation and on the TPC-H and Join Order Benchmarks, integrated into a modern relational column store, Hyrise. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. A Joint Communication and Computation Framework for Digital Twin over Wireless Networks

In this paper, the problem of low-latency communication and computation resource allocation for digital twin (DT) over wireless networks is investigated. In the considered model, multiple physical devices in the physical network (PN) needs to frequently offload the computation task related data to the digital network twin (DNT), which is generated and controlled by the central server. Due to limited energy budget of the physical devices, both computation accuracy and wireless transmission power must be considered during the DT procedure. This joint communication and computation problem is formulated as an optimization problem whose goal is to minimize the overall transmission delay of the system under total PN energy and DNT model accuracy constraints. To solve this problem, an alternating algorithm with iteratively solving device scheduling, power control, and data offloading subproblems. For the device scheduling subproblem, the optimal solution is obtained in closed form through the dual method. For the special case with one physical device, the optimal number of transmission times is reveled. Based on the theoretical findings, the original problem is transformed into a simplified problem and the optimal device scheduling can be found. Numerical results verify that the proposed algorithm can reduce the transmission delay of the system by up to 51.2% compared to the conventional schemes. © 2024, CC BY-SA.

Foundation models, large-scale, pre-trained deep-learning models adapted to a wide range of downstream tasks have gained significant interest lately in various deep-learning problems undergoing a paradigm shift with the rise of these models. Trained on large-scale dataset to bridge the gap between different modalities, foundation models facilitate contextual reasoning, generalization, and prompt capabilities at test time. The predictions of these models can be adjusted for new tasks by augmenting the model input with task-specific hints called prompts without requiring extensive labeled data and retraining. Capitalizing on the advances in computer vision, medical imaging has also marked a growing interest in these models. With the aim of assisting researchers in navigating this direction, this survey intends to provide a comprehensive overview of foundation models in the domain of medical imaging. Specifically, we initiate our exploration by providing an exposition of the fundamental concepts forming the basis of foundation models. Subsequently, we offer a methodical taxonomy of foundation models within the medical domain, proposing a classification system primarily structured around training strategies, while also incorporating additional facets such as application domains, imaging modalities, specific organs of interest, and the algorithms integral to these models. Furthermore, we emphasize the practical use case of some selected approaches and then discuss the opportunities, applications, and future directions of these large-scale pre-trained models, for analyzing medical images. In the same vein, we address the prevailing challenges and research pathways associated with foundational models in medical imaging. These encompass the areas of interpretability, data management, computational requirements, and the nuanced issue of contextual comprehension.
