The Lancang-Mekong River Basin is facing booming water resources infrastructure development, long-term transboundary conflicts and trade-offs between economic goals and ecosystem services provision. Optimizing the pathway towards sustainable infrastructure operation has lacked multisector-coordinated and decision behaviour-based perspectives for transboundary water systems. In this study we quantified how, and to what extent, transboundary cooperation generates economic and environmental co-benefits by jointly using a coupled simulation–optimization approach and cooperative game theoretical analysis. We found that full cooperation outweighs partial or non-cooperation modes to promote economic benefits by 3 to 21% and to minimize the losses in fishery and sediment transport from 23% and 60% to 12% and 22%, respectively. Full cooperation becomes more beneficial and stable alongside infrastructure expansion, climate change and satisfying the hydrological needs of river ecosystems. These findings underscore the importance of full cooperation for sustaining socio-environmental systems and highlight the need for a benefit reallocation mechanism and designed flow management to stabilize basin-level full cooperation in the Lancang-Mekong River *** Analysis quantifies how, and to what extent, transboundary cooperation generates economic and environmental co-benefits in the Lancang-Mekong River Basin, highlighting the importance of benefit sharing for sustaining socio-environmental systems.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are considered the limiting resources for advancing clean technologies and electronics. Because global REEs reserve is limited, non-conventional and secondary sources are being investigated for recovery. Here, we investigated wet and dry sand from seven Southern California beaches for sixteen REEs. These include five light REEs, two medium REEs, and nine heavy REEs, separated by their atomic weight. The mass of the magnetically separated metallic compounds ranged from 15.19 – 129.91 g per kg of dry sand in the studied sea beaches in Southern California. The total REEs concentration ranged from 1,168.1 – 6,816.7 µg per kg of wet sand (dry sand basis) and 1,474.7 – 7,483.8 µg per kg of dry sand. Cerium (Ce) and Yttrium (Y) were the most prevalent REEs in these beaches ranging from 387.4 – 2,241.1 µg kg-1 and 104.5 – 2,302.3 µg kg-1 of sand respectively. This study found light REEs concentration accounted for 70 – 80% of total rare earth elements in the studied beaches. Urbanization and population growth in India have quickened, leading to an annual generation of around 62 million tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW). Improper management of organic waste presents a major environmental problem due to air and water pollution, soil contamination and greenhouse gas production. This research aims to develop refuse-derived fuel (RDF) as a viable option, converting waste into a high-calorific energy carrier for industrial use. The RDF samples were collected from five strategic locations in Uttar Pradesh: Morta Site, Pipeline Site, and Sector 146 Noida, covering various waste compositions found at these landfill sites. Proximate and ultimate analyses of the RDF prepared from these sources were conducted, followed by in-depth Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) to validate its suitability as a potential feedstock. Careful waste segregation and treatment for better fuel quality can help minimize the difference in calorific values between different sites. Based on RDF tests, the waste-to-energy technology can divert over 30 % of solid waste from landfills and cut greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 25 % compared to traditional disposal methods. Unlike RDF, which is part of the replacement line for coal in industrial furnaces such as thermal power plants, it eliminates over 15 % and 20 % of sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). Ensuring that RDFs support sustainable energy technologies and align with circular economy principles, the study's results could enhance energy efficiency in waste management and complement environmental policy goals across all states in India and worldwide. © 2024 The Authors

Public perceptions of spatial planning, residential selection, and tsunami preparedness efforts in Banda Aceh

In the last 7,500 years ago, at least 11 tsunamis have hit Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar. However, Banda Aceh communities’ preparedness efforts has not been fully implemented in a sustainable manner. There is often little to no warning before a tsunami hits a nearby place. The initial planning, selection of evacuation zones, and maintaining of evacuation routes provide some of the basis of tsunami preparedness. This study attempts to evaluate how the people of Banda Aceh perceive the city’s spatial planning, the factors that influence where people choose to live, and tsunami preparedness measures. Data were obtained through questionnaire survey involving 305 household surveys. This study describes whether the community has received socialization about the City Spatial Plan and whether the planning has considered the tsunami hazard. This study also investigates the elements that influence people’s housing decisions, including determining if the tsunami hazard is still considered. This study is expected to assist the City Government in providing scholarly material related to aspects of tsunami mitigation.

Optimization of vertical spacing between each row of a vertical shelf to meet minimum sunlight requirement for strawberries

Vertical farming (VF) allows for more plants to be cultivated in a particular land area, maximizing land-use efficiency. VF employs multileveled shelves enabling crops to be planted at each level. This paper aims to develop an optimization model that could generate a required setup of a vertical shelf that would meet the sunlight requirements of strawberries. Firstly, the simulation model was developed using Rhino (Rhinoceros) software with Grasshopper plugin, which can predict the sunlight availability at each VF shelf level. The model is validated by the experiment in Chiang Mai province, Thailand, at an elevation higher than 310 m above mean sea level. The experiment set up of the VF shelf with three levels was constructed, and the solar radiation values were recorded and validated against the radiation predicted by the model. The validated model is used to simulate the sunlight radiation on each level of the shelf for different shelf designs with varying vertical spacings between each level. These sets of predicted radiation values and vertical spacings are used to train the ANN (Artificial Neural Network) model. The ANN simulation model was developed using MATLAB software with Simulink and Neural Net Fitting App. The trained ANN model has an MSE (Mean Squared Error) of 0.00019621 and an R (the correlation coefficient) value of 0.9992. As a result, the optimization model could successfully give out the vertical spacing between each level of the VF shelf with an input of desired sunlight availability on each level. For the PPFD (Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density) of 600 µmol/m2/s on both levels, the spacing should be 51.34 cm from the top to the middle (y1) and 48.69 cm from the middle to the bottom (y2). To receive 600 and 500 µmol/m2/s on the middle and bottom level respectively, the levels should be placed 66.77 cm (y1) and 30.89 cm (y2) apart.

Multimodal facilities are being built in a majority of urban areas to accommodate both motorized and non-motorized traffic. The resulting transportation system is susceptible to complex interactions between different modes and users. These complex interactions are hard to quantify and capture on a regular basis. There is a need to rely on a microsimulation platform to replicate such real-world scenarios and forecast future conditions. This study focuses on assessing the effect of heterogeneous traffic conditions involving multiple modes like light rail transit (LRT), walking, bicycling, and motorized traffic on vehicle delay at intersections using Vissim traffic simulation software. A 2.5-mile urban arterial corridor comprising of seven at-grade and two grade-separated signalized intersections along US-29 route in the city of Charlotte, NC, USA was chosen for analysis and modeling. Base simulation model was developed by replicating the traffic scenario for the year 2018 (without LRT and non-motorized traffic). External controllers like VisVAP and Viswalk were used to assign signal priority and model heterogenous traffic conditions. The vehicle operational performance of the corridor improved along the major street after the addition of the LRT. An increase in vehicle delay on the major street was observed with an increase in the non-motorized traffic. Contrarily, the operational performance of the cross-streets at at-grade intersections did not see any significant change due to the addition of non-motorized traffic. The proposed framework assists planners to assess the impact of adding a new transit system like LRT and associated non-motorized traffic on the urban corridor. © 2022

Study region: The Choushui River Fan, Taiwan. Study focus: Groundwater overdraft has led to not only groundwater depletion but also environmental disasters, such as subsidence and seawater intrusion in the Choushui River Alluvial Fan, Taiwan. The influence of land subsidence is gradually shifting from the coast to the center of the fan and threatening Taiwan high-speed rail. However, it remains a great challenge to manage and model the groundwater aquifer due to numerous unregulated wells. This study maps and locates private wells using deep learning technologies. We trained and validated convolutional-based deep learning neural networks (DNNs), using street view images. We applied the DNNs to a land subsidence area along the Taiwan high-speed rail, termed the Golden Corridor in Taiwan. The results showed that DNNs can recognize pumping wells with at least 90% accuracy. The testing cases showed their capability to recall all the pumping wells in three road segments along the Golden Corridor. Finally, we spatially estimated potential pumping of a subsidence area using the fine-trained DNNs. New hydrological insights for the region: Given the prevalence of unknown private pumping in the Choushui River Fan, our image data-driven computer vision approach not only eases labor-intensive private well investigations but also advances hydrologic understanding for groundwater modeling. We enhance comprehension of unknown sinks and provide their spatial distribution to improve groundwater modeling. © 2023 The Authors
