Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy models have been the popular choice for multi-model based nonlinear system identification for controller design. However, the interpretation of the model from a dynamical systems point of view is still unclear. We investigate the interpretation of the TS fuzzy models in terms of local dynamics of nonlinear systems in state space. The investigation is based on the comparison between the constant-affine recursive i/o equation and constant-affine state space representations. We show that the true local dynamics is not identifiable by TS fuzzy models by analysis and example. For the identification of constant-affine state space models, a subspace identification algorithm is proposed to identify the true local dynamics with zero initial conditions.

In this paper a hierarchical architecture that combines a high degree of reconfigurability and long-term memory is proposed as a fault tolerant control algorithm for complex nonlinear systems. Dual heuristic programming (DHP) is used for adapting to faults as they occur for the first time in an effort to prevent the build up of a general failure and also as tuning device after switching to a known scenario. A dynamical database, initialized with as much information of the plant as available, oversees the DHP controller. The decisions of which environments to record, when to intervene and where to switch are autonomously taken based on specifically designed quality indices. Results of the application of the complete algorithm to a proof-of-the-concept numerical example help to illustrate the fine interrelations between each of its subsystems.

An automatic facial feature extraction method is presented in this paper. The method is based on the edge density distribution of the image. In the preprocessing stage a face is approximated to an ellipse, and a genetic algorithm is applied to search for the best ellipse region match. In the feature extraction stage, the genetic algorithm is applied to extract the facial features, such as the eyes, nose and mouth, in the predefined sub regions. The simulation results validates that the proposed method is capable of automatically extracting features from various video images effectively under natural lighting environments and in the presence of certain amount of artificial noise and of multi-face oriented with angles.

In this paper, a virtual factory using the manufacturing message specification (MMS) companion standard is implemented. The MMS companion standard (9506-3/spl sim/9506-7) and virtual machines are designed and implemented for robot, numerical controller (NC), programmable logic controller (PLC), and process control (PC). Finally, the MMS Internet monitoring system (MIMS) is developed for the testing system.

In this paper, the design of explicit rate-based congestion control in high speed communication networks is considered. At a bottleneck node, there are multiple best-effort sources competing with other high priority cross traffic sources. The goal of congestion control is to achieve high link utilization, low packet loss, low delay, and fairness among the best-effort sources. In this paper, the high priority traffic is described by an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) process. To deal with the propagation delays associated with the best-effort sources, model predictive control, particularly, generalized predictive control, techniques are proposed to solve the congestion problem here. It is demonstrated that the proposed controller performs well and is robust to delay uncertainties. In addition, in a multiple-nodes configuration, the controller provides max-min fairness.

In this paper discrete-time iterative learning control (ILC) systems are analysed from an algebraic point of view. The algebraic analysis shows that an ILC synthesis problem can be considered as a tracking problem of a multi-channel step-function. Furthermore, the plant to be controlled is a static multivariable plant. Another major contribution of this paper is a general convergence theory of ILC systems in terms of their closed-loop poles. This convergence theory shows that time-variant ILC control laws should be typically used instead of time-invariant control laws in order to guarantee good transient tracking behaviour. Simulations high-light the different theoretical findings in this paper.

This paper attempts to look at the fundamental problem of fault detection and isolation (FDI) in nonlinear systems. Using the idea of input reconstruction by means of dynamic inversion the authors first discuss the properties of input (or fault) observability in linear systems. The extension of the results to nonlinear systems as well as the mathematical conditions of the calculation of the inverse system, which provides the inverse in finite algorithmic steps, are given. The applicability of the inversion process to fault reconstruction in nonlinear systems is demonstrated.

A formal mapping between static information models and dynamic models is presented. The static information models are given according to an international standard for product, process and resource information exchange. The dynamic models are described as discrete event systems. The product, process and resource information is automatically converted into product routes and used for simulation, controller synthesis and verification. The focus in this paper is on resource booking problems. A high level language, which combines Petri nets and process algebra, is presented and used for specification of desired routes. A main implication of this methodology is to enable the reuse of process information when creating dynamic models for process control. This method also enables simulation and verification to be conducted early in the development.

Using other agents' experiences and knowledge, a learning agent may learn faster, make fewer mistakes, and create some rides for unseen situations. These benefits will be gained if the learning agents know the area of expertise and the expertness values of each other. In this paper, some Q-learning agents with different skills and expertness levels cooperate in learning. The agents use some criteria to judge others information and knowledge. Four expertness criterion, certainty and entropy measures are used to assign degrees of importance to others' Q-Tables. Effects of measuring these values based on their whole Q-Table, a portion of Q-Tables that reflects their proficiencies, and the states in Q-Tables on the learning quality are studied. Simple strategy sharing and two different weighted strategy-sharing methods are used to combine the acquired knowledge from different agents.
