Pushes, falls, stampedes, and crushes are safety hazards that emerge from the collective motion of crowds, but might be avoided by better design and guidance. While pedestrian dynamics are now getting better understood on the whole, complex heterogeneous flows involving e.g. adult-child pairs, though widely found at e.g. crowded Chinese training schools, still defy the current understanding and capabilities of crowd simulation models. We substantially extend a recent agent-based model in which each agent’s choice of motion results from the minimization of a sum of intuitive contributions, in order to integrate adult-child pairs. This is achieved by adding a suitably defined pairing potential. The resulting model captures the relative positions of pair members in a quantitative fashion, as confirmed by small-scale controlled experiments, and also succeeds in describing collision avoidance between pairs. The model is used to simulate mixed adult-child flows at a T-junction and test the sensitivity to the design and pairing strategies. Simulation shows that making the post-confluence corridor wide enough is critical to avoid friction in the flow, and that tight hand-holding is advisable for safer evacuations (whereas more loosely bound pairs get split at high density) and, more marginally, more efficient egresses in normal conditions. Towards control of Autonomous Surface Vehicles in Rough Seas

This paper addresses the problem of controlling an Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV) in rough sea-states, with a view towards minimising wave-induced forces, whilst maintaining headway. This is a challenging control application since, and as is derived in the paper, the interaction between the vessel and the wave disturbance is nonlinear and coupled. This subsequently motivates the novel application of the Real Time Iteration Scheme (RTI) for Nonlinear Model Predictive control (NMPC) of the ASV. Analysis of the resulting control signal provides an important insight into the role of the wave encounter frequency. Specifically, by actuating at twice the average wave encounter frequency, the nonlinear controller is able to reduce the wave forces, compared to an open-loop controller that achieves the same average velocity.

This article aims to analyze and synthesize the principal barriers in the way of the implementation of the renewable energies through a literature review. After doing an bibliometric analysis ant selecting 48 articles that satisfied the choosing theme, 38 barriers were found, which were divided into 4 categories, them being: Economics, Technical e Technological, Political and Social. After a thorough analysis of each category, it was possible to observe that each barrier generates different impacts in each country, depending of their development and climatic conditions, and that all of them relate and impact each other, intensifying themselves and making the diffusion of these energies even more difficult. © 2020, The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

To investigate the difference in uptake pattern heterogeneity between fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) and fibroblast activation protein inhibitor (FAPI) PET/CT and the reproducibility of radiomics features with respect to different calculation methods of standardized uptake value (SUV). 210 patients with various tumors were involved. Among the extracted 497 radiomics features, there are only 20 features that exhibited an ICC difference of more than 0.25 between the two tracers when using different SUV calculation methods, revealing the similar influence of SUV calculation methods. In contrast, the ICC values for most texture features were generally lower (0.22-0.39) between FDG and FAPI PET images, indicating a large difference in uptake pattern heterogeneity between the two tracers. Our results demonstrated that the influence of SUV calculation methods on the reproducibility of FDG and FAPI PET features is similar. The uptake pattern heterogeneity characterized by radiomics features between FDG and FAPI PET images is significantly different.

Low-temperature thermal fluctuations offer an essential window in characterizing the true nature of a quantum state of matter, a quintessential example being Fermi liquid theory. Here, we examine the leading thermal fluctuation of the superfluid density across numerous families ranging from relatively conventional to highly unconventional superconductors (MgB2, bismuthates, doped buckyballs, heavy fermions, UTe2, doped SrTiO3, Chevrel clusters, intermetallics, organic superconductors, transition metal dichalcogenides, ruthenates, iron-pnictides, cuprates, and kagome metals). Amazingly, in all of them an unprecedented universal T3 depletion materializes in the low-temperature superfluid density, even in the believed-to-be-conventional MgB2. This reveals a new quantum superfluid state of matter and requires a necessary change of paradigm in describing modern superconductors. We demonstrate that such unorthodox yet generic behavior can be described by a strictly Galilean consistent theory of bosonic superfluidity hosting a long-lived ‘true condensate’. The operation of an online shop that sells goods from a certain range is considered. There is a service area that can be defined by a network in which nodes of potential consumers are located. The task is to maximize profits of the participating agents or minimize the cost function of these agents. Revenue can be increased by reducing shipping costs by designing economical customer diversions routes, and by increasing the number of customers by lowering the price and placing drop-off points convenient for customers to pick up the goods themselves. This paper deals with two practical problems. The first problem involves two agents: The first is the online shop itself, which will make the delivery and wants to minimise its shipping costs. The second agent is the customer who is waiting for delivery and wants to minimise waiting time. The second problem involves three agents: The first two agents are the same as in the first problem, and a third agent appears, advertising, who needs to choose the path in which the benefits of advertising are maximised. It is convenient to solve these problems with a decision tree, whose branches will correspond to customer diversions strategies, in a given period of time, and given that in the next period there is a change in demand due to the actions of economic agents (creating advertising, detouring customers past crowded places and others), diversions strategies should also be changed. © 2021 IEEE.

Non-Euclidean Contraction Theory for Robust Nonlinear Stability

We study necessary and sufficient conditions for contraction and incremental stability of dynamical systems with respect to non-Euclidean norms. First, we introduce weak pairings as a framework to study contractivity with respect to arbitrary norms, and characterize their properties. We introduce and study the sign and max pairings for the `1 and `∞ norms, respectively. Using weak pairings, we establish five equivalent characterizations for contraction, including the one-sided Lipschitz condition for the vector field as well as logarithmic norm and Demidovich conditions for the corresponding Jacobian. Third, we extend our contraction framework in two directions: we prove equivalences for contraction of continuous vector fields and we formalize the weaker notion of equilibrium contraction, which ensures exponential convergence to an equilibrium. Finally, as an application, we provide (i) incremental input-to-state stability and finite input-state gain properties for contracting systems, and (ii) a general theorem about the Lipschitz interconnection of contracting systems, whereby the Hurwitzness of a gain matrix implies the contractivity of the interconnected system. In this paper, an auxiliary-model method is proposed for calculating equivalent input seismic loads in research of ground motions. This method can be used to investigate the local effect of 3 D complex sites subjected to obliquely incident SV and P waves. Using this method, we build a fictitious auxiliary model along the normal direction of the boundary of the area of interest, with the model’s localized geological features remaining the same along a vector normal to this boundary. This model is divided into five independent auxiliary models, which are then dynamically analyzed to obtain the equivalent input seismic loads. Unlike traditional methods, in this new technique, the mechanical behavior of the auxiliary model can be nonlinear, and its geometry can be arbitrary. In addition, a detailed description of the steps to calculate the equivalent input seismic loads is given. Numerical examples of incident plane-wave propagation at uniform sites with local features validate the effectiveness of this method. It is also applicable to elastic and non-elastic problems.

Wearable bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) devices are becoming increasingly popular due to their portability and low power consumption. However, improving power efficiency remains a significant challenge. One proposed solution is to reduce the number of excitation frequencies in the stimulation signal. This study investigates how reducing the number of used frequencies affects bioimpedance spectroscopy performance through simulations using synthetic data derived from a Cole-Cole model incorporating a Constant Phase Element (CPE). Simulations were conducted at various noise levels to evaluate how noise impacts the relationship between frequency and impedance. The results indicate a correlation between the number of frequencies used in BIS and the accuracy of CPE parameter extraction. This is particularly evident for $\alpha$ parameters of 0.8 and higher. Conversely, lowering the $\alpha$ value increases errors, even when a higher number of frequencies is used.
