In this paper, we propose an information geometry approach (IGA) for signal detection in ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We formulate the signal detection as obtaining the marginals of the a posteriori probability distribution of the transmitted symbol vector. Then, a maximization of the a posteriori marginals (MPM) for signal detection can be performed. With the information geometry theory, we calculate the approximations of the a posteriori marginals. It is formulated as an iterative m-projection process. We then apply the central-limit-theorem (CLT) to simplify the calculation of the m-projection since the direct calculation of the m-projection is of exponential-complexity. With the CLT, we obtain an approximate solution of the m-projection, which is asymptotically accurate. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed IGA is a promising and efficient method to implement the signal detector in ultra-massive MIMO systems. © 2023 IEEE.

Out-of-distribution Object Detection through Bayesian Uncertainty Estimation

The superior performance of object detectors is often established under the condition that the test samples are in the same distribution as the training data. However, in many practical applications, out-of-distribution (OOD) instances are inevitable and usually lead to uncertainty in the results. In this paper, we propose a novel, intuitive, and scalable probabilistic object detection method for OOD detection. Unlike other uncertainty-modeling methods that either require huge computational costs to infer the weight distributions or rely on model training through synthetic outlier data, our method is able to distinguish between in-distribution (ID) data and OOD data via weight parameter sampling from proposed Gaussian distributions based on pre-trained networks. We demonstrate that our Bayesian object detector can achieve satisfactory OOD identification performance by reducing the FPR95 score by up to 8.19% and increasing the AUROC score by up to 13.94% when trained on BDD100k and VOC datasets as the ID datasets and evaluated on COCO2017 dataset as the OOD dataset. We present a tunable repetition rate frequency comb realized by cascaded electro-optical modulators with a high nonlinear AlGaAs-on-isolator waveguide. 18-26.5 GHz comb spacing tunability with broadband spectra was achieved. The electrooculogram (EOG) represents the electrical activity of the eye. Since most EOG-based applications need a large amount of data to be stored and transmitted, compression is required. A study on the use of discrete wavelet packet decomposition (DWPD) for compressing EOG signals is presented in this paper. The EOG signals are recorded using a commercial bioamplifier. The compression algorithm is implemented using the MATLAB software. The performance of the compression was evaluated using three parameters: compression ratio (CR), energy retention, and percent root-mean-square difference (PRD). The experimental results show that the DWPD allows for CRs of 82% while retaining almost 100% of the signal energy with a PRD of only 7%.

In the evolving landscape of cloud computing, federated cloud infrastructures present unique challenges and opportunities for resource and application monitoring. Monitoring the diverse array of cloud resources and applications within a federated cloud environment is crucial for delivering consistent Quality of Service (QoS) and continuous oversight across various cloud applications and infrastructure. Despite the various successes documented in the literature on multi-cloud monitoring, existing frameworks have not fully explored or provided enough insights into centralized monitoring of resources, applications, and network devices in a federated cloud environment. This paper introduces FedMonitor, an implementation architecture designed to enhance the monitoring and notification capabilities in federated cloud environments by building on the theoretical ideals in our earlier work (i.e. FEDARGOS-V1). FedMonitor leverages Prometheus and Grafana to crawl, manage and visualize metrics from diverse software services, hardware resources, and network devices within a federated cloud environment. The results demonstrate hat FedMonitor improves the effectiveness of resource and application monitoring in federated cloud environments. © 2024 IEEE.

Suppression of Phase Current Ripple and Torque Harmonics in Four-Module PMSM with Asymmetric Mutual Inductance

In N-module motors, uniform carrier phase shifting (UCPS) by 2π/N between modules can effectively suppress torque harmonics caused by high-frequency switching of power devices. In multi-module motors with fractional-slot concentrated winding, the mutual inductance between adjacent windings is higher than that between non-adjacent windings. Although the conventional UCPS can reduce the torque sideband harmonics synthesized by the four modules, this asymmetric mutual inductance (AMI) paradoxically increases phase current ripple in each sub-module, leading to higher system losses. Aiming at this problem, this paper derives the mathematical model of N-module motor with AMI, analyzes the limitations of the traditional UCPS method that increases the phase current ripple. For different optimization objectives, two carrier phaseshifting angle optimized strategies are proposed to achieve integrated suppression of torque sideband harmonics and intramodule phase current ripples, with a genetic algorithm improving optimization speed. A threshold coefficient is introduced to achieve a tradeoff between phase current ripple and q-axis current harmonics, which can be adjusted to prioritize objectives based on user requirements. To enhance algorithm adaptability, the paper further investigates model variations under uneven torque distribution in sub-healthy states and proposes an improved comprehensive optimization algorithm, limiting torque sideband harmonics and current ripple in both healthy and sub-healthy conditions. Finally, the proposed algorithm is validated experimentally by a four-module permanent magnet synchronous motor. © 2025 IEEE.

In transiting from one civilization to another, technology has played a vital and positive role. In the 21st century, one of the digital developments that is paving ways for human life improvement is machine-assisted technology using Artificial Intelligence (AI). Artificial Intelligence has successfully enhanced man's capacity in solving complex problems and processes. However, as developed nations continue to reap from the adoption of AI in various fields of human endeavors, the continent of Africa has remained behind, especially in AI-based skills and research. Various governments in developing nations have encouraged the adoption of AI, especially in institutions of learning. However, theoretical adoption without practical experience has remained an ineffective way of bridging the digital divide. In this paper we present the outcome of a practical approach to bridging the AI divide among students and researchers in Africa through funding support from the Google TensorFlow College Outreach Award. A 3-day hybrid bootcamp was organized (11th to 13th December, 2023) using the Google funding in order to equip postgraduate students and researchers with AI and collaborative research skills. A pre-survey method was employed to ascertain the knowledge level of the bootcamp participants. From the pre-surveyed feedback, training sessions on various AI domains were presented, and participant equipped with practical AI skills using a deployed AI-based cloud programming platform running on the private Federated Genomic Cloud (FEDGEN) infrastructure at Covenant University. A post-survey feedback was used to ascertain the effectiveness of this approach. A comparative analysis of the pre-survey and post-survey reveals a 70% improvement of AI skills among participants. This shows that having continuous training session for students and researchers is an effective method in closing the AI skills gap between developed and developing nations. © 2024 IEEE.

Grid-forming converters are widely envisioned to be the cornerstone of future converter-dominated power systems. However, standard grid forming (GFM) control strategies assume a fully controllable source with enough headroom behind the converter and only implicitly address renewable generation limits through the converter limits. This can lead to instabilities on time scales of both primary and secondary frequency control and jeopardize the safe and reliable operation of electric power systems. In this work, we leverage the recently proposed dual-port GFM control that maps power imbalances in the grid to the power generation interfaced by the power converter. We show that this mechanism allows for considering and transparently addressing limits of renewable generation (e.g., solar photovoltaics and wind) in primary and secondary frequency control. We illustrate that renewable generation using dual-port GFM control can directly integrate into prevailing secondary control methods such as automatic generation control (AGC). Moreover, we discuss the limitations of standard AGC when one or more areas of a power system are dominated by renewable generation and propose an anti-windup strategy to address the power generation limits of renewables. Finally, we verify our findings in a time-domain, electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation.

This paper studies the synchronization problem of two-player multiagent systems through reinforcement learning methods. A Nash-minmax strategy is formulated, where the interactions of two players in the same agent are non-zero-sum, while interactions of players between agents are zero-sum games. We propose an offline model-based reinforcement learning algorithm to identify Nash solutions for players within each agent, as well as the worst control solutions for players in neighboring antagonistic agents. On this basis, a data-driven off-policy algorithm is provided to alleviate the requirement for accurate system dynamics in the offline algorithm. Besides, the convergence of the proposed algorithms is analyzed. Finally, simulation results verify the effectiveness of the designed algorithms.
