Fingerprint compression using contourlet transform and self organizing feature map

This paper presents a new coding technique for fingerprint compression, which is based on contourlet transform and Self-Organizing Feature Map (SOFM) vector quantization. One of the main difficulties in developing compression algorithms for fingerprints resides in the need for preserving the minutiae, which are subsequently used in identification. Wavelets have shown their ability in representing natural images that contain smooth areas separated with edges. However, wavelets cannot efficiently represent the ridge and furrow patterns, which are predominant in fingerprints. This issue is addressed by directional transforms, known as contourlets, which have the property of preserving edges. SOFM based vector quantizer quantizes the coefficients obtained by contourlet transform. The results obtained are tabulated and compared with those of the wavelet based ones. © 2007 JD.

A novel continuous perception garment classification mechanism is proposed in this paper, with the aim to identify the correct category of the garment from a set of known categories. It has been observed that due to the severe folding and overlapped texture of garments, treating a video of the continuous deformation of cloth as a set of disordered static figures would be ineffective which leads to low classification precision performed by an image-based garment classifier. In contrast, a high-level decision making module that leverages the classification results of each single image would significantly increase the algorithm performance. In this paper, we incorporate the optical flow variation of deformable cloth between consecutive configurations as a representative of how it is traversing within the confidence interval of the image-based classifier. We claim that it is not the number of video frames but the sum of optical flow variation of the garment configuration between consecutive frames having the same category label that constitutes the belief of garment classification. In other words, if two consecutive visual appearances of the garment could be identified as the same category by the image-based classifier, then the more diverged that two configurations are, the more confident that the garment is correctly identified. Experimental comparisons between the state-of-the-art algorithm and the proposed algorithm in a public dataset have been provided which prove the validity of the proposed algorithm. © 2022 IEEE.

Islanding phenomenon is one of the major concerns in the distributed generator (DG) systems. Islanding occurs when one or more DGs supplied local loads without connecting to the grid utility. This unintentional condition must be detected with the minimum time possible to prevent the hazardous effects to a person worked in the system or equipment connected to the network. The two main methods of anti-islanding are passive and active methods. The passive methods are excellent in the speed of detection and power quality. However, the passive have relatively large non-detection zone (NDZ). On the other hands, the active methods have less relatively small NDZ and still provide a good speed of detection. This paper proposes an anti-islanding technique for multiple grid-connected inverters in photovoltaic (PV) system based on an active method. By injecting harmonic currents with the same or different harmonic orders and monitoring the change at the point of common coupling (PCC), the islanding condition can be diagnosed. Due to its excellent algorithm looking at specific frequencies, the Goertzel algorithm is employed in this paper to identify frequency components. Simulation results using PSIM software confirm the effectiveness to the technique in accordance with the requirements of the interconnection standards, IEEE Std. 1547 and IEEE Std. 929–2000.

The approach to development methods which are described in paper allows possibility extension for minimizing costs and widely external hardware industrial control systems utilization. There is described development method of control applications by industrial WinPLC/WinPAC and REX control compiler in comparison to classical development methods that need expensive RT measurement cards and produce only one purpose development solution. The project is based on specification of development process of designed control schemas of prepared applications to an industrial utilization by direct connection and implementation to the chosen control system WinPLC/WinPAC. Paper deals with a way how to produce a solution for control applications that are prepared, designed and implemented in MATLAB-Simulink to the target platform. The multiplatform control system REX is used as a bridge between MATLAB and target platform.

This paper presents the development of inspection system using ultrasonic for steel plate manufacturing. Generally, internal defects in the final product of steel plate are inspected manually by human operators, which is a time consuming process. In this research, the crystal of an ultrasonic probe at natural frequency suitable for steel plate examination was developed. In our design, high sensitivity (i.e. high signal peak amplitude) and good resolution were achieved using a (water coupling) probe structure, without ceramic wear plate, and a signal processing called the 1-bit technique. Backing material of the probe was carefully designed and experimented to obtain proper impedance matching with the probe's crystal by varying its material composition. Jig with a dual-probe support to speed up the inspection of a steel plate was implemented. Moreover, the 1-bit technique was applied to improve resolution of the inspection and to detect small flaws close to the far surface of the steel plate. The developed probe has more sensitivity than that of commercial probes in terms of frequency response. The 1-bit processing technique has been realized and simulated and it showed advantages over the conventional method for processing time and accuracy.

Recently, speed and current controller have been developed for interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM). Each method has its own advantage and limitation. However, in the commercial drive system, the controller should be easy to set up and tune in particular for operator, therefore the classical proportional plus integral (PI) controller has widely used due to its simple structure while achieving zero steady-state error. However finding out the parameters of the controller is not any easy task because of complex dynamics of IPMSM. For this reason, this paper presents a novel automated design employed genetic algorithm (GA) to optimize PI speed and current controller of IPMSM. The drive control system is designed on the basis of vector control scheme incorporated with the maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) control strategy to improve the drive performance. Simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper proposes the combining of μ-synthesis robust repetitive control and feedforward control scheme to the design of constant sinusoidal voltage tracking for a stand-alone three-phase constant voltage inverter. The controller designed problem is defined in the form of two-degree-of-freedom feedback-feedforward controller. The D-K iterative algorithm is used to solve for both parts of the controller in one procedure to get the optimal controller. The proposed control scheme inherits the advantage of the robust repetitive control but does better in tracking performance. Simulation studies of the system were carried out using Matlab/SIMULINK to verify the effectiveness of the controller. The results show that the proposed control scheme outperforms the previous works under the scenario cases.

This paper presents object detection and modeling algorithm for automatic visual people counting system to identify individuals from top view images acquired from an overhead surveillance camera. This work proposes Snake algorithm with effective external energy function and a half-circle template initialization for modeling passengers. The experiment result showed that the proposed method could fit the Snake to the head and shoulder boundaries of the passengers effectively. Fitting error of 3.76 pixels per control point was obtained in our experiment. The information is not only useful for verifying humans but also for extracting appearance features to enhance performance of the subsequent tracking algorithm.

Cyber-physical system (CPS) is integrated between the virtual and physical worlds that uses service-oriented architecture (SOA) to manage service objects such as production, quality control, and maintenance engineering. Moreover, the CPS will be more effective by using the predictive ability to integrate some service object of CPS. This paper presents an intelligence function on the top CPS platform which will be the prediction of production performance to detect yield malfunction by using affect parameter with a starch yield of each production units such as production rate, starch content, loss in the process, a temperature of the flash dryer, and moisture content of starch for adjust the production process before an actual failure situation. The prediction model uses historian data from the factory with data from a mass balance model simulation and uses a Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) processing to get the yield predicted results to indicate the trend of change in yield or irregularities that may occur, which will be the information for the design or modification of the production plan or control the production to be appropriate before abnormalities in real situations. This model has an average accuracy of 90.55% of test dataset which is predicted 1 day in advance.
