An architecture description language based on dynamic description logics for self-healing systems

As biological systems exhibit adaptation, healing and robustness in the face of changing environmental behavior, this paradigm has actuated research dealing with the concept of self-healing systems, which attempt to heal themselves in the sense of recovering from malicious attacks and rectifying of system faults. The goal of self-healing systems is to provide survivable systems that require high dependability, robustness, adaptability, and availability. Such systems maintain one or more models, whether external or internal, at run time as a basis for identifying problems and resolving them. This article describes an architectural description language, called ADML, which is being developed as a new formal language and/or conceptual model for representing evolving software architectures. The ADML embraces dynamic change as a fundamental consideration, supports a broad class of adaptive changes at the architectural level, and offers a uniform way to represent and reason about both static and dynamic aspects of self-healing systems. Because the ADML is based on the Dynamic Description Logic DDL(SHON (D)), which can represent both dynamic semantics and static semantics under a unified logical framework, architectural ontology entailment for the ADML languages can be reduced to knowledge base satisfiability in DDL(SHON (D)), and dynamic description logic algorithms and implementations can be used to provide reasoning services for ADML. In this article, we present the syntax of ADML, explain its underlying semantics using the Dynamic Description Logic DDL(SHON (D)), and exemplify our approach by applying it to the domain of load balancing a wireless remote-access system;the preliminary results certify the potential of the approach.

This paper proposes a method to predict the effect of Bevacizumab therapy on Glioblastoma Multiform (GBM) tumors. The prediction is critical for effective treatment planning. The proposed method is developed and evaluated using Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) and post-contrast T1-weighted Magnetic Resonance Images (pc-T1-MRI) of 14 patients with GBM tumors gathered before and after the treatment. First, the proposed method calculates diffusion anisotropy indices (DAI) of all voxels in the brain. These diffusion anisotropy indices are Fractional Anisotropy (FA), Mean Diffusivity (MD), Relative Anisotropy (RA), and Volume Ratio (VR). Then, it registers post-treatment pc-T1-MRI and pre-treatment DAI maps to pre-treatment pc-T1-MRI. Next, it uses a thresholding method to segment the tumor from pc-T1-MRI studies. Comparing Gd-enhanced voxels of the pre- and post-treatment pc-T1-MRI, the DAIs of the tumor are labeled based on their response to the treatment. The voxels of 7 patients are randomly selected to train 4 classifiers (ANN, SVM, KNN, and ANFIS) and then all voxels of the other 7 patients are used to test them. For each classifier, four performance measures (sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and accuracy) are calculated. Experimental results show that the ANFIS is more accurate than the other classifiers in predicting the treatment response.

Detection of gear cracks from vibration data is a difficult task. This paper investigates an alternative to the linear predictor residual fault detection based on the nonlinear adaptive control system concept of frequency estimators. The frequency estimator model takes advantage of the sinusoidal nature of vibration and adapts the system model during operation. The low-computational requirements, no-priori knowledge, sinusoidal-based prediction, and on-line model adaption makes this model ideal for on-line gear crack fault detection. Performance is evaluated through both synthetic and experimental data while comparing to the autoregressive linear predictor model. © 2011 AACC American Automatic control Council.

In this paper, genetic algorithm and modified dynamic programming are applied to path planning of robotic fish for the first time. Using grid method to the environment modeling and applying genetic algorithm to the path planning, an optimal or sub-optimal robot path can be obtained. Since the robotic fish can't track linear motion, the robot path can be seen as several circular arc. Based on the optimal path obtained via genetic algorithm, modified dynamic programming algorithm is proposed to calculate the shortest circular arc path, fish velocity and direction in every step. Finally the experiment on the robotic fish control software shows the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2011 Intl Journal of Adv Mechatr.

Meshes of points over the unit disk were found some years ago that ensure the discrete orthogonality of the Zernike functions. These meshes are referred in the paper as generic Zernike meshes. Presently, however, the corneal surface points are measured, e.g., with reflection-based corneal topographers, and computed, with their respective built-in surface(-point) reconstruction programs, at other, that is, non-generic Zernike meshes. In the present paper, the corneal surface points measured over conventional non-generic Zernike meshes are converted - via cubic spline-interpolation and appropriate re-sampling - to surface points over generic Zernike meshes. With these spatial points as input points, discrete Zernike transformation is carried out. The resulting Zernike coefficients are then used to geometrically reconstruct the optically smooth corneal surface. In the work reported herein, generic Zernike meshes of different cardinalities were used and the resulting surface representations were evaluated. Then, the error-surfaces were compared to the ones resulting from the Zernike-based reconstructions of a cornea-like mathematical surface that had been properly fitted to the input data. © 2011 IEEE.

We present a fast collision detection method for deformable surfaces with parallel spatial hashing on GPU architecture. The efficient update and access of the uniform grid are exploited to accelerate the performance in our method. To deal with the inflexible memory system, which makes the building of stream data a challenging task on GPU, we propose to subdivide the whole workload into irregular segments and design an efficient evaluation algorithm, which employs parallel scan and stream compaction, to build the stream data in parallel. The load balancing is a key aspect that needs to be considered in the SIMD parallelism. We break the heavy and irregular collision computation down into lightweight part and heavyweight part, ensuring the later perfectly run in load balancing manner with each concurrent thread processes just a single collision. In practice, our approach can perform collision detection in tens of milliseconds on a PC with NVIDIAGTX 260 graphics card on benchmarks composed of millions of triangles. The results highlight our speedups over prior CPU-based and GPU-based algorithms. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper examines robust partially mode delay dependent H ∞ output feedback controller design for discrete-time systems with random communication delays. A finite state Markov chain with partially known transition probabilities is used to model random communication delays between sensors and controller. Based on Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, a novel methodology for designing a partially mode delay-dependent output feedback controller is proposed. Using cone complementarity linearization algorithm bilinear matrix inequalities (BMIs) are solved to obtain the controller gains. We also show that the results for completely known transition probabilities and completely unknown transition probabilities can be derived as special cases of our result. The effectiveness of the proposed design methodology is demonstrated by a numerical example. To the best of authors' knowledge, the problem of designing an output feedback controller for a partially known transition probability has not been fully investigated. © 2011 AACC American Automatic control Council.

A passive image steganalysis method is proposed to universally detect spatial-domain steganography schemes. It is shown to have better performance than universal steganalyzers known to be powerful in spatial domain, including the WFLogSv and the WAM methods. This level of accuracy is the result of improving the WFLogSv steganalyzer by considering a more comprehensive relationship between the singular values of each image block and the linear correlation of the rows and the columns. That is, instead of the closeness of the lower singular values to zero, the energy distribution of the singular values is investigated. An innovative measure is proposed for this investigation, which is inspired from arithmetic mean-geometric mean inequality. Experimental results confirm the supremacy of the proposed steganalysis scheme over its counterparts.

A passive universal image steganalysis method is proposed that is shown to be of higher detection accuracy than existing truly blind steganalysis methods including Farid's and the WAM. This is achieved by improving some weaknesses of Farid's steganalysis scheme in feature extraction, that is, instead of deriving an over-determined equation system for each sub band of the wavelet decomposition, the sub bands are divided into overlapping blocks and an over-determined equation system is constructed for each block. To guarantee the existence of finite answers, the over-determined equation systems are solved in a way different from Farid's by using Moore-Penrose pseudo-inverse concept. Further improvement to the performance is achieved by adding diagonal directions and increasing the number of moments. The comparative evaluations confirm the superiority of the proposed method over prevalent blind steganalysis schemes. © 2011 IEEE.
