The iM2DCT features high scalability and modularity, making it a key component in DC distribution networks. A critical challenge in controlling the iM2DCT is balancing the submodule (SM) capacitor voltages. However, the traditional methods cannot effectively balance the SMs' voltage under non-unity voltage conversion ratio scenarios. To facilitate the iM2 DCT's operation range with balanced SMs' voltage, this paper proposes a novel SM capacitor voltage balancing strategy by assigning the group signal pulses with the negative charge value in the descending order of SM voltage, followed by the distribution of phase-shift pulses with the positive charge value. The effectiveness and feasibility of this strategy are verified using a full-power MATLAB/Simulink model. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper investigates the performance of simultaneously transmitting and reflecting surface (STARS) assisted semi-grant-free non-orthogonal multiple access network with randomly distributed users. By deploying STARS, the transmit signals of grant-based user (GBU) and grant-free users (GFUs) can be exquisitely adjusted to reduce interference. We propose a maximum channel scheduling (MCS) protocol that allows a GFU to access GBU’s channel with the assistance of STARS. In particular, the impacts of perfect/imperfect successive interference cancellation (pSIC/ipSIC) on MCS protocol are taken into account. To characterize the performance of STARS aided MCS (STARS-MCS) network, we derive the expressions of outage probability for GBU and GFU with pSIC/ipSIC. By applying convolution theorem and Laplace transform, the asymptotic expressions of outage probability and diversity orders for GBU and GFU are attained. We further design a STARS-based power control (SPC) strategy to eliminate the outage probability error floor and improve the outage performance. Numerical results show that: 1) The performance of STARS-MCS outperforms the existing benchmarks in terms of outage probability and system throughput;2) The SPC strategy can effectively improve the performance of the STARS-MCS network and eliminate the outage probability error floor at high signal-to-noise ratios;and 3) By adjusting reflection and transmission coefficients of STARS, the outage performance of GBU and GFU can be greatly enhanced. © 2025 IEEE. Comparison of pulse rate variability from post-auricula and heart rate variability during different body states for healthy subjects

Heart rate variability (HRV) extracted from the electrocardiogram (ECG) is an essential indicator for assessing the autonomic nervous system in clinical. Some scholars have studied the feasibility of pulse rate variability (PRV) instead of HRV. However, there is little qualitative research in different body states. In this paper, the photoplethysmography (PPG) of postauricular and finger and the ECG of fifteen subjects were synchronously collected for comparative analysis. The eleven experiments were designed according to the daily living state, including the stationary state, limb movement state, and facial movement state. The substitutability of nine variables was investigated in the time, frequency, and nonlinearity domain by Passing Bablok regression and Bland Altman analysis. The results showed that the PPG of the finger was destroyed in the limb movement state. There were six variables of postauricular PRV, which showed a positive linear relationship and good agreement (p > 0.05, ratio (Formula presented.) 0.2) with HRV in all experiments. Our study suggests that the postauricular PPG could retain the necessary information of the pulse signal under the limb movement state and facial movement state. Therefore, postauricular PPG could be a better substitute for HRV, daily PPG detection, and mobile health than finger PPG. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Statistical Learning Theory for control: A Finite-Sample Perspective

Learning algorithms have become an integral component to modern engineering solutions. Examples range from self-driving cars and recommender systems to finance and even critical infrastructure, many of which are typically under the purview of control theory. While these algorithms have already shown tremendous promise in certain applications [1], there are considerable challenges, in particular, with respect to guaranteeing safety and gauging fundamental limits of operation. Thus, as we integrate tools from machine learning into our systems, we also require an integrated theoretical understanding of how they operate in the presence of dynamic and system-theoretic phenomena. Over the past few years, intense efforts toward this goal - an integrated theoretical understanding of learning, dynamics, and control - have been made. While much work remains to be done, a relatively clear and complete picture has begun to emerge for (fully observed) linear dynamical systems. These systems already allow for reasoning about concrete failure modes, thus helping to indicate a path forward. Moreover, while simple at a glance, these systems can be challenging to analyze. Recently, a host of methods from learning theory and high-dimensional statistics, not typically in the control-theoretic toolbox, have been introduced to our community. This tutorial survey serves as an introduction to these results for learning in the context of unknown linear dynamical systems (see 'Summary'). We review the current state of the art and emphasize which tools are needed to arrive at these results. Our focus is on characterizing the sample efficiency and fundamental limits of learning algorithms. Along the way, we also delineate a number of open problems. More concretely, this article is structured as follows. We begin by revisiting recent advances in the finite-sample analysis of system identification. Next, we discuss how these finite-sample bounds can be used downstream to give guaranteed performa

In this paper, we consider the problem of predicting unknown targets from data. We propose Online Residual Learning (ORL), a method that combines online adaptation with offline-trained predictions. At a lower level, we employ multiple offline predictions generated before or at the beginning of the prediction horizon. We augment every offline prediction by learning their respective residual error concerning the true target state online, using the recursive least squares algorithm. At a higher level, we treat the augmented lower-level predictors as experts, adopting the Prediction with Expert Advice framework. We utilize an adaptive softmax weighting scheme to form an aggregate prediction and provide guarantees for ORL in terms of regret. We employ ORL to boost performance in the setting of online pedestrian trajectory prediction. Based on data from the Stanford Drone Dataset, we show that ORL can demonstrate best-of-both-worlds performance. © 2024 IEEE.

Toxic/hazardous gas leaks seriously jeopardize public safety and the ecological environment, and how to utilize drones with on-board gas sensors to quickly detect gas plumes at an early stage of a gas leak and take timely measures can effectively prevent the expansion of the accident. Traditional plume finding methods have the disadvantages of poor targeting, long search times, and repeated exploration in some areas. In view of this, this paper proposes a method of plume finding with frontier-based planner, where a heuristic function is designed to select optimal observation points and thus plan path to search plume. Here an air-mass path model is constructed to estimate the region that would likely be observed by the UAV at a candidate observation site on the frontier, and the area of the unknown part in the region is considered as the environmental exploration gain. The change in flight direction and the distance traveled by the UAV are used as environmental exploration costs when it will fly from its current pose to the candidate observation site. Simulation results show that the proposed frontier-based exploration method for plume finding has good performance in odor source localization tasks in outdoor environments. © 2024 IEEE.
