Prompted by the increasing demands in system reliability and survivability, fault detection and accommodation has quickly become one of the most active research areas in the intelligent control community. In this work, the necessary and sufficient conditions for system online stability under catastrophic failures have been derived based upon discrete-time Lyapunov stability theory. An online fault accommodation control framework is proposed to deal with the desired trajectory-tracking problem for systems suffering from various unknown and unanticipated catastrophic component failures. The approach is to continuously monitor the system performance and identify the system's current state by using an efficient online fault detection scheme based upon our best knowledge of the nominal system and nominal controller. Once a fault is detected, a neural network is suggested as the online estimator to learn and approximate the unknown system failure dynamics. Effective control signals to accommodate the dynamic failures are then computed through the realization of the neural network estimator for the unknown failures based only upon the partially available information of the faults.

This article introduces a mathematical theory for estimating the power spectral density (PSD) of a random signal based on low-sampling-rate measurements. We formulate the problem using a mathematical model where an observer sees a discrete-time WSS (wide-sense stationary) random signal x(n) through a bank of measurement devices or sensors. Each sensor outputs a measurement signal v/sub i/(n) whose sampling rate is only a fraction of the sampling rate assumed for the original non-observable signal. Knowing statistics of v/sub i/(n) is not, in general, sufficient to specify the PSD of x(n) uniquely. Therefore, the problem of multirate spectral estimation is mathematically ill-posed. We show that it is possible to convert the multirate spectral estimation problem into a mathematically well-posed one using the maximum entropy principle. Moreover, we obtain a closed-form expression for the PSD estimate that results from applying this principle and show that it is unique.

The paper focuses on the problem of rule extraction from neural networks, with the aim of transforming the knowledge captured in a trained neural network into a familiar form for human user. The ultimate purpose for us is to develop human friendly shells for neural network based systems. In the first part of the paper it is presented an approach on extracting traditional crisp rules out of the neural networks, while the last part of the paper presents how to transform the neural network into a set of fuzzy rules using an interactive fuzzy operator. The rules are extracted from ordinary neural networks, which have not a structure that facilitate the rule extraction. The neural network trained with the well known Iris data set was considered as benchmark problem. © Springer-Verlag 2001.

The paper presents a number of image processing and pattern recognition applications using coordinate logic filters which execute coordinate logic operations among the pixels of the image. These filters are very efficient in various 1D, 2D or higher-dimensional digital signal processing applications, such as noise removal, magnification, opening, closing, skeletonization, coding, edge detection, feature extraction, and fractal modeling. The key issue in the coordinate logic analysis of images is the method of fast successive filtering and managing of the residues. The desired processing is achieved by executing only direct logic operations among the pixels of the given image. Coordinate logic filters can be easily and quickly implemented using logic circuits or cellular automata; this is their primary advantage.

We propose a novel hybrid intelligent system (HIS) that is a combination of numerical and linguistic knowledge representation. The proposed HIS is a hierarchical integration of an incremental learning fuzzy neural network (ILFN) and a fuzzy linguistic model optimized via the genetic algorithm. The ILFN is self-organizing network with the capability of fast, online, incremental learning. The linguistic model is constructed based on knowledge embedded in the trained ILFN. The knowledge captured from the low-level ILFN can be mapped to the higher-level linguistic model and vice versa. The GA is applied to optimize the linguistic model to maintain high accuracy and comprehensibility. The resulted HIS is capable of dealing with low-level numerical computation and higher-level linguistic computation. After the system completely constructed, it can incrementally learn new information in both numerical and linguistic structures. To evaluate the system's performance the well-known benchmark Wisconsin breast cancer data was studied as an application to medical diagnosis. The simulation results show that the proposed HIS perform better than the individual standalone systems.

One much researched issue in reinforcement learning is the trade off between exploration and exploitation. Being able to effectively balance exploration and exploitation activities becomes even more crucial in a dynamic environment. An algorithm is proposed herein that provides one solution to the exploration vs. exploitation dilemma. The algorithm is presented in the context of a path-finding agent in a dynamic grid-world problem. The state-value function used is penalty based, allowing the agent to act over the space of paths with minimal penalties. A forgetting mechanism is implemented that allows the agent to explore paths that were previously determined to be suboptimal. Simulation results are used to analyze the behavior of the proposed algorithm in a dynamic environment.

Deals with the use of object oriented technologies in the modeling of industrial plants that have to be remotely monitored and/or controlled. The main goal is to propose a design methodology for obtaining the model of the so-called Virtual Plant, that a remote and certified user will use to access the real plant for performing command actions and/or monitoring. The type of applications and systems targeted must have autonomous behavior and be interconnected and accessible. Reliability, maintainability and flexibility are also required goals, as well as a high rate of reusability of the applications. The methodology has been applied to the remote process monitoring and control of manufacturing processes. The Virtual Plant Model is, in fact, the part of the plant that can be accessed by a certified remote client and thus it can be constituted by a set of sub-models, as many as different types of clients. The Virtual Plant resides inside the Application Server who is responsible of communicating with the cell controller and sends the image of the actual plant state (the Virtual Plant) as required by the remote client (monitoring) or sends the client commands to the cell controller.

Space-time coding (STC) schemes for communication systems employing multiple transmit and receive antennas have recently been attracting increased attention. We address the optimal detection of space-time codes under various interference conditions and the optimal information transfer from the detector to an error-correcting channel decoder. We discuss various aspects of channel modelling for STC communication receivers. In particular, while many previous works on the topic commonly use a stochastic channel model, we provide some justification for modelling the channel as a deterministic unknown when designing receiver algorithms.

Space-time coding (STC) schemes for communication systems employing multiple transmit and receive antennas have been attracting increased attention. The so-called linear space-time block codes (STBC) have been of particular interest due to their good performance and low decoding complexity. In this paper we take a systematic maximum-likelihood (ML) approach to the decoding of STBC for unknown propagation channels and unknown noise and interference conditions. We derive a low-complexity ML decoding algorithm based on cyclic maximization of the likelihood function. Furthermore, we discuss the design of optimal training sequences and optimal information transfer to an outer decoder. Numerical examples demonstrate the performance of our algorithm.

This paper deals with the develop of a new recurrent neuro-fuzzy model for complex systems from input-output data. In this paper a recurrent fuzzy neural network, called RFasArt (Recurrent FasArt), has been applied to model a complex biotechnological process: a wastewater treatment plant. This network is based on the Adaptative Resonance Theory (ART) but introducing formalisms from the fuzzy set theory and taking into account the contextual information in its processing stage. In order to compare the results obtained with this fuzzy neural network, a classical recurrent neural network has been implemented and used to model the same process. The results shows the better behaviour of the RFasArt system. At the same time with this architecture it is possible to obtain a knowledge base of fuzzy rules where is stored all the knowledge of the plant learned by the fuzzy neural network.
