In this paper, we propose a new vision-based defect inspection system for the surface of hot slabs. To minimize the influence of self-emission from slab surfaces with high temperature, an optic method based on blue LED light and a blue pass filter is proposed. Because the slab surface is partially covered with scales, which are unavoidable oxidized substances caused during manufacturing, it is difficult to distinguish between vertical cracks and scale. In order to resolve this problem and to improve the detection performance, the use of a Gabor filter and dynamic programming are proposed. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is shown by means of experiments conducted on images of hot slabs that were obtained from an actual slab production line. © ICROS 2016.

We present an adaptive brake warning system in order to help a driver keep a safe distance from the cars in front to avoid rear-end collisions. The safe distance continuously varies according to the carpsilas velocity, driving events, and road conditions. Three sensors, an ECU reader, a camera, and a laser range finder, are used to collect the vehicular velocity, the density of cars on the road and the following distance respectively. These data are sent to a main computer to calculate the level of critical situation where the driver needs to apply brake ranging from 0 to 4 where level 0 is the safest and level 4 means the most dangerous. Two decision algorithms: adaptive threshold and fuzzy inference system are compared. The results from real driving situations indicated that both methods can achieve an accuracy of 76.98% and 65.46% respectively.

A 500-N deadweight force standard machine(DWM) has been developed for calibrating force proving instrument of small force ranges at National Institute of Metrology, Thailand(NIMT). The DWM is able to generate calibration forces ranging from 2 N to 500 N with the relative expanded uncertainty of 5×10-5. This machine can be divided into six calibration ranges, which are 10 N, 20 N, 50 N, 100 N, 200 N and 500 N. To verify performance of the machine, this paper shows the evaluation of relative uncertainty in the range of 50 N to 500 N. The force transducer was calibrated by the machine according to ISO376:2011[1]. The calibration result of force transducers has shown repeatability and reproducibility. The relative deviation of the calibration errors were less than 5×10-5 at the 50 % to 100 % of the capacity of force transducer.

This paper presents a method for automatic segmentation of blood vessels in retinal images. The method is based on vessel tracking technique. The key idea of the method is that first a set of seed points (center of vessel cross sections) is extracted. Then, the seed points are connected to establish the vessel skeleton. Finally, the false vessel point are rejected by resorting to a hypothesis-verificaton based procedure. The major contribution of this work is that we formulate the step of seed point connection in the form of graph-theoretical shortest path problem. Then we apply the Dijkstra's algorithm to solve the problem. The performance of our method evaluated on the publicly available DRIVE database shows promising results.

Safety analysis for a nuclear power plant establishes not only an analytical limit in terms of a measured or calculated variable but also an analytical response time required to complete protective action after the analytical limit is reached. If the two constraints are met, the safety limit selected to maintain the integrity of physical barriers used for preventing uncontrolled radioactivity release will not be exceeded during anticipated operational occurrences and postulated accidents. Setpoint determination methodologies have been actively developed to ensure that protective action is initiated before the process conditions reach the analytical limit. However, regarding the analytical response time for the plant protection system (PPS), an integrated evaluation methodology considering the whole design process has not been systematically studied. In order to assure the safety of nuclear power plants, this paper proposes a systematic and integrated response time evaluation methodology that covers safety analyses, system designs, response time analyses, and response time tests. This methodology is applied to the PPS for the advanced power reactor 1400 nuclear power plant in Korea. The quantitative evaluation results are provided herein. The evaluation results using the proposed methodology demonstrate that the PPS completely satisfies the requirement of the analytical response time.

The failure of the INS will directly lead to navigation errors in an INS/GNSS integrated system. This paper presents an INS fault detection and diagnosis method using state Chi-square test (SCST)and optimized genetic algorithm and Back-Propagation neural network(GA-BP). Firstly, SCST is used to detect fault and the results of SCST is extracted as the feature data of fault diagnosis. Secondly, the selection strategy and calculation method of crossover and mutation probability are optimized to improve the performance of genetic algorithm. Then the optimized genetic algorithm is used for global search to optimally acquire the initial weight and the threshold of the BP neural network. Finally, two optimized GA-BP neural networks are applied to locate the fault and obtain the magnitude and type. The results of the simulation demonstrate that the method is able to diagnose the fault location, magnitude and type with high accuracy. © 2022, The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

The paper proposes a new topology for photovoltaic dc/dc converter with high efficiency under wide input voltage range is proposed. Photovoltaic dc/dc is a very crucial part of power conditioning system(PCS). Considering that output characteristic of photovoltaic cell has wide voltage range, depending on the operating conditions of photovoltaic cell, the dc/dc converter also needs to have wide input voltage range to regulate the constant output voltage. In addition, a high rated voltage of power switch(MOSFET) for dc/dc converter is necessary in order to be compatible with the high maximum output voltage of photovoltaic cell's maximum output voltage. Also photovoltaic power conditioning system should have a high efficiency under operation condition. To satisfy PV PCS condition series connected non-isolated dc/dc converter topology is proposed. This paper examines the proposed topology employing four modules and shows that it dramatically enhances the energy efficiency from low load to high load condition by reducing the required power level for dc/dc converter by one-third of conventional dc/dc converter. A case of 25kW prototype as the PV dc/dc converter is introduced to experimentally verify the proposed topology. © 2008 IEEE.

Factory waste includes the incomplete combustion of industrial fuels that causes carbon to precipitate in vents. These carbons might be put to good use. Therefore, the impact of using waste carbon in factories to produce electricity is investigated in this study by evaluating electrical characteristics: the type of electrode material's suitability, the size of the electrode's carbon contact surface area, and the distance between the electrodes. According to the findings, the maximum open circuit voltage (Voc) was 1.09 V for copper (+) and zinc (-) electrode materials, 1.11 V for the electrode's carbon contact surface area, and 1.29 V for the electrodes' spacing. The maximum of Voc was 1.11 V, maximum on-load voltage and current were 0.64V, 124.65 mA for optimum electrode carbon contact surface size 40 cm2. Optimum electrode distance at 2 cm that maximum open circuit voltage (Voc) was 1.29 V. The maximum load voltage and current were 0.77V, 128.32mA. Factory waste carbon can be useful in some applications for producing electricity from waste carbon and assisting in the reduction of factory waste. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents a road traffic estimation method using a GSM mobile phone as a probe. The technique relies on localization by signal strength matching. Our emphasis is on the unusual-large size of the database. We built a module that automatically collects location-signal with one second refresh rate and carried it along a test route to collect database. To handle big database, we additionally present a noise reduction algorithm, which eliminates bad data and compacts the database. For the localization algorithm, the fast nearest neighbor strategy is applied in the database matching to reduce computation time. The position estimations which formerly implemented noise reduction are compared with the ordinary results. Furthermore, we compared the computation time of the fast nearest neighbor algorithm to the normal method. The results show that the mobile phone positioning based on signal strength pattern matching can locate its location down to 63 meter accuracy. © 2009 IEEE.

This paper discusses signal transmission in the grounding system. During online partial discharge (PD) measurement for the high voltage (HV) apparatus, various PD pulse currents recharge the dielectric of HV apparatus when a PD occurs. One of the noise typologies that affects PD patterns is called the cross-talk, that is, discharges that appear in the measured point due to coupling from another point. In order to study the cross-talk signal, the two PD measuring circuits which are circuit no.1 and circuit no.2, on the same grounding system in the HV laboratory were performed. The distance between two PD measuring circuits is about 20 meters. The artificial PD models were utilized to generate the PD signal injecting to the test circuit no.1, while the cross-talk signals were investigated in circuit no.2. The HFCT sensors were used to measure the PD signal in circuit 1 and the cross-talk signal in circuit 2. The measurement results found that the cross-talk signal transmission in grounding systems provides a bipolar PRPD pattern, and the pulse waveform shows an oscillation shape. Moreover, onsite PD measurements of the generator steam turbine were studied. It is noticeable that the knowledge about cross-talk phenomena in grounding systems can help the PD verification and location for online PD measurement. © 2022 IEEE.
