A new learning algorithm suitable for pattern classification in machine condition health monitoring based on fuzzy neural networks called an "incremental learning fuzzy neuron network" (ILFN) has been developed. The ILFN, using Gaussian neurons to represent the distributions of the input space, is an online one-pass incremental learning algorithm. The network is a self-organized classifier with the ability to adaptively learn new information without forgetting old knowledge. To prove the concept the simulations have been performed with the vibration data known as Westland vibration data set. Furthermore, the classification performance of the network has been tested on other benchmark data sets, such as Fisher's iris data (1936) and a vowel data set. For the generalization capability, comparison studies among other well-known classifiers were performed and the ILFN was found competitive with or even superior to many existing classifiers. Additionally the ILFN uses far less training time than conventional classifiers.

The LMS algorithm forms the core of a number of adaptive control schemes. It has on one hand provided certain degree of robustness to these algorithms but on the other hand its convergence rate is notoriously slow. We propose a method to initialize the LMS algorithm which dramatically shortens its adaptation period. We also prove that under certain condition this initialization can be computed without explicit knowledge of either the reference or noise spectrum. Although the work is illustrated using the filtered-X scheme, this idea can also be applied to other similar schemes. Two successful experiments starting from black-box identification to real-time control have verified the effectiveness of this idea.

In this paper the robust fault detection and isolation (FDI) problem in linear systems, which are subjected to multiple faults and time varying system perturbations is discussed. The detection and isolation problem is treated by using algebraic methods and geometric design concepts. The idea of the classical Luenberger observer is generalized in an attempt that residual generators for solving the robust FDI problem can be designed.

Stateflow/sup TM/ is a MATLAB/Simulink toolbox that supports the development of executable specifications for discrete-state functions. It also supports general flowcharting of program functions. This paper describes a MATLAB program, sf2smv 2.0, that generates input for a symbolic model checking program, SMV, to verify properties of Stateflow/sup TM/ diagrams in Simulink. The SMV modules are constructed to reflect precisely the execution semantics in the simulation of Stateflow/sup TM/ diagrams. This extends previous work that created verification files that reflected an idealized version of the Stateflow/sup TM/ semantics. This paper describes how the principal Stateflow/sup TM/ execution rules are translated into SMV modules. Examples are used to illustrate the transformation procedures and their application to verify properties of executable specifications for control features in automotive powertrain control applications.

Diop et al. previously (1994) proposed a general observer design methodology based upon numerical differentiation and the interpretation of observability of a system as the solvability of the system's dynamical equations for the state vector in terms of a finite number of derivatives of the output and input. Numerical differentiation-base observers are alternatives to asymptotic observers for nonlinear systems. Various techniques are known to be efficient for the estimation of the few first derivatives from data with low frequency content, such as polynomial- and spline-based least squares, and averaged central differences. The main advantages of such observers are intuitiveness, flexibility and speed. However, as is the case of many inverse problems, differentiation is an ill-posed operator. This communication proposes the use of regularization to partially overcome the noise sensitivity that is inherent in the standard numerical differentiation. Regularization of numerical derivatives from experimental data consists of two operations: filtering and differentiation. Mollification is a method of filter design that is fairly well amenable to a mathematical analysis, including computation of estimation error bounds. In this method experimental data is projected onto Sobolev spaces of signals with less high frequency content, which may then be differentiated stably. The filters in question are infinite dimensional. They can be implemented approximately by means of digital Fourier transformation on finite moving windows of the data.

The existence and stability properties of periodic orbits are studied for nonlinear systems with impulse effects. This is achieved with an extension of the well-known method of Poincare. The main result is then applied to a model of an under actuated, five degree of freedom biped robot with a torso in order to prove, for the first time, the existence of an asymptotically stable walking cycle.

SDL is currently gaining interest as a system level specification language for HW/SW codesign. Automated synthesis of SDL in hardware so far had problems with its efficiency. The investigations on the resource usage of SDL-to-VHDL designs presented in this paper identify two key challenges: minimizing the overhead introduced by SDL process infrastructure, and choosing the appropriate synthesis method. This paper presents a framework for SDL hardware synthesis where VHDL code generation, high-level synthesis and RT-level synthesis are combined. A configurable run-time environment implements services like data handling and message passing in efficient, hand-coded library components, which take into account properties of the target architecture. For these components RT-level synthesis was found to be suitable. The behavior of each SDL process on the other hand is freely specified by the system designer. Depending on the type of application, i.e. complex data-oriented or control-oriented either high-level synthesis, RT-level synthesis, or a combination of both can prove to be optimal.

He was previously a Senior Engineer with San Diego Gas & Electric with responsibility for its energy application and lighting programs. Prior to joining SDG&E Mr. Leite was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy where he served in operations and engineering assignments. Following active duty he accepted a Naval Reserve commission and has retired with the rank of Captain. His assignments included command operational and engineering tours. Mr. Leite has also served as an expert witness in admiralty and engineering matters. He is a gradate of the University of California Berkeley with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering and also holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration from National University in San Diego. Mr. Leite is a Registered Professional Engineer in the States of California and Minnesota. Mr. Leite is a member of ASNE ASCE MORS the Illuminating Engineering Society and the U.S. Naval institute. Dennis Roy Mensh:is a Senior Engineer with PRC Inc. a division of Litton Industries in Crystal City VA where he supports modeling and simulation tasking for combat systems. He received BS and MS degrees in applied Physics from Lopola College in Baltimore MD and the American University in Washington DC. He has also completed the course work towards a Ph.D. degree in computer science specializing in the fields of Operations Reseurch Anabsis Systems Analysis and Computer Modeling and Simulation. Previously he was employed at the White Oak Laboratory of the Naval Surface Warfare Carter in Silver Spring MD where he worked in the areas of naval sensor and weapon system analysis

This paper defines, develops and examines a set of generic analysis tools that can be applied to Models and Simulations at the systems engineering level of fidelity. The tools examine the performance and effectiveness of Sensors;Weapons;and Battle Management, Command, control, Communications, computers, and Intelligence ((BMCI)-I-4) systems and equipment. The Measures of Performance (MOPs), Measures of Effectiveness (MOEs) and Measures of Force Effectiveness (MOFEs) were extracted from the Modular Command and control Structure Paradigm which was developed at the Naval Postgraduate School. The paradigm provides for the development of evaluation criteria (MOPs, MOEs, and MOFEs) in a framework that ensures the traceability of system performance and effectiveness to the system operational requirements as specified in the Operational Requirements Document (ORD). Also, the analysis tools provide insight and valid estimates of numerical measures of the defined system functionality threads, which represent the system's operational requirements as specified in the ORD. The tools are directly transferrable and applicable to test and evaluation exercise events which are conducted in support of the development and acquisition of systems and equipment. Once the levels of system performance have been defined, the Paradigm generates a quantitative database that becomes a useful tool in system tradeoffs and selection. Once the alternative system suites have been defined, the suites can be analyzed in terms of system functionality threads and their corresponding performance capabilities versus cost.

Simultaneous Fault Detection Of Heat Exchangers

A grey box model-based method for fault diagnosis is proposed in this paper. The method is based on a first principle model of the process unit: a heat exchanger, and on a grey box model of the faults: the deterioration of the heat transfer surface by aging and the leaking of the outer container. The deterioration of the heat transfer surface is due to material settling, and in old heat exchangers pieces of this material can break off and cause damage in the equipment. A recursive least squares estimator with forgetting factor is used to track both the heat transfer coefficients and the cold side volume. The heat transfer coefficients are estimated both from the hot and cold side equations. The settled material breakage fault is detected via detection of abrupt positive jumps in the estimated heat transfer coefficients using a detector based on a cumulative sum (CUSUM) test. The proposed method enables simultaneous detection of the two fault types considered. Fault localization along the equipment length is also possible when temperature measurements are available along the length.
