This paper presents a new approach for fault detection and classification in transmission line using Decision Tree (DT). The DT based fault detection algorithm uses 1/4th cycle data of fault currents from fault inception, to generate the optimal decision tree for fault detection. Similarly, the DT based classification algorithm takes half cycle data from fault inception of three phase currents along with zero sequence current, and constructs the optimal decision tree for classifying all 10 types of shunt faults in the transmission line fault process. The algorithm is tested on simulated fault data with wide variations in operating parameters of the power system network. The results indicate that the proposed method can reliably detect and classify faults in transmission line within the sub-cycle time-frame while keeping the computational burden sufficiently low to make a real-time implementation feasible. © 2011 CRL Publishing Ltd.

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is a neurological disease that affects millions of individuals in the world. Majority of TLE patients suffer from refractory seizures. Determining abnormal/damaged regions of the brain that harbor seizure focus is a critical step towards treatment of TLE patients. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a non-invasive method that we use in this work to determine damaged regions of white matter in the brain. To this end, we apply two methods, voxel based morphometry (VBM) and fiber tracking. We use these methods along with two anisotropy maps (EAR and FA) extracted from the DTI data. We use DTI data of 31 subjects (12 normal subjects and 19 TLE patients) for testing and evaluation studies. The VBM method shows that TLE is associated with reduction of both of FA and EAR values in several regions within the temporal lobes. The tractography method shows abnormal diffusion characteristics in three fiber bundles (fornix, uncinate fasciculus, and cingulum). The results show that the EAR maps are less sensitive to noise than the FA maps and the EAR values change more than the FA values in TLE. ©2010 IEEE.

Trocars used in Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) are equipped with a sealing mechanism. During the motion of an instrument through a trocar, the sealing mechanism deforms itself. None of the friction models presented in the literature capture the macroscopical deformation of the seal mechanism. Therefore a specific hybrid model is developed to describe the movement of an instrument through a trocar. The only geometrical assumption of this model is the axial symmetry of the two bodies. It can thus be applied to all problems with the same symmetry. Two operating modes are distinguished, corresponding to the deformation of the sealing mechanism on the one hand, and to the sliding phase through the trocar on the other hand. The model is identified and validated using experimental data recorded on a dedicated test setup.

The paper deals with the control of a wind-driven doubly-fed induction generator. Two control strategies are studied, namely the torque control and power control. In each case, two control methodologies for both the rotor side converter (RSC) and the grid side converter (GSC) are presented. First, the classical control based on PI regulators is described. This method is compared to an optimal control approach, that is based on a state-space multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) model. Specifically for the RSC control, a linear MIMO model is obtained using nonlinear compensation. This allows the use of a single control system for all operating regions. The designed control systems are validated and compared through simulations. The obtained results show the better performance of the optimal control w.r.t. the classical control approach. Additionally, the use of a torque control strategy produces better performance than the power control strategy.

The aim of this study is to assess the functional connectivity from resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data. Spectral clustering algorithm was applied to the realistic and real fMRI data acquired from a resting healthy subject to find functionally connected brain regions. In order to make computation of the spectral decompositions of the entire brain volume feasible, the similarity matrix has been sparsified with the t-nearestneighbor approach. Realistic data were created to investigate the performance of the proposed algorithm and comparing it to the recently proposed spectral clustering algorithm with the Nystrom approximation and also with some well-known algorithms such as the Cross Correlation analysis (CCA) and the spatial Independent Component analysis (sICA). To enhance the performance of the methods, a variety of data pre and post processing steps, including data normalization, outlier removal, dimensionality reduction by using wavelet coefficients, estimation of number of clusters and optimal number of independent components (ICs). Results demonstrate the applicability of the proposed algorithm for functional connectivity analysis.

The problem of fault detection and isolation (FDI) in the current sensors of a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) in the presence of model uncertainty is discussed in this paper. The proposed residual generator is inspired by the structure of the classical generalized observer scheme (GOS). However, each observer in this scheme is replaced by a robust ℋ _ /ℋ ∞ fault detection filter (FDF) followed by a Kalman-like observer. The latter filters a specific frequency in the output generated by the ℋ _ /ℋ ∞ FDF. A multi-CUSUM (Cumulative Sum) algorithm is used as decision system. The approach is validated through simulations of a controlled DFIG.

Air trapping is an abnormal retention of air that occurs after expiration state in the lungs, observed in all types of bronchiolar and obstructive lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome. Air trapping is often incidentally diagnosed on computed tomography (CT) scanning but this method needs doctors so it is subjective and depends on their experience. In this paper, we present a novel method for evaluation of air trapping in the lungs for detection of COPD in CT images. The proposed method finds volumetric variations of the lungs from inspiration to expiration. To this end, trachea CT images at full inspiration and expiration are compared and the volumetric variations are used to classify the subjects. In the evaluated cases, the proposed method is able to estimate air trapping in the lungs from CT images without human intervention. This method may assist radiologists to measure and evaluate air trapping for detection of COPD as a computer aided diagnosis (CAD) system. © 2010 IEEE.

The paper addresses the problem of designing a robust fault detection filter (RFDF) for a class of nonlinear descriptor systems whose nonlinear term are globally Lipschitz and linear term described by a linear parameter varying (LPV) form. The influence of perturbations on the residuals is minimized using the H ∞ norm while the sensitivity performance is guaranteed using the H ∞ index. Based on the Lyapunov stability theory, the design problem is formulated as a convex optimization problem and solved via linear matrix inequality (LMI) techniques. Performances of the proposed filter are shown through the application to an activated sludge process model.
