A number of neural network models and training procedures for time series prediction have been proposed in the technical literature. These models typically used uni-directional computation flow or its modifications. In this study a novel concept of bi-directional computation style is proposed and applied to prediction tasks. Since the coupling effects between the future prediction system and the past prediction system help the proposed model improve its performance, it is found that the prediction score is better than with the traditional uni-directional method. The bi-directional predicting architecture has been found to perform better than the conventional one when tested with standard benchmark sunspots data.

Repetitive processes are a distinct class of 2D systems of both practical and theoretical interest. Their essential characteristic is repeated sweeps, termed passes, through a set of dynamics defined over a finite duration with explicit interaction between the outputs, or pass profiles, produced as the process dynamics evolve. Experience has shown that these processes cannot be studied/controlled by direct application of existing theory. This fact, and the growing list of applications areas, has prompted an ongoing research programme into the development of a 'mature' systems theory for these processes for onward translation into reliable generally applicable controller design algorithms. This paper develops stability tests for a sub-class of so-called differential linear repetitive processes in the presence of a general set of initial conditions, where it is known that the structure of these conditions is critical to their stability properties.

This paper deals mainly with the load side voltage stability. A neural-network based dynamic load model is incorporated into voltage stability analysis. FACTS (flexible AC transmission systems) devices are applied for power system stability enhancement. The use of dynamic load model and FACTS devices for control may sometimes lead to excitation of generator dynamics, resulting in the whole power system more complex. Conventional methods often neglect either the load dynamics or generator dynamics, while the proposed methods deal with both. For the convenience of control design, proper system models are developed. Methods are presented for thyristor controlled series capacitor and static var compensator control cases to represent the controlled system through three sets of equations: generator dynamics, load dynamics and control constraints. The control is then synthesized in the form of neural networks, trained by using the pre-specified optimal trajectories.

Deals with the control of a thrust vectored flying wing known as the ducted fan, developed at California Institute of Technology. The experiment was developed to serve as a testbed for nonlinear control design. In an earlier paper, the authors reported simulation results based on a simplified (no aerodynamics involved) planar model of the ducted fan around hover position. We report on the modeling and simulation of the ducted fan in forward flight, where aerodynamic forces and moments can no longer be ignored. A receding horizon scheme is developed to generate trajectories for the forward flight model. Using a more simplified version of the model, some aggressive trajectories are generated. These trajectories are then used as a reference in the receding horizon scheme, and morphed into the trajectories of the full model. Simulation results depict the capabilities of the ducted fan as well as this methodology in performing aggressive maneuvers.

A theoretical study on the synthesis of hierarchical neural controllers based on power systems is presented in the paper. This theoretical study concludes that the proposed hierarchical neural controller construction is not only useful for power system applications, but should be suitable for other applications. It first shows that time-optimal (or other "optimal") neural controllers can be synthesized to approximately identify the switching manifold for control. It then shows that the hierarchical neural controller call deal with system uncertainties, and should perform reasonably well in theory. Further, adaptive hierarchical neural controllers are developed to deal with time varying characteristic of the systems, and it is shown that they are able to perform robustly.

Auction results reflect the market condition at the time the auction is performed. The market condition consists not only of electricity demand and supply at that period, but also includes the transmission network condition at that period. The network condition plays a major role in the auction results. If some transmission lines are congested, it can interfere with the desired operation of the network; e.g., block the transaction from the inexpensive sources to the high demand areas. Because of these reasons, an independent contract administrator (ICA) may wish to consider auction results when making decisions related to power system expansion. This work outlines a framework of applying a decision analysis approach to the auction results in selecting the expansion plan for the system.

This paper describes a design of an associative memory array processor that can be used in the acquisition and processing of ultrasonograph images. The major concept is to design a parallel architecture that reduces task's execution time by analyzing multiple parts of the image concurrently. The architecture constitutes a distinctive type of single-instruction stream, multiple-data stream machine that is built around content-addressable associative memory slabs, that allow parallel access of multiple memory words. The basic building block of this architecture is a one-pixel processing element, which can perform the standard load (data acquisition) function and also contains some special comparison logic to enable its content to be compared with an external data. Several image processing operations are implemented in parallel, among them: component labeling, size filtering, pattern centralization, and pattern recognition. The proposed novel architecture can label specific regions into the image and isolate them intelligently. It is also capable of storing templates that may be considered as references for similar cases. The system is able to perform learning process and extract features from several input patterns and store the reference pattern in a slice. Moreover, the system is capable of comparing an input image with a pre-stored template during recognition process. The proposed architecture is of interest because it speeds up the recognition process and helps radiology specialists to write their reports confidently.

This paper describes generalizations of the MUSIC and root-MUSIC algorithms for direction of arrival (DOA) estimation to arrays composed of multiple translated subarrays. The advantage of these new approaches is that the DOAs can be estimated using either a one-dimensional search or by rooting a polynomial, as opposed to a multidimensional search as required by the multiple invariance (MI)-ESPRIT algorithm. While MI-MUSIC and root-MI-MUSIC are not statistically efficient like MI-ESPRIT, they do perform better than a single invariance implementation of ESPRIT, and are thus better suited for finding the initial conditions required by the MI-ESPRIT search.

In many embedded control system applications, the control algorithm includes both logical and data flow portions. We apply formal methods of system verification to discrete-state algorithms. Specifically, we make use of a formal model checking tool to prove or disprove various properties of the algorithm. Questions pertaining to the achievability of states and paths and proper variable assignment are cast as logical assertions in computation tree logic (CTL), and evaluated using the model checker. In addition, we describe an approach for generating scenarios; that is, a sequence of inputs and parameters that will take a discrete-state system model through a given sequence. We present several examples illustrating various questions that the designer may wish to pose, and an appropriate CTL assertion for each.

This paper presents the design and simulation of an autopilot for a nonaxisymmetric missile model to robustly track planar bank-to-turn (BTT) maneuvers while regulating sideslip. The method used to design the autopilot relies on trajectory linearization and is realized through two controller subdesigns. The first design problem involves finding a nonlinear dynamic inverse for the plant. The second design involves designing a trajectory stabilizing controller using a parallel D-eigenvalue stability concept developed for linear time varying (LTV) systems. The autopilot designed by this method is then compared with autopilots designed using two other nonlinear methods.
