With the rapid social and economic development, a great deal of expenditure is crucial for the nation’s infrastructure development. Nevertheless, the governments of many developing nations have been experienced with the limited budget and technical inability to deliver effective public infrastructures. Public–private partnership (PPP) has been adopted as an alternative collaboration arrangement between the government and the private sector in many nations to overcome these challenges. PPP can be defined as a long-term contract between a public agency and a private entity for rendering public facilities, including design, construct, finance, operate, and manage the project. The PPP contract types can be classified by various factors. Different PPP options imply different levels of responsibility and risks to be assumed by the private operator. Deciding an appropriate PPP contact type is always a risk-taking task for the government. This decision-making depends upon several criteria, which directly contribute to project success. This paper proposes a multi-criteria decision-making model based on analytical network process (ANP). The proposed model can be employed to choose a PPP contract type that optimizes important criteria. The main input of the model is the priorities (weights) of the PPP contracts selection criteria, which are obtained from a series of questionnaire surveys. The article explored the development of a surface slope measurement system using 3D point cloud data. The floor slope condition is important for the residential building floor quality inspection. Insufficient slope can lead to surface deterioration and water pocket formation. Current slope measurement in floor quality inspection has problems: time-consuming because of the forming log for each elevation point to calculate, random area points are chosen to measure, and the result did not cover the whole floor area, the tools used in the conventional methods can produce the close result not the exact result for the floor area. The aim of the research is the developed a system that can be used as an assistant tool in floor slope inspection with 3D point cloud data so that the calculation can be applied to all areas of the floor. 3D point cloud data can be collected using a FARO 3D laser scanner and execution of the system from acquired data will be performed in MATLAB. The system produces the slope value of the inspected room as well as the direction of the slope to decide the correct direction of the drainage of the floor which is important to access the bathroom or balcony in the residential building. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Floors, walls, and ceilings in building construction projects are essential to inspect for checking the quality. The internal wall inspection mainly includes evaluation criteria, measuring techniques, and evaluation items. Traditionally, measuring the right angles between two walls has only been done visually or with a traditional ruler approach, which takes a lot of time. This paper applies point cloud technology to analyze the evaluation of the angles with the use of the MATLAB programming platform. In contrast to the conventional approach, the tools that are typically used to identify the angles include an L-squared ruler that is 30 and 50 cm long. Therefore, this research focus is on the comparison of angle measurement from the full point cloud and partial point cloud (strip model). This research was mainly conducted in two approaches. Firstly, to evaluate the angle between the walls and floors by using the MSAC algorithm with full plane model input and then the second approach automatically cuts the input model again into smaller sizes and then measures its angle. Then the full model and the cut model are compared to check the effect of the angle results depending on the plane size. This research also attempted to examine the distance effect on the laser scanner between the wall and the scanner for extended analysis. From the analysis result, the proposed conceptual framework can be used to check the angle values by automatically cutting the full plane model and their effect on the different distances. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Digital Twin (DT) is a virtual replica that mirrors physical objects, systems, or entities. In the construction sector, DTs play a crucial role in building management, optimizing energy usage, predicting maintenance, and enhancing building lifecycle management. Although effectively integrated into traditional construction practices, its application in the prefabricated construction (PC) field remains relatively limited. Despite its potential to transform the PC, a significant research gap exists in comprehensive literature addressing the approaches, challenges, and requirements specific to this field. This study aims to bridge this gap through a mixed-method research approach that includes bibliometric analysis and systematic review. Publications related to PC and DT are collected from the Scopus database, followed by bibliometric analysis to offer a quantitative insight into the current research trends, prolific authors, and geographical distribution. Furthermore, this study conducts a systematic review that qualitatively analyzes the objectives of DT applications in PC, explores its methodological approaches, identifies challenges and recommendations for practitioners and researchers, and suggests future needs. The findings highlight the pressing need for standardization, robust data management, and scalable solutions to navigate the complexities. Conclusively, this paper presents a comprehensive conceptual framework to facilitate the application of DT in various phases of PC. The critical limitation is the reliance on the publications on the Scopus database and its potential biases. Excluding the need to expand on more emergent publications, discussing empirical DT studies in PC to highlight interoperability and standardization needs is also required for future research. © 2024 ISARC. Building Information Modeling (BIM) has demonstrated a wide range of merits over traditional and modern constructions. The integration of generative design (GD) with BIM in the construction industry has become an interesting topic, even though the concept is not very new. Prefabricated construction (PC) offers several advantages over traditional construction and has recently advanced to a new level of study because of the usage of BIM. The synchronization of BIM with PC is becoming simpler to create automatic design solutions in its early phases, thanks to the current breakthroughs in the internet of things (IoT) and its applications. There has been an increase in research interests that are mostly focused on examining tools and applications. However, there are not many studies that have looked at methodological relationships and other factors, which has led researchers to focus more on GD-BIM-based investigations. This study provides a preliminary critical analysis of the software, skill, and methodological requirements for current GD-BIM integration methodologies. The publications are pulled from web of science platform and thoroughly examined in statistical and systematic methods to give a fresh viewpoint on objective-oriented and skill-driven GD-BIM development for PC. New guidance to improve skill learning for GD-BIM development is recommended in this study. The analysis and recommendations might aid the researchers and designers in comprehending the situation and paying attention to future requirements. © ISARC 2023. All rights reserved.

Ontology for Virtualization of Lean construction Games

Research Question: How can serious games for Lean construction courses, traditionally implemented in person, be efficiently virtualized for hybrid or online education? Purpose: This paper creates an ontology (a set of concepts and categories in a subject area or domain that shows their properties and the relations between them) for the methodical identification, sequencing, and implementation of universal elements of any serious game into a computer-based instructional environment. For validation we provide practical lessons from having implemented this approach on several Lean construction games in college courses. Research Design/Method: We assemble core elements, including ‘atoms’, from game design literature into an ontology. Each element is individually converted into virtual mode;often more than one possible way exists. Having placed them into an ontology ensures that the outcome will be a fully functional game, yet transferred to its new mode. We apply this virtualization approach to existing Lean construction games. Findings: We find that games even with substantial physical components and interactions can indeed be successfully virtualized, retaining their full educational experience. Limitations: While we have validated the ontology on several Lean games, it has not been tested for serious games in other areas, nor been used to inspire creating new ones. Implications: We hope that this research will facilitate the increased use of gamification in Lean construction and other courses, and may inspire further study of the underlying conceptual similarities of games and production processes. Adapting our approach can allow developing new serious games to convey knowledge about a specific topic. Value for practitioners: Gamification of higher education can be significantly advanced by the systematic, ontological identification of the main elements and relations needed to implement serious games. Clustering is an unsupervised learning method that provides insights by investigating unknown structures in a dataset without exploiting any ground truth target information. For constructing an as-built Building Information Models (BIM) from captured laser-scanned datasets, the segmentation process precedes modeling, which provides a baseline to be traced for obtaining 3D models from point clouds. For the segmentation process, a clustering algorithm can be effectively applied so that it can group the points having similar features without predefined criteria which, in turn, segments can be easily separated from the entire scene. Amongst various types of clustering algorithms, Hierarchical Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (HDBSCAN) was developed as a density-based and hierarchical clustering algorithm which provides a simplified tree of significant clusters. This algorithm has several distinct advantages over other clustering algorithms: (1) avoids "flat" (i.e. non-hierarchical) labeling of data objects, (2) automatically simplifies the hierarchy into the most significant clusters, and (3) requires a single input parameter (i.e. minimum number of points) for density threshold. However, this algorithm has an overall computation time complexity represented as a quadratic form (i.e., O (dn2) ) which suffers from the computational efficiency issue especially for massive amounts of data such as those found in 3D point clouds. To ease the applicability of HDBSCAN to Scan-to-BIM applications, this research aims to parallelize major time-consuming components of HDBSCAN algorithm. OpenMP interface was adopted for thread parallelization and parallel efficiency was measured by calculating speedup and efficiency from strong and weak scaling results. © 2023, Canadian Society for Civil engineering.

Perceptions and Pedagogical Responses of construction Educators During COVID-19

COVID-19 impacted academia across the globe. Given the scale and sudden pandemic onset, limited empirical studies identify the transition’s impact on the US construction educators and education imparted. The study determined the pedagogical responses of educators associated with construction programs within the US during COVID-19 and tested six relationships in the areas of university support, technological access and infrastructure, and educator proficiency improvements. An online survey method was utilized with the instrument emailed to nearly 1,883 educators associated with construction programs/departments across the US. The study used 163 complete responses from US educators based on predefined parameters and identified the baseline operational paradigm (pre-COVID) for construction educators and programs across the US. The study determined the changes after the transition and investigated the impacts of the transition on faculty proficiency with online teaching, existing technological infrastructure, and communication with students. The study identified a moderate relationship between the University’s level of support and educators’ experiences in developing and delivering online materials during the transition. A moderate relationship was also identified between proficiency with online content delivery and total teaching experience. Finally, only a few respondents felt construction education could be delivered entirely online, based on their experiences. © 2022 Associated Schools of construction.

A Pedagogical Framework for Enhancing the Entrepreneurial Leadership Mindsets of construction Students: A Pilot Study

Researchers and academics have recognized and reported the need for entrepreneurship education in the past two decades. However, limited attention has been paid to developing entrepreneurial leadership mind-sets in construction education. This study proposes and makes a case for a pedagogical framework to prepare students to be leaders driven to create successful businesses within the construction sectors. The framework considers the characteristic attributes of entrepreneurial vision, which could be reflected by various efforts that foster curiosity, make connections, and create value for others. Under the guide of this vision and considering the role of technology adoption in entrepreneurship, the pedagogical framework is building on the experiential learning theory, the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), and the technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework. The pedagogical framework was incorporated and examined as a term project in a construction course. After completing the project, an established instrument was applied to assess students’ entrepreneurial leadership mind-sets, and the overall positive results showed the effectiveness of the proposed pedagogical framework. This study aims to provide a framework for construction educators as a meta-curriculum to enhance the students’ entrepreneurial leadership mind-sets. © 2024 Associated Schools of construction.
