This paper presents a Radio Frequency based system for handling long-term drift of pose estimates for a robot performing odometer-based navigation in an indoor environment. The indoor environment is augmented with RFID tags and their associated door-markers to form a partially structured environment. To enhance the performance of the odometry, we adopted a Least Squares calibration approach to mitigate the effect of the systematic errors. The residual errors, mainly non-systematic, are handled by intermittent resetting of the robot's pose based on the global positioning references designed with the RFID tags and their associated door-markers. The results reveal that the long-term confidence in the estimated position improves about six times with this approach.

This paper presents a novel framework of human activity recognition with time series collected from inertial sensors. We model each action sequence with a collection of Linear Dynamic systems (LDSs), each LDS describing a small patch of the sequence. A codebook is formed by using the K-medoids clustering algorithm and a Bag-of-systems (BoS) is developed to represent the time series. A great advantage of this method is that the complicated feature design procedure is avoided and the LDSs can well capture the dynamics of the time series. Our experiment validation on public dataset shows the promising results.

This paper presents an efficient approach for solving the economic load dispatch (ELD) problem with valve-point effect using a new hybrid optimization algorithm. The main aim for solving ELD problem is to schedule the output of the committed generating units in order to meet the system load under various operating constraints. Since ELD is a non-linear and non-convex problem, stochastic search algorithms are considered as appropriate solutions. In this paper, the proposed new hybrid optimization algorithm is based on Clonal Selection Algorithm (CSA) that uses the positive features of two other optimization techniques, Gases Brownian Motion Optimization (GBMO) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), for local search and improving the quality of initial population, respectively. To validate the efficiency of the proposed hybrid method, termed as PG-Clonal in this paper, we tested it on two systems considering different constraints, and the obtained results are compared with the results of existing stochastic search algorithms available in the literature. The test results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed new hybrid PG-Clonal method in solving the ELD problem efficiently. © 2014 IEEE.

One of the key challenges for wearable electronics, is the ability to power them without cumbersome or bulky battery packs. In recent years, much work has been done on wearable textile batteries and supercapacitors [1-3], as well as various energy harvesting technologies, such as triboelectric generators, piezoelectric devices, solar textiles and wireless harvesting [4]. In this work, we demonstrate a fully knitted energy harvesting antenna and energy storing supercapacitor for powering e-textiles. Because the energy harvesting and storage are combined, other devices can receive power directly from the antenna while in an area with wifi. When there is no wifi available, the device can draw power from the supercapacitor.

Magnetic levitation technology is a promising solution to achieve ultra-precision motion. This paper presents a design of maglev planar positioner with less size and mass, compared with existing designs. The maglev planar positioner employs four groups of low-order moving magnet linear motors (MMLM) to provide force, and the Halbach PM array in each MMLM contains only one magnetic pole. As a result, the size and mass of the proposed maglev planar positioner is significantly reduced. Due to the inaccuracy of existing force models in predicting such a low-order MMLM, a novel modeling approach is introduced to derive the analytical force model in this paper. Finally, a prototype of this MMLM with one magnetic pole Halbach PM array is developed, and the experiment is conducted to validate the accuracy of the proposed force modeling approach.

Energy storage systems require battery cell balancing circuits to avoid divergence of cell state of charge (SOC). A modular approach based on distributed continuous cell-level control is presented that extends the balancing function to higher level pack performance objectives such as improving power capability and increasing pack lifetime. This is achieved by adding DC-DC converters in parallel with cells and using state estimation and control to autonomously bias individual cell SOC and SOC range, forcing healthier cells to be cycled deeper than weaker cells. The result is a pack with improved degradation characteristics and extended lifetime. The modular architecture and control concepts are developed and hardware results are demonstrated for a 91.2 Wh battery pack consisting of four series li-ion battery cells and four dual active bridge (DAB) bypass DC-DC converters. © 2014 IEEE.

Background: Surveillance of health care-associated infections is an essential component of infection prevention programs, but conventional systems are labor intensive and performance dependent. Objective: To develop an automatic surveillance and classification system for health care-associated bloodstream infection (HABSI), and to evaluate its performance by comparing it with a conventional infection control personnel (ICP)-based surveillance system. Methods: We developed a Web-based system that was integrated into the medical information system of a 2200-bed teaching hospital in Taiwan. The system automatically detects and classifies HABSIs. Results: In this study, the number of computer-detected HABSIs correlated closely with the number of HABSIs detected by ICP by department (n=20;r=.999 P<.001) and by time (n=14;r=.941;P<.001). Compared with reference standards, this system performed excellently with regard to sensitivity (98.16%), specificity (99.96%), positive predictive value (95.81%), and negative predictive value (99.98%). The system enabled decreasing the delay in confirmation of HABSI cases, on average, by 29 days. Conclusions: This system provides reliable and objective HABSI data for quality indicators, improving the delay caused by a conventional surveillance system. © 2020 JMIR Publications Inc. Device-to-device (D2D) communication is an emerging technique that can reduce device transmission power and enhance cellular capacity, which allows direct communication between two mobile devices. Amount of small packets may exchange between devices in burst mode transmission with the constraint of low overhead and low complexity for energy efficient processing. One of the major challenges for outband D2D communications is packet-based synchronization. Due to channel fading or path loss, the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is time-varying with a wide range, resulting in selection of an appropriate threshold for well balancing both missed detection probability (MDP) and false alarm probability (FAP) inconveniently. We propose an efficient packet detection scheme with easily threshold setting based on WiFi interface. By employing a novel normalized factor as a denominator in autocorrelation based timing metric, both theoretical analysis and the conducted simulation results show that the gap between MDP and FAP is enlarged, facilitating threshold selection for a wide range of SNR in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. More importantly, the threshold setting in multi-path Rayleigh fading channels can be determined according to the AWGN case straightforwardly.

Solving of interval DC power flow using interval Hull algorithm with preconditioning

With intermittent sources integrated into the power grid, power flows of the power grid are getting stochastic. Considering the uncertainty problem of DC power flow in the high voltage transmission system, this paper recommends an interval Hull algorithm with preconditioning to solve the interval DC power flow. Firstly, the diagonal dominant interval coefficient matrix is formed by preconditioning, then the H-matrix is obtained using the interval Hull algorithm. Different approximation methods are employed for the comparison matrix of H-matrix to improve precision. And the upper and lower bound of the distribution of interval DC power flow is obtained with the iterative method. The interval Hull algorithm and Monte Carlo algorithm are compared in the 9-bus test system, the result of which shows that the uncertainty in grid parameters is the main cause of errors. Furthermore, the Hull algorithm with preconditioning, the interval Hull method, the Krawczyk operator iteration method and the Gauss elimination method are compared in terms of accuracy and computing time on an IEEE 57-bus and an IEEE 118-bus test system, respectively. It is shown that the Hull method with preconditioning has the best accuracy, and the time complexity is far lower than that of the Monte Carlo algorithm. © 2014 State Grid Electric Power Research Institute Press.
