We spend much of our time in built environments where we are continually exposed to microorganisms. Within indoor environments on earth, or in environments such as occupied spacecraft, these bacterial and fungal exposures can impact human health. Exposures to microbial growth may be particularly harmful, which is predominantly influenced by moisture availability to dust that contain microbes. This dust is hydroscopic and quickly absorbs water from the air;therefore, when ambient relative humidity levels reach a certain threshold, microbial growth will occur. Different microbial species may be harmful in different ways, but the occurrence of active growth may be the most important factor regardless of taxonomy. In confined environments such as spacecraft elevated moisture conditions are expected due to human activities such as breathing, hygiene routines, food preparation and exercise. These activities have diurnal variations which will influence the water availability for microbial growth over time. NASA has a robust monitoring program for spacecraft that is designed to eliminate or mitigate any potential health effects originating from microorganisms. However, the current standards do not account for microbial growth in spacecraft. Our goal is to propose improved microbial standards for spacecraft based on expected microbial growth due to elevated relative humidity, which is easy to measure. Standards will protect human health and spacecraft integrity. Our hypothesis is that we can determine if growth will be activated based on the number of hours per day spent above a relative humidity threshold. The environment will be considered acceptable if growth is prevented. The first step in creating these standards is to experimentally determine the time required for activation of microbial growth under various moisture conditions. Comparison of Taylor Galerkin and FTCS models for dam-break simulation

The aim of this paper is to compare the ability of two numerical models to simulate two-dimensional dam-break flows. Dam-break modelling is important in reducing the high-risk of dam failure by determining the water flow movement and its effect on buildings downstream. In this study, the Taylor Galerkin and Forward Time Central Space method is presented to simulate 2-D dam-break flow. The Hansen filter is applied to both methods to reduce numerical instability oscillations in the model. The filters were used for each time step at each computing point. The model is verified by comparing the result simulation with numerical results from previous studies. The result show that Taylor Galerkin numerical scheme with Hansen filter is successful to simulate the problem of 2-D dam-break. Also, the Taylor Galerkin model has better results than the FTCS model. Studies like this are needed for mitigation efforts in the event of dam failure.

The increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii as an opportunistic pathogen in wound infections raises significant concerns due to its antibiotic resistance and biofilm-mediated antibiotic tolerance. This underscores the urgent need to explore an alternative approach to effectively managing wound infections caused by MDR A. baumannii. In this study, combining subinhibitory concentrations of curcumin (25 µg/ml) or chitosan (156 µg/ml) with photodynamic therapy-PDT (10 J/cm²) resulted in a significant reduction of planktonic viabilities and biofilm biovolume of MDR A. baumannii clinical isolates in vitro. In murine A. baumannii-associated wound infection, a combination of curcumin (25 µg/ml) or chitosan (156 µg/ml) with PDT (10 J/cm²) resulted in complete bacterial eradication with wound healing at Day 15 of post-treatments with these combination therapies. Our study demonstrated that combining curcumin or chitosan with PDT at their subinhibitory concentrations represents a promising alternative strategy as localized therapy for effectively managing A. baumannii-associated wound infection. © 2025 The Authors

Assessment of Bridge Deck Movement under the Impact of Environmental Factors and Traffic Load

The Bridge Health Monitoring (BHM) system has become crucial for long-span bridge structures. This study aims to assess the bridge deck movement based-on GPS time series data and environmental data obtained from BHM system. The correlation and regression analysis are utilized to find out the pairwise relationship between the bridge deck movement in all directions and environmental factors as well as traffic load. The result shows the highest correlations in bridge deck vertical movements, the symmetrical oscillation in different parts of bridge deck and it also reveals the impact of air temperature change, wind velocity and traffic vehicle on bridge deck movement in all directions.

Blended learning can be considered an approach that combines face-to-face and online periods in education through the integration of some technological resources, such as media centers. The present research sought to investigate the panorama of scientific production on blended learning and identify evidence of how media centers are used to support this type of teaching. This is a bibliometric study carried out based on the principles of the Systematic Literature Review (SLR). Although the results indicate an increase in production, a high rate of authors with only one published work was identified, which can be interpreted as an expanding topic. The United States stood out as the country that contributed the most with research and the areas of Computer Science and Education among the fields of research with the highest number of articles. © 2024 The Author(s)

Air pollutant exposure has been shown to exacerbate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) manifestations, such as increased respiratory episodes and intermittent oxygen desaturation. However, most studies have focused on episode frequency rather than duration. This study investigated the associations between air pollution and OSA manifestations using both frequency-based indices and the duration-based marker lung-to-finger circulation time (LFCT). Polysomnography data from 820 individuals with suspected OSA (mild-to-moderate: n = 224; severe: n = 596) were analyzed. Sleep disorder indices included the apnea–hypopnea index (AHI), oxygen desaturation index (ODI), arousal index, and mean LFCT. A novel composite metric, respiratory event response time area (RERTA), defined as the square root of the product of LFCT and AHI, was introduced to evaluate the interplay between frequency and duration. Air pollutant exposure was estimated using data from monitoring stations within 4 km of the registered residences of the study cohort. Multivariable Poisson regression models were employed to assess short-term (1-month) and long-term (1-year) exposure effects. Short-term PM 2.5 and NO 2 exposure were significantly associated with increased AHI, ODI, arousal index, and reduced LFCT. Long-term exposure to PM 2.5 , PM 10 , and NO 2 was associated with increased AHI and ODI, while PM 2.5 and PM 10 were linked to reduced LFCT. Both short- and long-term O 3 exposure were associated with increased AHI and ODI. PM 2.5 and O 3 (short-term) were positively associated with RERTA. These findings suggest that air pollution exacerbates OSA by increasing episode frequency and accelerating compensatory responses, thereby elevating cardiopulmonary burden as reflected by RERTA.
