A bound is derived on the accuracy in causally estimating a Gaussian process from nonlinear observations. Both additive Gaussian noise and Poisson observations are included. The bound is used to study the control of a stochastic linear dynamical system with nonlinear observations of either type and an average quadratic cost. An asymptotic Separation Theorem is established showing that a linear feedback control law, involving a state estimate, is asymptotically optimum as the accuracy of the state estimate approaches the bound. In designing the man-multiloop control system for a small submersible, many different types of terminal equipment for manual intervention can interface with the human operator, including handlebars, wheels, joysticks and pedals. The proper choice of the means to control the boat in attitude and steering, as well as the actual implementation, constitute a major human factors design problem. This paper discusses a particularly promising concept of manual control that has shown superiority over several alternatives, and decribes the real-time simulation employed in verifying its advantages.

a model avionics system is presented showing how a doubly redundant, moderate speed digital computer subsystem can be made to solve the requirements of SST Navigation and control. This paper also considers that triple redundancy is feasible in terms of cost, performance, and reliability in the concept of functional modularity for SST application. The modular avionics systems presumes that the digital computer subsystem will be held to a sufficient minimum and that all the decision making will be made at the prerogative of the pilot. A brief elaboration of this philosophy suggests that the flight profile will be programmed for standard conditions and only deviations from standard will be computed and shown to the pilot etc., etc., etc. 1964 Institute of Navigation

This book reflects the considerable current industrial interest and investment in process controlsystems. The use of computersystems in process control can provide great benefits, and it is estimated that efficiency can be increased by up to 30%. It is not surprising, therefore, that there have been considerable efforts by system designers and users to introduce and use such systems. Process hardware is integrated into a complete production system through data processing. It is for this purpose that technical specialists (e. g. electrical, mechanical, electronics, communication and process engineers and program mers) are involved in data processing. The scope of this book is therefore to assist in the selection of computer hardware and software that match the functional specification of the data processing component of a particular system. The principal points covered in this book are set out below. Part One: Production process hardware for a standard process is outlined and the information processing hardware is described. Large mechanical process hardware and process information devices (e. g. sensors and control elements involved in the process) create a coherent production unit, or system, which can be the control unit (i. e. the basic process unit). The hardware processes are described and the mathematics explained. This enables the application of control laws in order to linearize the process about its working point, as well as a stratification of process control tasks.
