A variable structure model of neurons’ application in computer vision

The neuron doctrine defines the neuron as the basic unit of the nervous system, which drives the dynamic behavior of our organs. This has led to neurons becoming the focus of modern neuroscience research and to the rise of neurocomputing, in which we try to digitally simulate human behavior. The goal being to better understand the human nervous system and gain more control over neuron-related diseases, helping doctors establish faster and more reliable medical diagnoses. In this context, we aim to simulate eye diseases and vision problems by convolving input images using a new class of neural networks based on a variable structure model of neurons presented in [1]. In this work, we focus on recreating the common convolution filters as a first step. This is the first time in neurocomputing literature that dendritic neurons have been used for dynamic convolution kernels generation and eye diseases simulation. We start with a presentation of our upgrades to the model’s flexibility and accuracy. Then, we propose a novel kernel generator algorithm to convolve the input images. Finally, we show its promising results in creating the outline, pixelization, and night convolution kernels, as well as control some metrics, including brightness and data retention. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

As distributed learning applications like Federated Learning, the Internet of Things (IoT), and Edge Computing expand, addressing their limitations becomes crucial. We approach decentralized learning across a network of communicating clients or nodes, focusing on two primary challenges: data heterogeneity and adversarial robustness. To address these, we introduce a decentralized minimax optimization method incorporating two key components: local updates and gradient tracking. Minimax optimization serves as a fundamental tool for adversarial training, ensuring robustness. Local updates are vital in Federated Learning (FL) to alleviate the communication bottleneck, while gradient tracking is necessary to demonstrate convergence amid data heterogeneity. Our analysis of the proposed algorithm, Dec-Fed Track, in nonconvex-strongly-concave minimax optimization demonstrates its convergence to a stationary point. Additionally, numerical experiments support our theoretical results. © 2024 IEEE.

This study addresses the affine formation maneuver control of cooperative multi-agent systems (MAS) having periodic inter-agent communication for both static and dynamic leader cases. Here, we focus on the leader-follower MASs. The primary aim of the control system is to steer the entire collection of agents to produce required patterns (geometric) along with any required maneuver through the direct control of only few a selected agents referred to as leaders. Most of the existing works are constrained to either the individual agents communicate with each other in continuous-time or the sample-data scenario where the leaders are stationary or have constant acceleration or velocities. Here, we consider the scenarios where the velocities of the leaders can be time-varying or constant. Here, different cases are addressed and some control laws are proposed. Conditions are established to help guarantee the overall stability of the systems. A simulation study is employed for the illustration of our proposed laws. © 2024 IEEE.

Abnormal climates due to global warming have emerged as a big concern in the global community. To mitigate climate change and achieve sustainability, distributed energy resources (DERs), including solar and wind, have been recently deployed in power systems. As the penetration level of DERs has increased, however, it caused a multitude of issues in the power systems, such as voltage fluctuation in the distribution network limiting renewable hosting capacity. On the other hand, the electric vehicle (EV) industry is rapidly growing to facilitate the transition to a carbon-neutral community, illuminating the potential of EVs as a flexible grid asset to mitigate some of the issues and improve grid operation, if properly exploited. To explore the potential of EVs, this paper proposes an EV scheduling strategy. By using an optimal EV charging scheduling proposed, distribution system operators (DSOs) can minimize their operating costs and stably operate the system with a high level of DERs. To validate the method, a modified IEEE 33-bus system with DERs is developed. The case study shows the proposed scheduling strategizes EV charging to reduce the cost of PV curtailment. In the study, the method outperforms the renewable-only case with curtailment by 4.97% in DSO cost. It also demonstrates its potential to increase the renewable hosting capacity by harmonizing EV charging with renewables. © 2023 The Korean Institute of Power Electronics.

Cryptoprocessors play a pivotal role in enhancing the security of modern computing systems by accelerating cryptographic operations and fortifying data protection. This survey delves into the world of cryptoprocessors, encompassing their historical development, architectural features, and various types based on their applications. The paper explores the crucial security considerations surrounding cryptoprocessors, covering both physical and logical aspects, as well as potential threats and countermeasures. Furthermore, the survey navigates through the latest technological trends and advancements in cryptoprocessor design. This includes discussions on post-quantum cryptography, secure enclaves, and mitigating side-channel attacks, all of which are shaping the future of cryptoprocessors. Real-world use cases and applications in domains such as secure communications, the Internet of Things (IoT), and data centers are presented, showcasing the practical significance of cryptoprocessors. However, the paper also highlights the persistent challenges faced by cryptoprocessor designers and provides insights into future research directions aimed at addressing emerging security and performance issues. This article supplies a proposed approach Neuro Fuzzy controller (NFC)-Adaptive Backstepping controller (ABC)-Space Vector Modulation (SVM) for a five-level NPC inverter-Double Stator Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (DSIPMSM). This paper's primary objective is to enhance DSIPMSM's performance by the use of strong control using the proposed approach. Given its benefits - including high torque density, high efficiency, high power density, and minimal maintenance - DSIPMSM, have recently been the focus of much research. Using the input-output linearization approach and Lyapunov stability theory, asymptotically stable trajectory-following dynamics are demonstrated using nonlinear adaptive backstepping control. The use of fuzzy logic and intelligence-based controllers are increasingly being used to enhance traditional control's performance and output. In addition, the fuzzy logic controller has a lot of flaws that are presently being fixed by the extremely effective NFC tool. The proposed method's worth was demonstrated by the simulation results in terms of durability, effective tracking dynamics, precision, and good disturbance rejection with little ripple. © 2024 IEEE.

Multiple autonomous vehicles (MAVs) enhance efficiency and task execution compared to a single vehicle. Real-world applications necessitate MAVs to safely navigate in dynamic formation along planned trajectories, while sensing, mapping, and avoiding obstacles. Addressing the need for trajectory adaptation amidst real-world scenarios, a safety-aware bio-inspired framework is proposed in this article. Our approach employs a chaotic gravitational search algorithm (CGSA) for global trajectory generation in a predefined formation. A quadtree-driven variable resolution (QVR) algorithm using monocular cameras provides occupancy grid maps (OGMs) at different resolutions. A formation control with target tracking minimizes a potential function for MAVs to follow the CGSA trajectory. Additionally, a bio-inspired neural network (BNN) local navigator coupled with dynamic moving windows (DMW) advances obstacle avoidance and refines safe trajectories using QVR and OGMs. Simulation and comparative studies validate the framework's robustness and effectiveness for MAVs. © 2020 IEEE.

In this study, operational strategies are investigated for an air-based photovoltaic-thermal (PV-T) system integrated with a domestic air-to-water heat pump. The PV-T system is used to simultaneously generate electricity and heat ambient air, which serves as the heat source for the heat pump. By utilising a variable-speed fan to regulate airflow, the PV-T system outlet temperature is adjusted, and the focus is on how different outlet temperatures impact the PVT system electrical and thermal efficiency, heat pump performance, and overall electricity requirements for heating. The performance of the integrated system is assessed for a case study of a household application in north Italy. The optimal PV-T outlet temperature is found to be between 30 - 35 °C, resulting in only 5% less electricity production than an equivalent PV system with equal nominal electricity capacity, while reducing overall electricity required for heating by over 15% compared to PV-integrated heat pumps. © 2024 IEEE.
