The Icefin vehicle is a novel, custom under-ice unmanned underwater vehicle. This vehicle was designed for polar sub-ice deployment and was deployed to McMurdo, Antarctica in November of 2014. An overview of the unique vehicle design is presented here, along with a summary of the deployment testing in Antarctica. Lessons learned from this deployment provided an opportunity for design improvements to the vehicle. An updated vehicle design is presented including the changes resulting from polar sub-ice field testing.

The purpose of this paper is to study positioning control performance of the one-DOF manipulator driven by pneumatic artificial muscles using active disturbance rejection controller. Owing to the pneumatic artificial muscle's highly nonlinear and time-varying behavior, it is difficult to achieve good positioning performance. In this paper, the nonlinear and time-varying behavior of pneumatic artificial muscle is considered as disturbance to be estimated by extended state observer. Tracking differentiator is designed to get corresponding smooth signal and differential signal of reference input to avoid overshoot. A linear error feedback combining with estimated value compensation of disturbance is designed to ensure a good response of system. Moreover, stability analysis of the close-loop system is given by Lyapunov theory. Finally, simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

In this letter, a magnetically controlled surface-loaded ferrite single pole single through (SPST) switch is presented. The ferrite slab is loaded on the broad wall surface of a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW). When a dc magnetic bias is applied to the ferrite slabs, the effective permeability of the ferrite becomes negative. In this case, the wave will be cut off. After investigating the design principle, an X-band switch prototype is fabricated and measured. Its insertion loss is less than 1.6 dB, return loss is better than 15 dB, and isolation is better than 27 dB in a frequency range from 9.5 to 11 GHz.

In order to study the reduction of radiated electromagnetic fields of a large direct current (DC) machine, its comprehensive equivalent source modeling is investigated. The edge modeling was used as the method of modeling which is implemented using finite element (FE) analysis. The individual models of the machine's winding are designed and then combined together. Both magnetic and electric field spectrums along lines and spaces were studied. Moreover, designed switches, in the model, were considered to enable turning each winding in the machines on and off to study the effect of each winding on the radiated field at far distance. The results from the equivalent source representation confirm that the proposed model shows the same result in comparison with full FE machine model. The simulation time from the equivalent source model was shown to be almost a hundred times less than the full FE model. This makes the proposed model ideal for the development of accurate tools for the estimation of radiated electromagnetic field emissions from multi electric machine environments during their development stage which is important for EMC evaluation. For verification purposes, the equivalent source model was used in multi machine system and the results of the equivalent source model of multi machine case match the results from the full FE model of the same case.

The power system now is a typical complex system, which has inherent characteristics of SOC. Studying on cascading failures are necessary and meaningful to insure the grid's safety, national security and economic development. This paper firstly establishes the indices of power system development diagnosis, which are closely relevant to the trigger of power system evolution. Then a cascading failure model is proposed, considering planning and evolution of the power system. This model is based on OPA model, including both fast dynamics and slow dynamics. The slow dynamic process simulates the evolution of power system, which represents the functions of the planning department, while the fast dynamic process simulates power flow and cascading failures, which takes the effects of dispatch, relay protection and automation into consideration. Moreover, simulations are tested on the case of Kaifeng-Shangqiu power system in Henan Province of China, and evolution results are presented.
