The paper proposes the design of an integrated vehicle control system for in-wheel electric vehicle, which is able to track road geometry with a predefined reference velocity. In the design the lateral and longitudinal dynamics are combined using the in-wheel motors and the steering system. The design methodology of the hierarchical control is proposed. The required control signals are calculated by applying high-level controllers, which are designed using a robust control method. For the control design the model is augmented with weighting functions specified by the performance demands. The actuators generating the necessary control signals in order to achieve the requirements for which low-level tracking controllers are designed.

This paper presents a distributed Flywheel Energy Storage System (FESS) for mitigating the effects of pulsed loads such as those exist in Shipboard Power systems (SPS). A comparison between distributed and centralized allocation of FESS was provided with and without the utilization of ultra-capacitors on the DC side. A model for hybrid AC/DC SPS with zonal distribution architecture was built in a simulation software. In order to accurately evaluate the performance of the system, three different case studies are presented with and without the FESS. The results of each case are analyzed and discussed. It can be shown that the distributed allocation of FESS can reduce the overloading on the generators and frequency fluctuations.

Augmented finite transition systems generalize nondeterministic transition systems with additional liveness conditions. We propose efficient algorithms for synthesizing control protocols for augmented finite transition systems to satisfy high-level specifications expressed in a fragment of linear temporal logic (LTL). We then use these algorithms within a framework for switching protocol synthesis for discrete-time dynamical systems, where augmented finite transition systems are used for abstracting the underlying dynamics. We introduce a notion of minimality for abstractions of certain fidelity and show that such minimal abstractions can be exactly computed for switched affine systems. Additionally, based on this framework, we present a procedure for computing digitally implementable switching protocols for continuous-time systems. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is illustrated through two examples of temperature control for buildings. © 2014 American Automatic control Council.

A tool for interrogating objects over a wide band of frequencies with subwavelength resolution at small standoff distances (near field region) in the transmission mode using a single source and detector measurement setup in the millimeter wave band is presented. The design utilizes optics like principles for guiding electromagnetic millimeter waves from large cross-sectional areas to considerably smaller sub-wavelength areas. While plano-convex lenses can be used to focus waves to a fine resolution, they usually require a large stand-off distance thus resulting in alignment and spacing issues. The design procedure and simulation analysis of the focusing probes are presented in this study along with experimental verification of performance and imaging and spectroscopy examples. Nondestructive evaluation will find benefit from such an apparatus including biological tissue imaging, electronic package integrity testing, composite dielectric structure evaluation for defects and microfluidic sensing.

This paper presents a co-simulation model using MATLAB~? toolboxes to illustrate an interaction between the communication system and the energy grid, coherent with the concept of smart grid that employs IEC 61850 communication standard. The MMS (Manufacturing Message Specification) protocol supported by IEC 61850, based on TCP/IP, is used for the vertical communication between the Supervisory and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system and Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) embedding the local control of different parts of the smart grid. In this paper an IED supporting the power control of a photovoltaic (PV) plant connected to a low-voltage (LV) utility grid is considered. Communication system consisting of the transport layer and a router placed on the network layer is modeled as an event-driven system using SimEvents? toolbox and energy grid is modeled as a time-driven system using SimPowersystems~? toolbox. Co-simulation results are obtained by combining different communication scenarios and time-varying irradiance scenarios for the PV plant when this one is required to provide a certain power in response to a power reference received from SCADA over the communication network. The analysis aims at illustrating the impact that stochastic behavior and delays due to network communication have on the global system behavior.

This paper is concerned with the problem of tracking target with multiple sensors in the presence of unknown dynamic bias. A suboptimal adaptive two-stage Kalman filter(ATKF) is designed with two reduce-order filters to estimate the target state and the dynamic bias in parallel when the bias model information is incomplete. Moreover, a distributed adaptive two-stage Kalman filter(DATKF) is developed for multi-sensor system based on the ATKF. The effectiveness of the ATKF and the DATKF are illustrated by the Monte Carlo simulation results.

In addition to simplicity, the DTC of the IM allows a good torque control in steady-state and transient operating conditions. However, high torque ripple is produced, which is reflected in speed estimation responses. It also increases acoustical noise and makes the voltage source inverter operated in high and variable switching frequency, requiring a high sampling frequency. In this paper, a simple effective ANN-based DTC of the induction machine is proposed. Neural networks with a simple architecture are designed and implemented in influential points of the direct torque control block of the three phase induction machine in order to improve its dynamic performance while preserving the DTC structure simplicity as much as possible. In particular, this paper proposes to reduce, on the one hand, the torque ripple and commutation frequency. Neural comparators are used to select the appropriate bandwidth for the torque and flux hysteresis controllers. Their aim is to optimize the ripple level in the developed torque and flux. On the other hand, a neural speed controller is designed in order to improve the system ability to respond rapidly to changes in process variables and mitigate the effects of external perturbations. The performance of the proposed control are tested in simulation and highlighted by comparing to the conventional DTC control based on conventional hysteresis comparators and conventional PI speed controller. The obtained results show the feasibility and good performances of the proposed control.

This study is primarily motivated by biological applications and focuses on the identification of Boolean networks from scarce and noisy data. We consider two Bayesian experimental design scenarios: selection of the observations under a budget, and input design. The goal is to maximize the mutual information between models and data, that is the ultimate statistical upper bound on the identifiability of a system from empirical data. First, we introduce a method to select which components of the state variable to measure under a budget constraint, and at which time points. Our greedy approach takes advantage of the submodularity of the mutual information, and hence requires only a polynomial number of evaluations of the objective to achieve near-optimal designs. Second, we consider the computationally harder task of designing sequences of input interventions, and propose a likelihood-free approximation method. Exact and approximate design solutions are verified with predictive models of genetic regulatory interaction networks in embryonic development.
