This paper showcases a real-world example of a system that achieves collaborative localization and mapping of multiple agents within a building. The proposed system processes the odometry and 3D point cloud data collected by the agents moving around the building to automatically generate the building’s floorplan on which the agent trajectories are overlaid. The wearable hardware consists of a low-cost passive integrated sensor that includes both a camera and an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) and an embedded compute unit. The system’s capabilities are shown through real-world experiments.

Hand paralysis caused by stroke, spinal cord injury, or neurological trauma has a significant impact on the independence and quality of life of the patients. The hand exoskeleton can provide hand assistance and improve the patient's grasp. In this article, a novel wearable flexible hand exoskeleton is proposed to assist users in activities of daily life. To create a simple and lightweight assistive hand exoskeleton, 3D printing is used to manufacture most of the components, and a remote drive system is designed to reduce the weight of the hand exoskeleton. A ball pair device and a slider device are used to ensure the freedom of the thumb and the adaptability of the hand exoskeleton to different hand sizes. Finally, the experiments are conducted to verify that the hand exoskeleton can achieve motion assistance. © 2022 IEEE.

The paper presents the results of modern research on the effects of electromagnetic terahertz radiation in the frequency range 0.5–100 THz at different levels of power density and exposure time on the viability of normal and cancer cells. As an accompanying tool for monitoring the effect of radiation on biological cells and tissues, spectroscopic research methods in the terahertz frequency range are described, and attention is focused on the possibility of using the spectra of interstitial water as a marker of pathological processes. The problem of the safety of terahertz radiation for the human body from the point of view of its effect on the structures and systems of biological cells is also considered.

The paper presents a reconfigurable fault-tolerant control strategy for a semi-active suspension using magnetorheological (MR) damper. The aim of the control reconfiguration is to handle the adverse behaviour of the MR damper due to oil leakage induced by the wear of the suspension component. The proposed method relies on the data driven model of the MR damper, using an estimation procedure to quantify the healthiness of the damper and to estimate the performance degradation due to the oil leakage. The reconfiguration control strategy is founded on the Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) framework, where a scheduling variable is defined to represent the healthiness level of the MR damper. By the scaling of the control action through the scheduling variable, the performance degradation of the MR damper can be compensated to match the behaviour of the healthy dampers. The proposed method is demonstrated through simulations, comparing the performance of the fault-tolerant LPV control to conventional semi-active control methods

Recognizing and understanding implicit driving cues across diverse cultures is imperative for fostering safe and efficient global transportation systems, particularly when training new immigrants holding driving licenses from culturally disparate countries. Additionally, it is essential to consider cross-cultural differences in the development of Automated Driving features tailored to different countries. Previous piloting studies have compared and analyzed cross-cultural differences in selected implicit driving cues, but they typically examine only limited countries. However, a comprehensive worldwide comparison and analysis are lacking. This study conducts a thorough review of existing literature, online blogs, and expert insights from diverse countries to investigate cross-cultural disparities in driving behaviors, specifically focusing on implicit cues such as non-verbal communication (e.g., hand gestures, signal lighting, honking), norms, and social expectations. Through comparative analysis, variations in driving cues are illuminated across different cultural contexts. Based on the findings and identified gaps, a research roadmap is proposed for future research to further explore and address these differences, aiming to enhance intercultural communication, improve road safety, and increase transportation efficiency on a global scale. This paper presents the pioneering work towards a comprehensive understanding of the implicit driving cues across cultures. Moreover, this understanding will inform the development of automated driving systems tailored to different countries considering cross-cultural differences.

Location-based service (LBS) devices have enhanced daily life convenience but raised privacy concerns regarding user location data. For this, this research presents a novel approach to safeguard trajectory privacy through Similarity-based Trajectory Partitioning (STSM). The process begins by dividing trajectory equivalence classes based on distinct timestamps. Trajectory similarity is then assessed within each class using metrics such as Frechet distance, trajectory direction, and speed. Subsequently, a trajectory graph is constructed for each class, and the Dijkstra algorithm is applied to partition the graph using the k-subgraph method, effectively converting trajectory partitioning into graph partitioning. To meet publication requirements, Laplace noise is added to sensitive data linked to nodes and edges within the subgraph. Comparative experiments on real-world data confirm the efficacy, rationality, data availability, and privacy protection capabilities of the proposed trajectory partitioning algorithm, underscoring its superiority over alternative methods.

Rehabilitation robots play an important role in the motor function rehabilitation for stroke survivors with hemiplegia. However, the rehabilitation effect of current robots is still limited partly because a single training of motor function can be strongly affected by the decreased blood supply function of the bedridden patients. This work proposed an approach to study the coupling relationship between the motor and blood supply functions by combining the synchronously recorded EEG and cerebral blood oxygen information, where the cerebrations in different movement paradigms were analyzed from an aspect of "functional coupling". The results show that the information of oxyhemoglobin concentration change (ΔHbO) can effectively indicate the cortex activation, and a stronger blood supply is needed in cortexes to perform body movements. The correlations within motor cortexes are significantly stronger than the ones between motor and prefrontal cortexes, and a higher resistance level of extremity training will cause stronger correlations. Calculation of transfer entropy (TE) shows that there exists a bidirectional information transmission between the electrophysiological and blood supply signals, and more information is transmitted always in the direction from ΔHbO to EEG than in the opposite direction. The information transmission or the coupling relationship can be significantly enhanced by extremity movements, and large TE values are achieved in the Theta, Beta and Gamma frequency bands of EEG that correspond to motor functions. This work has demonstrated the functional coupling between nerve and blood microcirculation, which would provide a technical guidance to improve the rehabilitation effect for current robot systems and have great application potentials.

Epoxy resin insulations are considered as a potential candidate for various applications like transformers, cable terminations, power electronic device packaging, and bushings. This has promoted a great interest in their use as high voltage insulation materials for high frequency applications. This work presents the effect of different curing agent concentrations on the electrical and thermal properties of epoxy resin for DC and high frequency applications. Differential scanning calorimetry is used to characterize the thermal performance of the materials. The insulation properties such as breakdown measurements under DC and high frequency stress, DC resistivity, and space charge distributions at different temperatures, and dielectric spectroscopy at different frequencies and temperatures are performed. Results reveal that high curing agent concentrations optimize the thermal and electrical performance of epoxy resin insulation. However, high frequency stress severely degrades the breakdown and dielectric properties of all the prepared materials. By the control of resin stoichiometry, epoxy resin with suitable electrical and thermal properties can be realized for high frequency applications. © 2021 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Dirichlet Process-based Robust Clustering using the Median-of-Means Estimator

Clustering stands as one of the most prominent challenges in unsupervised machine learning. Among centroid-based methods, the classic k-means algorithm, based on Lloyd’s heuristic, is widely used. Nonetheless, it is a well-known fact that k-means and its variants face several challenges, including heavy reliance on initial cluster centroids, susceptibility to converging into local minima of the objective function, and sensitivity to outliers and noise in the data. When data contains noise or outliers, the Median-of-Means (MoM) estimator offers a robust alternative for stabilizing centroid-based methods. On a different note, another limitation in many commonly used clustering methods is the need to specify the number of clusters beforehand. Model-based approaches, such as Bayesian nonparametric models, address this issue by incorporating infinite mixture models, which eliminate the requirement for predefined cluster counts. Motivated by these facts, in this article, we propose an efficient and automatic clustering technique by integrating the strengths of model-based and centroid-based methodologies. Our method mitigates the effect of noise on the quality of clustering;while at the same time, estimates the number of clusters. Statistical guarantees on an upper bound of clustering error, and rigorous assessment through simulated and real datasets, suggest the advantages of our proposed method over existing state-of-the-art clustering algorithms. © 2023, CC BY.
