Single phase switched reluctance machines (SRMs) have a special place in the emerging high-volume, low-cost and low-performance applications in appliances and also in high-speed low-power motor drives in various industrial applications. Single phase SRMs have a number of drawbacks: low power density as they have only 50% utilization of windings, lack of self-starting feature unless otherwise built in to the machine, most of the time with permanent magnets or sometimes with distinct and special machine rotor configurations or additional mechanisms. Many of these approaches are expensive or make the manufacturing process more difficult. In order to overcome such disadvantages, a method involving interpoles and windings is proposed in this paper. The proposed structure also provides four-quadrant operational capability with an appropriate converter. In addition to the proposed single phase SRM topology, a new and novel converter topology requiring only a single switch and a single diode is proposed. This enables for the first time a compact and low-cost single phase SRM. The present configuration, in addition, enables rotor position sensorless operation of the proposed single SRM drive system. Experimental results of the proposed SRM drive system are included.

The emitter turn-off thyristor (ETO) is a new MOS-controlled thyristor that is suitable for use in high-power converters due to its improved switching performance and easy control. This paper analyzes the abnormal failures related to the parasitic diode of the ETO in high-frequency converters for the first time. To prevent this failure, several solutions are proposed and improved ETOs are developed. Experimental results show that the proposed solutions can properly solve this problem.

This paper generalizes the geometric representation of membership functions comprising a finite number of characteristic points. An extended class of membership functions, satisfying certain monotonicity conditions, can now be expressed as elements in the space of square integrable functions. Specifically, bell-shaped membership functions, which were not possible before, can now be accommodated with this generalized representation. An example interpolation problem, treated using both the finite-dimensional approach and the generalized approach, is included for illustration.

This paper addresses networking and traffic control problems in network systems along with the potential for introducing soft-computing applications at supervisory control level. The incentive Stackelberg strategy control concept was introduced to the networking model that comprises subsidiary systems of users and of network. A linear strategy is proposed for the elastic traffic problem, and results are demonstrated and illustrated via Kelly's (1997) example. The presented method is extended to the non-elastic traffic problem and results are also illustrated via a slightly modified Kelly example. Ways of employing combined analytical and soft-computing approaches and techniques in a hybrid framework have been investigated. A fuzzy-Petri-net supervisor is proposed to implement the strategic decision and control layer. Insofar obtained results are rather encouraging, and this research continues further towards possible implementation as well as some open theoretical issues.

The problem of robust H∞ state-feedback control design for a class of continuous-time linear systems with Markovian jumping parameters and multiple time-varying delays at the states, and subject to uncertain parameters is addressed in this paper. It is assumed that the jumping parameters are available and the uncertain parameter belong to given convex bounded domains (polytope type uncertainty). A delay-independent sufficient condition assuring robust mean square stability and a prescribed level of H∞ disturbance attenuation for the closed-loop system is established in terms of linear matrix inequalities. © 2001 EUCA.

On the Structure of Singular Discrete Linear Repetitive Processes

Repetitive processes are a distinct class of 2D systems of both theoretical and applications interest. They are characterized by a series of sweeps through a set of dynamics with explicit interaction between the outputs, or pass profiles, produced on successive passes. Their essential unique features are that (i) information propagation is over a finite duration in one of the two separate directions of information propagation; and (ii) the explicit interaction between successive pass profiles can lead to oscillations in the sequence of pass profiles that increase in amplitude in the pass to pass direction. In the case of processes with linear dynamics (either differential or discrete) a reasonably rich systems theory is available for models which are standard (or nonsingular). In this paper, we provide the first substantial results on discrete linear repetitive processes described by a singular state space model.

We address the problem of removing specular ground surface reflections and leakage/cross-talk from downward looking stepped frequency ground-penetrating radar (GPR) data. A new model for the ground-bounce and the leakage/cross-talk is introduced. An algorithm that jointly estimates these effects from collected data is presented. The algorithm has the sound foundation of a nonlinear least squares (LS) fit to the presented model. The minimization is performed in a cyclic manner where one step is a linear LS minimization and the other step is a non-linear LS minimization where the optimum can efficiently be found using, e.g., the chirp-transform algorithm. The results after applying the algorithm to measured GPR data, collected at a US army test range, are also shown.

Discrete linear repetitive processes are a distinct class of 2D linear systems with applications in areas ranging from long-wall coal cutting through to iterative learning control schemes. The main feature which makes them distinct from other classes of 2D linear systems is that information propagation in one of the two distinct directions only occurs over a finite duration. We give an LMI based interpretation of stability for the sub-class of so-called discrete linear repetitive processes, both open loop and closed loop under a well defined practically relevant control law, and then apply this theory to solve currently open problems relating to robustness and stability margins for these processes. Also it is shown that the LMI approach to the computation of the stability margins for these processes can be combined with a concept of a pole for them to link these margins to expected performance-a key feature which is missing from the analysis of stability margins currently available in the 2D systems literature.

An electromagnetic-type vibratory feeder of is a typical transportation device used in automatic weighers. As existing feeders are driven by feedforward control, the so-called "firing angle control", the driver cannot negate sudden disturbances. In this study, we consider applying a feedback control for such a feeder system. First, we give the two details of modelings for the vibration part and for the electromagnetic force part. Next, a feedback control system is constructed for the electromagnetic vibration feeder for which we propose a two-degrees-of-freedom proportional plus integral plus derivative (PID) controller with nonlinear elements. Next, we apply the feedback control to the feeder with a standard trough. Finally, we consider a method compatible with many varieties of troughs by adjusting a nonlinear element. On the basis of the results of some experiments, we confirm that the two-degrees-of-freedom PID control is more effective than the conventional firing angle control.

The extended Kalman filter is known to have excellent filtering characteristics, but its convergence is guaranteed only if it is initialized close enough to the true state value. Numerical differentiation based observers, on the other hand, may be designed to be globally convergent to a neighborhood of the true state value, but when the measurements are corrupted by significant uncertain signals their state estimates are delayed. In a previous work we proposed an observer design scheme for nonlinear systems which combines these two techniques to yield a globally exponentially converging observer. The necessity to implement an extended Kalman filter has two shortcomings. One is it does not apply when we face a system with an observability condition weaker than that the linearized dynamics about the estimated trajectory is completely uniformly observable. The other limitation is the computation burden. In this paper we propose an alternative which is still a global exponential observer. While the computation burden may not have been significantly reduced, definitely, it applies to a wider class of nonlinear systems. Noteworthy we prove that this global exponential observer is also bounded which is a feature the nonlinear observers in the literature rarely possess. The observer scheme is illustrated through a bioprocess example whose linearization is not completely uniformly observable.
