Production automationsystems consist of many entities (like robots and shuttles) that interact in complex ways to provide the overall system functionality like product assembly. Multi-Agent systems (MAS) can simulate these system entities and their interactions to better understand the system behavior according to production strategies and system configuration, which are otherwise hard to determine before their (costly) implementation. A main challenge is to coordinate the groups of agents effectively to reach a common production goal, e. g., fast and robust delivery on customer orders for assembling a set of products. In this paper, we introduce the pattern-based extension of the MAS-based manufacturing agent simulation tool (MAST) to support the simulation and evaluation of business processes in an assembly workshop: a layered coordination and test framework has been implemented and evaluated in cooperation with industry partners. Domain experts found the coordination patterns usable and useful to elicit their knowledge. The test framework allowed exploring the effects of production strategies on the system 30 times faster than with a real-world hardware workshop.

This work studies the identification and control of circulation fluidized bed (CFB) boilers. The CFB boiler under investigation shows strong nonlinearity due to big changes of steam load. A linear parameter varying (LPV) model is used to represent the process dynamics and used in control. The steam flow is used as the working-point variable (scheduling variable) of LPV model. Multivariable plant tests were carried out and a LPV model and a linear model were identified. The identification results of the industrial CFB boiler show that the LPV model has much higher accuracy than the linear model. The simulation studies for the MPC control of the CFB boiler have been performed using both the LPV model and the linear model. The simulation results show that the MPC using the LPV model performs better than the MPC using the linear model.

In this paper, a novel model-free periodic adaptive ramp metering scheme is presented for a freeway traffic system, which can be formulated as a general MIMO nonlinear system. The proposed method is model-free in nature, and the control inputs and the pseudo Jacobi parameters are updated periodically in a pointwise manner over the entire period, by directly using the I/O data obtained in the preceding periods. The geometrical tracking performance is shown with rigorous analysis. The simulation results illustrate the validity of the proposed method.

This paper describes automatic evaluation of series-parallel (combined) powertrain models using optimization. The novelty with the approach is the possibility to work with non-transparent industrial vehicle models, hidden for intellectual property reasons. The contribution extends the functionality of a recently developed tool for parallel hybrids, with the ability to operate on combined powertrains. Given the user inputs, which include dynamic vehicle model and driving cycle, the tool first produces a simplified powertrain model in the form of static maps, before dynamic programming is used to find an optimal torque split that minimizes fuel consumption. The main use of the tool is to evaluate the potential of a powertrain configuration. The paper contains an illustration of the tool operation on a non-transparent industrial vehicle model. The only requirement on the model is to provide access to some general variables and that it has a torque split that can be fully controlled.
