The ability to retrieve accurate information from databases without an extensive knowledge of the contents and organization of each database is extremely beneficial to the dissemination and utilization of freight data. Advances in the artificial intelligence and information sciences provide an opportunity to develop query capturing algorithms to retrieve relevant keywords from freight-related natural language queries. The challenge is correctly identifying and classifying these keywords. On their own, current natural language processing algorithms are insufficient in performing this task for freight-related queries. High performance machine learning algorithms also require an annotated corpus of named entities which currently does not exist in the freight domain. This paper proposes a hybrid named entity recognition approach which draws on the individual strengths of models to correctly identify entities. The hybrid approach resulted in a greater precision for named entity recognition of freight entities - a key requirement for accurate information retrieval from freight data sources. © 2015 ASCE.

Banda Aceh is a low-lying city located at the northern tip of Sumatra Island and situated at the conjuncture of Malacca Strait and the Andaman Sea. A Sea Level Rise (SLR) rate at 7 mm/year has been observed around this region. In the next 50 years, this city will face a serious challenge to encounter impacts of the sea level rise, such as frequent coastal floodings. This study is aimed at estimating impacts of the sea level rise induced coastal floodings on several types of coastal structures and city drainage system. Numerical simulations of Delft3D were applied to investigate the influence of the gradual sea level rise in 50 years. The hydrodynamic process of coastal flooding and sediment transport were simulated by Delft3D-Flow. Topography and bathymetry data were collected from GEBCO and updated with the available nautical chart (DISHIDROS, JICA, and field measurements). Hydrodynamic process gains the flow process revealing the level of the sea water intrusion also observed in the model. Main rivers (Krueng Aceh, Krueng Neng, and Alue Naga Flood Canal) and the drainage system were observed to see the tides effects on coastal structures and drainage system. The impact on coastal community focusing on affected area, shoreline retreat, the rate of sea intrusion was analyzed with spatial tools. New coastal line, coastal flooding vulnerable area, and the community susceptibility properties map influenced by 50 years sea level rise is produced. This research found that the city needs to address strategies to anticipate the exacerbating impacts of the sea level rise by managing its coastal spatial planning and modify its drainage system, especially at the drainage outlets.

Effect of ozone on the performance of a hybrid ceramic membrane-biological activated carbon process

Two hybrid processes including ozonation-ceramic membrane-biological activated carbon （BAC）（Process A） and ceramic membrane-BAC （Process B） were compared to treat polluted raw water. The performance of hybrid processes was evaluated with the removal efficiencies of turbidity, ammonia and organic matter. The results indicated that more than 99% of particle count was removed by both hybrid processes and ozonation had no significant effect on its removal. BAC filtration greatly improved the removal of ammonia. Increasing the dissolved oxygen to 30.0 mg/L could lead to a removal of ammonia with concentrations as high as 7.80 mg/L and 8.69 mg/L for Processes A and B, respectively. The average removal efficiencies of total organic carbon and ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm （UV254, a parameter indicating organic matter with aromatic structure） were 49% and 52% for Process A, 51% and 48% for Process B, respectively. Some organic matter was oxidized by ozone and this resulted in reduced membrane fouling and increased membrane flux by 25%-30%. However, pre-ozonation altered the components of the raw water and affected the microorganisms in the BAC, which may impact the removals of organic matter and nitrite negatively.

This paper presents a practical application for the integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) with scheduling and cost planning. It also describes the steps undertaken to plan and re-plan a project at each new decision taken by the multidisciplinary team. The study was conducted during the development of a low income housing enterprise near the city of Curitiba in Brazil. The undertaken application demonstrates how to extract information from the BIM model for use in production planning and control on site construction. Throughout the work breakdown structure and the unit costs for bill of materials, the model can be integrated with planning and helps the execution phase as well. With 4D/5D simulation, the information and decision-making of the design phase is taken to the construction site. The results show some decisions and uses of the integrated model in the design phase and in production planning and control on the construction site. Some difficulties experienced by the development team are also reported. The main conclusions of this study confirm the advantages and disadvantages of using 4D/5D BIM modeling found in the literature, such as supporting lean construction principles on production. © ASCE 2014.

A construction project in the public sector has additional complexity due to the number of disciplines and stakeholders with individual interests and different ways of expressing and interpreting information. The approach of collaboration helps to define common goals and commitment between the parties, and the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) acts as the support structure for relationships due to its characteristics to support communication, graphical representations and project development. This paper aims to apply a collaboration model supported by ICT in a building and infrastructure design process related to the public sector, listing the reasons why the parties collaborate and cooperate, the necessary structure and the ICT aspects that can provide support. The research method is exploratory in a case study fashion which consisted of a theoretical research to define the initial collaboration model framework adaptation and the field study to validate it. The case study was developed in a City Hall in the South of Brazil. The results present opportunities for reflection about the collaborative management of public projects and confirm that organizational and behavioral aspects are relevant to better understand the improvements generated by ICT use by public building design teams. © ASCE 2014.

Machinery- and vehicle-related fatalities represented 32% of construction fatalities in 2010, and backover fatalities were recorded as one of the main culprits due to limited visibility. In order to minimize backover accidents, sensor-based proximity warning technologies - such as video camera, radar, ultrasonic, and tag-based systems - have been developed, tested and in use in many new passenger vehicles. This paper addresses potential implementation of sensor-based proximity warning systems to minimize backing accidents by reviewing sensing technologies applicable for construction equipment and presenting a formalized framework of sensor-based proximity warning systems evaluation. The presented framework includes a generic sensor system selection approach and performance testbed protocol. The proposed framework is expected to help decision makers objectively evaluate sensor-based proximity warning systems in their selection to implementation in the construction work zones. © 2013 American Society of civil Engineers.

The architecture, engineering, construction and facility management (AECFM) industry has been experiencing many changes since inexpensive networked, mobile computing devices have become ubiquitous. With the rising amount of information and data generated in the life cycle of capital projects, information modeling and data interoperability have become a critical element in design, engineering, construction, and maintenance of capital facilities. Recent advances in Visualization, Information Modeling, and Simulation (VIMS) have the potential to address a number of these pressing challenges. The objective of this vision paper is to identify grand challenges related to Information Modeling. This is a companion paper to two others, which will address the areas of Visualization and Simulation. These papers are primers for the VIMS Grand Challenges Report, to be developed by an expert task force assembled by the American Society of civil Engineers (ASCE) Technical Council on Computing and Information Technology (TCCIT) VIMS Committee. © 2013 American Society of civil Engineers.
