Future human spaceflight beyond low-Earth orbit will bring substantial changes and new requirements to the development of fully sustainable, healthy indoor human environments across a range of gravitational, radiative, and thermal conditions. One key aspect is understanding (and potentially leveraging) microorganisms that must coexist with humans, plants, and animals in enclosed habitats (their microbiota or microbiomes). Modern, genome-resolved microbiome science provides an opportunity to better understand how we can utilize microbes to optimize space missions and protect human health and well-being long-term. Microorganisms will be critical to mission success due to their direct or indirect interactions with 1) humans, 2) other living systems (e.g., plant and animal life as a food source and for experimentation), and 3) the built environment. For example, the human gut microbiome is a complex community that has important implications for human health and performance that include mental health, nutrition intake, and immune system function. The health of plant microbiomes is also critical for sustainable, dependable, and nutritious food production. Humans, plants, and other living systems (e.g., animals used in experimentation) will also shed microbes into the built environment, which may impact human exposure, plant health, system integrity, and planetary protection from microbial contamination in both forward and reverse directions. Microbes from all three systems will interact, resulting in potentially important 'non-linear' system implications that must be understood for the overall long-term sustainability of hardware, crew, and other living systems. The study assessed the physicochemical and biological properties of selected groundwater sources in the Southeastern part of the Western Region, to assess the impact on water quality and health risk. The Piper Trilinear plot was used to categorize the water samples into water types based on the dominant anion and cation concentrations. Statistical analysis (One way ANOVA and two sample t-test) was used to determine the sources of variation in the data at 95% confidence interval. The Water Quality Index (WQI) and Hazard Quotient (HQ) were used to estimate the water quality and health risk respectively. TDS and turbidity were above the acceptable WHO guidelines in 16.7% of the samples with a mildly acidic pH in 83.3% of the water samples. Also, 91.7% of the water samples were contaminated with total coliform (TC) and 25% with e-coli. Generally, the groundwater samples were dominated by Ca 2+ and HCO 3- ion water types. The variations between parameters were found not significant for all the parameters (p>0.05). Water samples in the North are of good quality with a mean WQI of 96, but of poor quality in the South with a mean WQI of 144.6. HQ values for all the samples were less than 0.1, suggesting less harmful impacts of the heavy metal concentrations on human health. Overall, the results showed the presence of heavy metals in the groundwater sources sampled, however in quantities with low health risks either through oral or dermal channels. Groundwater within the communities is good for domestic purposes but needs treatment for drinking. To improve upon the study, it is recommended that further studies consider a higher number of samples and include other accessible groundwater stations where possible.

Two-stage stochastic optimization for emergency management of metro systems under uncertain storm floods

Climate change and urbanization have increasingly exacerbated the threat of storm floods to urban metro systems. To enhance the flood emergency management of metro systems, this study proposes a two-stage stochastic optimization model. In this model, the closure decisions for risky stations and the allocation of flood control resources are implemented before and during the rainstorm, respectively, to maximize the average utility of passengers in the metro network. A case study on the Shanghai metro system is conducted to demonstrate the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed model. The results indicate that the two-stage stochastic optimization model can generate refined closure schemes and dynamically adaptive protection schemes for risky metro stations. Compared to one-stage strategies that do not consider the uncertainty of rainstorms, the two-stage model achieves higher passenger utility. Furthermore, the mechanisms behind the closure decisions made by the two-stage model are interpreted using an explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) technique, SHAP (SHapley Additive explanation). It is revealed that a metro station with low passenger volume in a high-rainfall sub-catchment has a greater probability of being closed before floods. Future works can be conducted to further explore feedback mechanisms between the two optimization stages or optimize the location and inventory of resource warehouses for metro systems.

Inner City communities have traditionally been overlooked and often forgotten in the satellite and ground-based remote sensing revolution. For too long, undergraduate minority students from these communities have been marginalized, ostracized, and unprepared to participate in the plethora of remote sensing applications that yet remain new, foreign, and mysterious. Even basic understanding of the amazing tool of remote sensing is unknown to them. These students lack the exposure, the awareness, the understanding, and the engagement in the foray of remote sensing and the unique lens it provides to probe and unearth new ways of gaining knowledge about the environment. To adequately prepare inner-city students to become members of the next generation of geoscientists, to empower and sustain underserved neighborhoods, and to assist in replenishing the geoscience workforce, unique paradigms of teaching and learning about remote sensing are *** the center for Remote Sensing and Earth System Sciences (ReSESS) at the New York City College of Technology (City Tech), remote sensing is being used as a catalyst to attract and to engage students from underserved communities in studying urban climate within their local neighborhoods. Results indicate that this approach of using remote sensing to attract students to urban climate increased awareness and understanding in the geosciences, and it motivated students to share their newfound knowledge in environmental sustainability initiatives with their fellow local citizens.

Growing population, rapid urbanization, and increasing travel demand emphasize the need for reliable public transportation systems and sustainable transportation planning. A reliable bus service fosters a more significant, satisfied, and committed base of users. This research focuses on examining the association between on-time performance (OTP) and road network, demographic, socioeconomic, and land use characteristics to identify relevant external factors for proactive and reliable public transportation system planning. The analysis was conducted at a bus stop level. Bus arrival/departure data from the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) was obtained. The road network, demographic, socioeconomic, and land use characteristics were captured within 0.25-mile and 0.50-mile buffers. Pearson correlation analysis was conducted to understand the association between OTP and road network, demographic, socioeconomic, and land use characteristics by day of the week and time of the day. The results show that OTP is associated with external factors such as the number of signalized or cul-de-sac/dead-end intersections, number of lanes, network density, population, income (median and total), and land use types related to residential and commercial/employment purposes within the bus stop vicinity. The findings provide vital insights for transit agencies to enhance scheduling, service and maximize benefits, effectively utilize available resources, plan, and provide equitable services to all riders. © 2023 The Author(s)

Compared with those provided by polar-orbiting satellites/sensors (e.g., Landsat/MODIS), new-generation geostationary satellites, such as Himawari-8 and Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R series (GOES-R), offer temporally continuous and much more frequent observations of the land surface over the course of the diurnal cycle. In this study, Himawari-8 land surface temperature (LST) data and GLASS leaf area index (LAI) were assimilated into a coupled two-source surface energy balance–vegetation dynamics model (TSEB-VDM) via the variational data assimilation (VDA) method to retrieve the regional sensible heat flux ( H ), latent heat flux (LE), and gross primary productivity (GPP) (hereafter referred to as the VDA Himawari-8 scheme). Regional H , LE, and GPP values were estimated across the Heihe River Basin (HRB) in northwestern China, with a spatial resolution of 0.02° × 0.02°. Moreover, LST data from the MODIS, which is an instrument onboard polar-orbiting satellites (i.e., Terra and Aqua), were assimilated into the TSEB-VDM model (hereafter referred to as the VDA MODIS scheme) for comparison with the VDA Himawari-8 scheme. Four unknown parameters of the TSEB-VDM model, i.e., the neutral bulk heat transfer coefficient ( C HN ), the evaporative fractions of the soil and canopy (EF S and EF C , respectively), and the specific leaf area, were optimized via the VDA approach. The estimated H and LE values were validated against ground measurements from the large-aperture scintillator, and the GPP estimates were validated against eddy covariance data at three sites (Arou, Daman, and Sidaoqiao) in the HRB. The results indicated that the assimilation of geostationary satellite-based LST data significantly improved the performance of the VDA model. The three-site-average root mean square errors (RMSEs) of the H , LE, and GPP estimates from the VDA MODIS scheme were 45.27 W m −2 , 83.77 W m −2 , and 3.30 g C m −2 d −1 , respectively. An assessment of the dynamics of land cover and use in and around a Protected Area (PA) located in the Área de Preservação Ambiental da Serra da Mantiqueira (APASM;Mantiqueira Mountain Range Environmental Protection Area) and Parque Nacional do Itatiaia (PNI;Itatiaia National Park) has been developed. This PA is part of the Brazilian Mata Atlântica (MA;Atlantic Forest) biome, which is of great importance in providing water resources and in biodiversity maintenance since it is one of the largest and most populated urban centers in Brazil. In two contiguous drainage basins, with an area of 24,757.65 hectares (ha), proposals have been sought that lead to monitoring of forests pressured by anthropic actions that have as an inductor vehicle the roads built around the PA. Results obtained by Remote Sensing (RS) data show that pasture areas have grown 43% between 1985 and 2005 and forest areas have declined 20% in the same period. However, between 2005 and 2017, there was a 22% decline in pasture area and rehabilitation in forest areas by 26%. Urban spots have steadily grown by nearly 120% between 1985 and 2017. In a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment and using multiple-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) with a weighted sum to environmental attributes of roads and urban spots, it has also been verified that 85% of the study area is under high or very high pressure, which can jeopardize the maintenance of biodiversity and water resources in the region due to population increase induced by secondary roads and their paving, which moves towards the PNI limits. © 2021

Upcycling waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles has attracted intensive research interests. This simultaneously alleviates plastic pollution and achieves a waste-to-resource strategy. Waste PET water bottles were used to fabricate value-added activated carbon (AC) electrodes for capacitive deionization (CDI). The KOH activation temperature (greater than 700 °C) prominently affected the physi-chemical properties and desalination performance of PET-derived activated carbons (PET-AC). Profiting from a large Brunauer-Emmet-Teller specific surface area (1448 m g) with a good mesoporous structure (the ratio of the mesopore volume to the total pore volume was 41.3%), PET-AC-1000 (activated at 1000 °C) possessed a huge specific capacitance of 108 F g for capacitive ion storage. Moreover, when utilized as the electrode material in single-pass CDI, PET-AC-1000 exhibited a maximum electrosorption capacity of 10.82 ± 0.11 mg g and a low level of energy consumption (0.07 kWh mol), associated with good electrochemical charging-discharging cyclic stability. The results provide a promising facile approach to tackle the challenge of plastic pollution and promote the advancement of electrode materials for economic affordable and energy-efficient electrochemical desalination process, which meets the United Nations (UN) sustainable development goals (SDGs).
