The increasing adoption of machine learning and deep learning models in critical applications raises the issue of ensuring their trustworthiness, which can be addressed by quantifying the uncertainty of their predictions. However, the black-box nature of many such models allows only to quantify uncertainty through ad hoc superstructures, which require to develop and train a model in an uncertainty-aware fashion. However, for applications where previously trained models are already in operation, it would be interesting to develop uncertainty quantification approaches acting as lightweight "plug-ins" that can be applied on top of such models without modifying and re-training them. In this contribution we present a research activity of the Pattern Recognition and Applications Lab of the University of Cagliari related to a recently proposed post hoc uncertainty quantification method, we named dropout injection, which is a variant of the well-known Monte Carlo dropout, and does not require any re-training nor any further gradient descent-based optimization;this makes it a promising, lightweight solution for integrating uncertainty quantification on any already-trained neural network. We are investigating a theoretically grounded solution to make dropout injection as effective as Monte Carlo dropout through a suitable rescaling of its uncertainty measure;we are also evaluating its effectiveness in the computer vision tasks of crowd counting and density estimation for intelligent video surveillance, thanks to our participation in a project funded by the European Space Agency. © 2022 Copyright for this paper by its authors. In the era of artificial intelligence generated content (AIGC), conditional multimodal synthesis technologies (e.g., text-to-image) are dynamically reshaping the natural content. Brain signals, serving as potential reflections of how the brain interprets external information, exhibit a distinctive one-to-many correspondence with various external modalities. This correspondence makes brain signals emerge as a promising guiding condition for multimodal synthesis (e.g., image, text, and audio), which is crucial for developing practical brain–computer interface systems and unraveling complex mechanisms underlying human perception. This survey comprehensively examines the emerging field of brain-conditional multimodal synthesis, termed AIGC-brain, to delineate the current landscape and future directions. To begin, related neuroimaging datasets and generative models are introduced as the foundation of AIGC-brain decoding and analysis. Next, we present a comprehensive taxonomy according to AIGC-brain methodologies, followed by task-specific representative work and implementation details to facilitate in-depth comparison and analysis. Quality assessments are then introduced for both qualitative and quantitative evaluation. Finally, this survey explores insights gained, outlining current challenges and prospects of AIGC-brain. As a pioneering survey, this article paves the way for future advances in AIGC-brain research. © 2020 IEEE.

control of users' access to the information system is the main part of the security system. Moreover, it must work in real time and be easily reconfigured. Such controller can be built by using fuzzy logic. In this paper, the authors propose a fuzzy controller for access distribution to the student assessment system. This approach allows applying the proposed fuzzy controller to any evaluation system, as it can be easily reconfigured. Hardware implementation of this controller allows to increase the stability of the information security system because of subjectivity exclusion. © 2023 IEEE.

The efficient operation of HVAC&R systems are based on keeping indoor temperature and air quality at an optimum level without disturbing comfort. Starting from this point, in this experimental research, the factors affecting the measurement accuracy during the room temperature detection of a wall mount fan coil thermostat were examined. Among the external effects, the effect of the device components on the measurement was focused and the solution of the measurement deviations occurred in this extent was investigated. Based on the experiments, the algorithm that must be applied to reach the optimum temperature measurement of a room thermostat developed for Fan Coil systems was proposed. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper introduces a robust controller designed for load frequency control in a dual-area integrated power grid. Here, the suggested controller is a blend of a fuzzy logic controller with an integral controller. The parameters of the integral controller and frequency bias settings are optimized to enhance the dynamic response of the proposed controller. To attain this, three distinct optimization algorithms are employed, i.e., genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, and pattern search. A new objective function using settling time, settling-max, and settling-min with a suitable weight factor is used to improve the parameters estimation process. A comparative analysis is performed using the proposed approach and classical-I controller under two cases considering several load disturbance scenarios. Furthermore, the suggested hybrid controller is evaluated and compared with similar models in the literature. As expected, the proposed controller exhibits superior performance. © 2023 IEEE.

The growing demand for accurate control in varying and unknown environments has sparked a corresponding increase in the requirements for power supply components, including permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). To infer the unknown part of the system, machine learning techniques are widely employed, especially Gaussian process regression (GPR) due to its flexibility of continuous system modeling and its guaranteed performance. For practical implementation, distributed GPR is adopted to alleviate the high computational complexity. However, the study of distributed GPR from a control perspective remains an open problem. In this paper, a control-aware optimal aggregation strategy of distributed GPR for PMSMs is proposed based on the Lyapunov stability theory. This strategy exclusively leverages the posterior mean, thereby obviating the need for computationally intensive calculations associated with posterior variance in alternative approaches. Moreover, the straightforward calculation process of our proposed strategy lends itself to seamless implementation in high-frequency PMSM control. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is demonstrated in the simulations. © 2023 IEEE.

Brain-computer Interface (BCI) systems are relatively new technologies that could play a significant role in aiding the recovery of impaired activities resulting from neuromuscular disabilities in affected individuals. Accurate recognition and classification of motor imagery in BCI systems present a challenge, leading to extensive research in recent years aimed at improving the accuracy of these systems. In this study, a combination of the Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) method and a multi-layer Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is employed. Initially, the signal is decomposed into Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs) using EMD, and all IMFs across all trials are analyzed to select the best ones, which are then fed into the CNN as inputs. Additionally, the study incorporates the fusion of three CNN networks, each corresponding to a different IMF. The features extracted from these networks are combined and used to train an SVM classifier. The proposed method achieved an accuracy of 86.1% on the BCI-2a 2008 dataset, outperforming other state-of-the-art approaches.

In complex missions such as search and rescue, robots must make intelligent decisions in unknown environments, relying on their ability to perceive and understand their surroundings. High-quality and real-time reconstruction enhances situational awareness and is crucial for intelligent robotics. Traditional methods often struggle with poor scene representation or are too slow for real-time use. Inspired by the efficacy of 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS), we propose a hierarchical planning framework for fast and high-fidelity active reconstruction. Our method evaluates completion and quality gain to adaptively guide reconstruction, integrating global and local planning for efficiency. Typical autonomous driving systems are a combination of machine learning algorithms (often involving neural networks) and classical feedback controllers. Whilst significant progress has been made in recent years on the neural network side of these systems, only limited progress has been made on the feedback controller side. Often, the feedback control gains are simply passed from paper to paper with little re-tuning taking place, even though the changes to the neural networks can alter the vehicle's closed loop dynamics. The aim of this paper is to highlight the limitations of this approach; it is shown that re-tuning the feedback controller can be a simple way to improve autonomous driving performance. To demonstrate this, the PID gains of the longitudinal controller in the TCP autonomous vehicle algorithm are tuned. This causes the driving score in CARLA to increase from 73.21 to 77.38, with the results averaged over 16 driving scenarios. Moreover, it was observed that the performance benefits were most apparent during challenging driving scenarios, such as during rain or night time, as the tuned controller led to a more assertive driving style. These results demonstrate the value of developing both the neural network and feedback control policies of autonomous driving systems simultaneously, as this can be a simple and methodical way to improve autonomous driving system performance and robustness.
