Due to the nonlinearity of dynamical equations in robotic systems, nonlinear compliance has more potential for energy consumption reduction. Moreover, the legged robots require adaptive structures so as to maximize their efficiency w.r.t. the new environments and gaits. Therefore, having nonlinear adaptive compliance is essential in legged robots. In this paper, we take one step towards the realization of nonlinear compliances with adaptable torque-deflection profiles. So as to achieve this goal, we present a mechanism which consists of four linear extension springs. Changing the arrangement of linear springs can adapt the compliance profile to the desired one. In addition, to optimize the arrangement of linear springs in an online manner, an adaptation rule is presented. The proposed adaptation rule adapts the compliance profile such that the actuator's torque and consequently the energy consumption are reduced. The performance of presented adaptation rule for actuator's torque minimization is analyzed by means of simulations. In simulations, we observed that the adaptation rule not only minimizes the energy consumption but also improves the tracking performance of the controller. Finally, to realize nonlinear adaptive compliance, a prototype of the presented mechanism is designed and constructed.

The development of fault-tolerant quantum processors relies on the ability to control noise. A particularly insidious form of noise is temporally correlated or non-Markovian noise. By combining randomized benchmarking with supervised machine learning algorithms, we develop a method to learn the details of temporally correlated noise. In particular, we can learn the time-independent evolution operator of system plus bath and this leads to (i) the ability to characterize the degree of non-Markovianity of the dynamics and (ii) the ability to predict the dynamics of the system even beyond the times we have used to train our model. We exemplify this by implementing our method on a superconducting quantum processor. Our experimental results show a drastic change between the Markovian and non-Markovian regimes for the learning accuracies. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A novel engineering model reduction method is proposed in this paper that can be applied to a chemical reaction network (CRN) with chains of linear reactions. The reduced model is a delayed CRN with possibly different delays but with less state variables than the original model. As the first step of the model reduction, a decomposition method is also developed to transform chains with joint reactions into independent chains of linear reactions. The well known example of McKeithan's network is used as a case study to illustrate the basic concepts and the design method. © 2018

For the study of wind farm and wake effect, the steady-state wake models like FLORIS were proposed and used during wind farm operations to achieve higher wind power utilization and conversion. However, the dynamic performance of the wake should also be involved in favor of better optimizations. In this paper, a data-driven analysis and modeling method, dynamic mode decomposition (DMD), is used to construct dynamic flow model with high-fidelity flow data. Two DMD-derived models are constructed based on flow data in three-dimensional and two-dimensional spaces, respectively. The obtained models and respective flows are compared in the time and frequency domain. Results show that both models have apparent differences in the frequency domain, but the dominant wake characteristics' consistency is maintained.

This paper discusses on the design, development and deployment of a flexible and modular platform supporting smart predictive maintenance operations, enabled by microservices architecture and virtualization technologies. Virtualization allows the platform to be deployed in a multi-tenant environment, while facilitating resource isolation and independency from specific technologies or services. Moreover, the proposed platform supports scalable data storage supporting an effective and efficient management of large volume of Industry 4.0 data. Methodologies of data-driven predictive maintenance are provided to the user as-a-service, facilitating offline training and online execution of pre-trained analytics models, while the connection of the raw data to contextual information support their understanding and interpretation, while guaranteeing interoperability across heterogeneous systems. A use case related to the predictive maintenance operations of a robotic manipulator is examined to demonstrate the effectiveness and the efficiency of the proposed platform.

Photonic spin Hall effect is a manifestation of spin-orbit interaction of light and can be measured by a transverse shift δ of photons with opposite spins. The precise measurement of transverse shifts can enable many spin-related applications, such as precise metrology and optical sensing. However, this transverse shift is generally small (i.e. δ/λ -1, λ is the wavelength), which impedes its precise measurement. To-date proposals to generate giant spin Hall effect (namely with δ/λ > 102) have severe limitations, particularly its occurrence only over a narrow angular cone (with a width of ∆0 70◦ by exploiting the interface between free space and uniaxial epsilon-near-zero media. The underlying mechanism is ascribed to the almost-perfect polarization splitting between s and p polarized waves at the designed interface. Remarkably, this almost-perfect polarization splitting does not resort to the interference effect and is insensitive to the incident angle, which then gives rise to the wide-angle giant photonic spin Hall effect. Distributed delay model of the McKeithan’s network

In this paper CRNs containing linear reaction chains with multiple joint complexes were considered in order to obtain an equivalent reduced order delayed CRN model with distributed time delays. For this purpose, our earlier method (Lipták and Hangos (2018)) for decomposing the chains of linear reactions with multiple joint complexes was used together with the "linear chain trick". An analytical expression for the kernel function of the distributed delay was also derived from the reaction rate coefficients of the linear reaction chains. Our approach was demonstrated using the example of the well known McKeithan’s network model of kinetic proofreading.

A Primal-Dual SGD Algorithm for Distributed Nonconvex Optimization

The distributed nonconvex optimization problem of minimizing a global cost function formed by a sum of n local cost functions by using local information exchange is considered. This problem is an important component of many machine learning techniques with data parallelism, such as deep learning and federated learning. We propose a distributed primal–dual stochastic gradient descent (SGD) algorithm, suitable for arbitrarily connected communication networks and any smooth (possibly nonconvex) cost functions. We show that the proposed algorithm achieves the linear speedup convergence rate O(1/√nT) for general nonconvex cost functions and the linear speedup convergence rate O(1/(nT)) when the global cost function satisfies the Polyak–Lojasiewicz (P–L) condition, where T is the total number of iterations. We also show that the output of the proposed algorithm with constant parameters linearly converges to a neighborhood of a global optimum. We demonstrate through numerical experiments the efficiency of our algorithm in comparison with the baseline centralized SGD and recently proposed distributed SGD algorithms. 3D Geometry-Based UAV-MIMO Channel Modeling and Simulation

A more general narrowband regular-shaped geometry-based statistical model(RS-GBSM) combined with the line of sight(LoS) and single bounce(SB) rays for unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) channel is proposed in this paper. The channel characteristics, including space-time correlation function(STCF), Doppler power spectral density(DPSD), level crossing rate(LCR) and average fade duration(AFD), are derived based on the single sphere reference model for a non-isotropic environment. The corresponding sum-of-sinusoids(SoS) simulation models including both the deterministic model and statistical model with finite scatterers are also proposed for practicable implementation. The simulation results illustrate that the simulation models well reproduce the channel characteristics of the single sphere reference model with sufficient simulation scatterers. And the statistical model has a better approximation of the reference model in comparison with the deterministic one when the simulation trials of the stochastic model are sufficient. The effects of the parameters such as flight height, moving direction and Rice factor on the characteristics are also studied.
