Addressing the social barriers to green stormwater infrastructure in residential areas from a socio-ecological perspective

Despite the well-recognized financial limitations, social aspects can also impact the adoption of green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) as it is ingrained in the socio-ecological system we live in. Thus, this work focuses on gaining an understanding of the public's perceptions of GSI by considering cognitive biases that hinder its adoption. This work is composed of two forms of human-subject studies, including an online-based survey and a series of semistructured interviews. The survey (n = 510) was conducted to gauge public opinions toward GSI, whereas the interviews with representatives of major local regulatory agencies were to learn about the logistics for GSI implementation in Mecklenburg County, NC. The results were interpreted using the theory of planned behavior of rational actors. Statistical results showed a weak interpretation through this theory to explain the survey participants' intention to adopt GSI measures. This could suggest that the incorporation of irrationality, such as cognitive biases, could further enhance the predictability of the theory. At the same time, an inconsistency between the findings from the survey and the interviews was identified: most survey participants showed an overall uniform positive attitude, intention, and behavior regarding GSI practice adoption, whereas the interviewed experts all suggested a wide diversity on such terms. Suggestions were made based on the findings for better policy-making on public engagement for local regulatory agencies. This research aims to help local stormwater management authorities explore shortcomings in current stakeholder engagement plans to gain sustainable support for GSI implementation in urbanized areas.

Many barriers obstruct green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) implementation, particularly in residential areas where it primarily relies on voluntary buy-in. Thus, it is necessary to determine the most effective mitigation strategies and raise attention to them. This paper considers cognitive biases in decision-making to quantitatively simulate their influence on GSI adoption behaviors in residential areas. The overall goal is to model the adoption of GSI measures in residential areas by incorporating the cognitive biases of residential-based adopters. The methods include agent-based modeling with the model framed by the theory of planned behavior. Data used in the model included survey data collected from participants who reside in the study area and values from the literature. The results show that cognitive biases, when both status quo and loss aversion biases are present, could significantly limit adoption, especially when the initial adopters are sparse. Overall, the main contribution of this work is to provide insights into how cognitive biases may impact long-term GSI implementation planning. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Most energy exchanges take place through the building skin. The skin characteristics play a decisive role in the extent of these exchanges, but they are somewhat more varied in the double skin façade (DSF). Among these characteristics, cavity segmentation has a noticeable effect on the implementation of the DSF in different directions during the hot and cold seasons. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of DSF segmentation in energy consumption and natural ventilation of high-rise buildings in hot and dry climates. This study used DesignBuilder software to study sixty-four segmentation component scenarios in an eight-story residential building in Isfahan, Iran. Moreover, a proposed hybrid model utilizing the hybridization of the Hunger Game Search and Gradient Boosting (HGS-GB) algorithm was employed to estimate energy consumption in various scenarios involving lighting, heating, cooling, and total scenarios. The available outcomes revealed that the HGS-GB model had a better performance in comparison with other individual models, such as Gradient Boosting (GB), Random Forest (RF), and K-nearest neighbors (KNN). The R2 values for lighting, heating, cooling, and total energy estimation were 0.9993, 0.9958, 0.9991, and 0.9922, respectively. The findings of this study suggest the significance of DSF segmentation in energy consumption and natural ventilation in high-rise buildings in hot and dry climates. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

This study attempted to investigate the removal of biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), ammonia-nitrogen (NH4-N), and total phosphorus (TP) from secondary treated domestic wastewater using algal photo-bioreactor. A semi-pilot plant was constructed and operated for 112 days under continuous flow conditions at Zenin wastewater treatment plant, Giza, Egypt (WWTP) which consists of an algal photo-bioreactor with an effective volume of 188 litters and a lamella settler. The removal of the studied parameters was studied at different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) and mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentrations. A continuous illumination of the photo-bioreactor was maintained using sunlight in the morning and incandescent lamps at night. The best overall organic and nutrients removal efficiency was recorded at HRT of 16.1 hours. Artificial neural network (ANN) with a structure of 3-10-1 was used to predict the BOD, COD, TSS, NH4-N, and TP removal efficiencies. It was revealed that the ANN model adequately predicted the studied parameters removal efficiencies with r2 greater than 90%. © 2019 American Institute of Chemical Engineers. All rights reserved.

In general, the process of building construction makes the inevitable wastes such as nails, formwork, steel and concrete. In order to reduce these wastes, parts of building have therefore been produced by using the manufacturing process. This process can improve construction process with minimum wastes and time of construction. However, the manufacturing process is not completely effective for building construction. There is also an additional cost for the transportation from manufactory to the construction site. For this reason, to set the exact time of the construction process, to avoid material waste and to effectively reduce the construction cost, all the production processes of manufacturing building should be started and ended at construction sites. This research has studied the Lean Manufacturing Process (LMP) and applied to the process of the construction which is called "the building with the on-site manufacturing process, BMP" to reduce instable human resource by machines which provides three advantages as follows: 1) the better quality, 2) minimum constructing cost and 3) minimum constructing period. © 2018 International Association of Lowland Technology. Prioritizing rural roads projects in north-eastern Thailand by analytical hierarchy process (AHP)

This paper presents the application of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) in rural roads prioritization. The paper exhibits the concept and process of the plan for rural road development and application of multiple criteria decision analysis using AHP for prioritizing rural roads on a rational basis. Rural road network was grouped on strategic issues and strategies of Department of Rural Roads. There are three main factors to be used as an indicator to assess the importance of routes of each type of road: Transport and Traffic engineering, Accessibility and Other. The result of criteria weights was determined by Expert Choice software according to the AHP model. The results of weight factor analysis can be divided into 2 groups: The Transportation and Traffic Engineering dominant road (Logistics, Traffic Reduction and Country's Border Road) and the Accessibility dominant road (Tourism and Rural Area Accessibility Road). This study will be able to prioritize rural roads and allocate limited budget for development in the future. The master plan obtained from AHP application shows that this plan is consistent, and links with the country strategic plan under the Department of Rural Roads year 2017-2026, which is a longterm plan (10 years), and the Strategic Plan Framework Development of Rural Roads year 2017 - 2020, which is a medium-term plan (4 years). The main goal of the Rural Roads Development Plan in the area is to develop a rural road network to connect the Development of National infrastructure and the Northeast Development Plan perfectly. © 2018 International Association of Lowland Technology. This paper presents the design of the new Thammapakon Pho Klang Nursing Home, Nakhon Ratchasima, as a modern model for Thai nursing homes. The nursing home is based on green-building, energy-saving and human-factors engineering principles and covers an area of 102,000 m2 (2,520 acres). The model includes the site design and the buildings of the nursing home, which conforms with green-building and energy-saving principles. The novel nursing home represents a practical approach to the optimization of building use and building resources in the areas of building utilization, water management, waste management, environmentally friendly materials selection, the effect of buildings on the health of building users and the environment, construction, operations, maintenance, and final demolition. The designed buildings include an office building, a hospital, a dormitory for the elderly, a canteen and a multipurpose building. The elderly’s facility design is based on universal design and human-factors engineering. Google’s SketchUp 8 program was used to design the layout of the buildings, the style and size of the openings around the buildings, the building envelope materials, and the position and types of vegetation around the building according to sun direction. It was determined that the overall thermal transmission values (OTTV) and the roof thermal transmission values (RTTV) of the designed buildings are within the prescribed energy-efficient building standard (OTTV 2 and RTTV 2). © 2018 International Association of Lowland Technology. Cooperative processes are critical in complex projects involving stakeholders from different branches. The need to coordinate tasks and exchange information between production line and factory planning are key challenges for industrial plant construction management. Inefficient collaboration leads to increased cost and time, low quality, reduced output, loss of competitiveness and income and unfavorable image. This paper presents root causes of collaborative problems between production line and factory planning. The study integrates lean project management principles and root cause analysis methodology. This methodology is applied in a qualitative case study that builds on project data from production line and factory planning work environments, including the results of brainstorming sessions, online-survey and comparative analysis of industrial plant planning projects using different levels of lean project management ICT. © ASCE 2014.

Sludge-fly ash geopolymer is a green material, which does not require cement as a cementitious binder. Sludge and fly ash (FA) are both by-products from Bang Khen water treatment plants and Mae Moh power plants, respectively. A liquid alkaline activator, L is a mixture of sodium silicate solution (Na2SiO3) and sodium hydroxide solution (NaOH). This article investigates the influence of compression energy (E) on the Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) of a novel sludge-fly ash geopolymer. The optimal liquid alkaline activator (L) content, sodium silicate solution to sodium hydroxide solution ratio (Na2SiO3/NaOH), heat temperature (T) and heat duration (D), providing the maximum UCS for each E is also investigated. Test results indicate that the optimal UFA ratio decreases as E increases. The optimal L/FA ratios for E = 592.5, 1346.6 and 2693.3 kJ/m3 are 1.5, 1.4 and 1.3, respectively. The Na2SiO3/NaOH ratio of 80:20 is considered as optimal for all E tested. The UCS of sludge-FA geopolymer at all E values tested increases with an increase of heat duration until a heat duration of 72 hours, after which the UCS becomes almost constant. The heat temperature accelerates the geopolymerization reaction and therefore enhances the strength. However, overheating results in micro-cracks in the samples due to the loss of moisture. As such, the optimal temperature is controlled by liquid content;the higher L/FA results in the lower optimal heat temperature. Since the optimal L/FA ratio decreases as E increases, the optimal T subsequently decreases with an increase in E;i.e., its values are 75, 85 and 95 °C for E = 2693.3, 1346.6 and 592.5 kJ/m3, respectively. The maximum UCS values of sludge-FA geopolymer at optimal ingredient and heat condition are 20, 18 and 16 MPa for E = 2693.3, 1346.6 and 592.5 kJ/m3, respectively, which meet the strength requirement of bearing masonry units as specified by the Thailand Industrial Standard (TIS).
