This paper is dealt with the fault detection problem for a class of network-based nonlinear systems with communication constraints and random missing measurements. The nonlinear plant is described by a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy time-delay model, it has multiple sensors and only one of them can access to the fault detection filter at each transmission instant. The measurement signal is missing randomly and the missing rate differs from one channel link to another. The goal is to design a fault detection filter such that, the estimation error between the residual and fault is minimized. By casting the addressed fault detection problem into an auxiliary H ∞ filtering problem of a stochastic switched fuzzy time-delay system, a sufficient condition for the existence of the desired fault detection filter is obtained. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed technique.

We report our experimental results on the structural and magnetic characteristics of nickel films electrodeposited on n-type (111) silicon substrates. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), magnetic force microscopy (MFM) and magnetic hysteresis loops, we indeed find a nominal thickness for transition from island to continuous film before which the magnetization of nanoparticles of Ni is represented by vortex states. The evidence of non-uniform ground states in Ni granules has been proofed by micromagnetic simulations. After the formation of a continuous film, stripe magnetic domains are formed with spontaneous in plane magnetization.

Hysteresis nonlinearity exists in many physical actuators and actuator failures seem inevitable in practice. However, there is still no result available to compensate for failures of hysteric actuators in the design of controllers based on adaptive approaches. In this paper, we address such a problem by considering controlling a class of unknown nonlinear systems with multiple hysteric actuators. Two schemes are presented to design control signals for these actuators. Both schemes can accommodate uncertain patterns, values and time of actuator failures, in addition to system parametric uncertainties. It is shown that the designed controllers can compensate for failure and hysteresis effects of the actuators in the sense that system stability and tracking performance are maintained no matter whether this is any actuator failure or not. © 2011 AACC American Automatic control Council.

The spatial uncertainties of tip positioning due to the nonlinearity of the PZT scanner and thermal drift hinder the further application of the AFM based nanomanipulation. This paper brings forward feature referenced tip localization enhanced by probability motion model to reduce the spatial uncertainties. An improved motion model is probabilistically built by incorporating the PI model, the creep model and the thermal drift model. For calibrating the accurate model parameters, the statistical experiments are designed and performed. Then the tip position is optimally estimated by combining with a local scan based feature sensing method. The simulation and corresponding experiments are performed to illustrate the validity and feasibility of the calibrated parameters and the algorithm. © 2011 IEEE.

Because the structure and function of a high-rise building is complex and the density of occupants in it is high, fire safety is still a worldwide difficult problem. Safety and timely evacuation is an important issue under fire in the high-rise buildings. Because it is impossible in fact to do experiments about fire safety evacuation in high-rise buildings, in this paper, a research framework based on the artificial system, computational experiments, and parallel excution (ACP) theory is proposed. First, an evacuation process is considered to compose of two stages including pre-evacuation stage and evacuation stage. Second, artifical men with recognition functions based agent technology is proposed. Finally, computational experiments are designed by using an orthogonal experiment table, and experiment procedure of pre-evacuation stage is given. The idea of systimatic research about the influence of fire control facilities to evacuation is also proposed.

This paper is concerned with the identification of multiple model process with transition using the output error (OE) method. Local multiple linear models with output error model structure are identified at fixed operating points first and then a global nonlinear model is approximated by interpolating the multiple linear models with exponential weighting functions. With all the obtained initial values of the system's parameters, nonlinear optimization strategy is implemented to find the optimal values of the parameters for both the local multiple models and their corresponding weighting functions. Finally a more accurate global model can be obtained. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated through simulation examples.

The paper contributes to the analysis of freeway traffic flow dynamics by set theoretic methods. First, the macroscopic, non-linear and second-order model of freeway traffic flow dynamics is transformed to an equivalent and quasi Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) representation by steady-state centering and state variable factorization. Second, a polytopic LPV model form is obtained from the quasi model reformulation. The latter polytopic LPV form is then used as a basis for the computation and analysis of disturbance invariant sets. This framework is able to characterize constrained sets of states which can be reached by pure ramp metering control input signals. Furthermore, these sets become invariant to other measured and unmeasured disturbance inputs. The application of disturbance invariant set theory provides an analytical tool for constrained freeway ramp metering describing the set of states being invariant under the system dynamics, measured disturbance and other physical constraints regardless to the value unmeasured disturbance signal. The proposed idea is fully based on the analysis of the (transformed) non-linear macroscopic system and aims at filling the gap between the traffic modeling and quantitative freeway ramp metering.

The single-phase induction machine (SPIM) has the advantage of being powered by a single-phase voltage source. The availability of this power allows it to be widely used: electric household appliances, portable machine tools... However, this type of machine has not yet taken its whole share from various works present until now, in comparison with the three-phase induction machine. With the object of contributing to the study of this machine, we propose in this article a new decoupling approach in the vector control block, based on the the Fuzzy Logic; in order to solve the problem of decreasing the rotor flux. Indeed, the vector control of single phase induction machine using conventional decoupling approaches has a remarkable decrease of rotor flux when the machine is powered by a real voltage source inverter (VSI). For three different decoupling approaches with two types of supply: perfect voltage source and real voltage source inverter; a comparative study through numerical simulations is presented. The simulation results show the feasibility and good performance obtained by the proposed approach.

Abstract In this paper, a two-stage method is proposed to solve the molten iron scheduling problem (MISP). Firstly, a 0-1 mixed-integer nonlinear programming model is established for special type of molten iron scheduling problem (STMISP). A method to solve mathematical model of STMISP is presented, which include assigning machine strategy of STMISP and determining mathematical model of eliminating machine conflicts. Secondly, on the basis of results of STMISP, a heuristic algorithm based on the rule of first come first serve (FCFS) principle is established to solve normal type of molten iron scheduling problem (NTMISP). The molten iron scheduling system with the two-stage method has been successfully applied to Shanghai Baosteel Company to realize quickly optimal molten iron scheduling. Application results show that the two-stage method is both effective and feasible.

Salmonella is the most important cause of bacterial food-borne disease outbreaks in the world. In this study, we have trained and validated artificial neural networks (ANNs) to predict the combined effect of Zataria multiflora essential oil (EO), pH, and temperature on the probability percentage of growth initiation (log P%) of Salmonella. Z. multiflora was collected in the Fars province of Iran. Lyophilized cultures of Salmonella typhimurium ATCC 25923 was used in this study. This design included four levels of EO (0. 0, 0. 015, 0. 03, and 0. 06%), three levels of pH (5. 5,6, and 7. 3), three storage temperatures (35, 25, and 15°C), and repeated observations (18 times) for growth in brain heart infusion broth for up to 43 days. We have designed a standard and the so-called feed-forward ANN, including four input neurons, eight neuron in hidden layer, and one output neuron to predict the combined effect of Z. multiflora EO, pH, and temperature on the probability percentage of growth initiation (log P%) of S. typhimurium. The mean and standard deviation of ANN and real outputs were -2. 9771 ± 2. 43 and -2. 9722 ± 2. 39, respectively. The mean differences (and 95% CIs) between the ANN and real outputs were 0. 0049 (0. 0009-0. 0089). Result showed better prediction compare to the previous study(R = 0. 998). © 2010 Springer-Verlag London Limited.
