M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electronics engineering from the University of Tokyo Tokyo Japan in 1976 1978 and 1986 respectively. In 1978 he joined Yokosuka Electrical Communication Laboratories IT. During 1978–1984 he was engaged in the research and development of optical fibre transmission technologies. His R&D experiences cover fibre optic video transmission systems for CATV distribution systems and subscriber loop systems. Since 1985 he has been actiie in the development of broadband ISDN based on ATM techniques. His main research interests include information transport network architectures variable network architectures with virtual paths broadband transport technology ATM network performance analysis and photonic networks based on optical paths. He has over 90 research publications in international journal and conferences. He is serving as a member of the Advisory Board of the International Journal of Communication Systems. He is currently a group leader of the Photonic Network Research Group in Optical Network Systems Laboratories at NTT. Dr Sat0 received the Young Engineer Award in 1984 and the Excellent Paper Award in 1991 both from the Institute of Electronics Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE) of JAPAN. Dr Sato is a member of the IEICE of JAPAN and a senior member of the IEEE Communications Society. Atsushi Watanabe received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in Information Science from Ibaraki University in 1989 and 1991 respectively. In 1991 he joined the Transmission Systems Laboratories Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation Yokosuka Kanagawa Japan. From 1991 he was engaged in research on traffic control in ATM networks. Since 1993 he has been engaged in research on optical path cross-connect system architectures. Mr Watanabe is a member of the Institute of Electronics Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE) of Japan.

He has been involved in research and development activities in ISDN VSAT networks data communications and network systems and architectures. Prior to his current positions Dr. Chitre was a Principal Scientist in the Network Technology Division at COMSAT Laboratories. Dr. Chitre joined COMSAT Laboratories in 1980. He has made major contributions to the analysis and architecture of data communication ISDN and BISDN via satellite. Dr. Chitre directs and participates in the international and national standards activities in ISDN BISDN and data communication as they apply to satellite communication. He was Chairman of the Working Group on Protocols and Network Timing Function of the CCIR/CCITT Joint Ad Hoc Group on ISDN-Satellite Matters during 1990–1992. Currently he is the Chairman of the Working Group on New Technologies in the ITU Intersector Coordinating Group (ICG) on Satellite Matters. He received a Master of Science degree from the same institution in 1989. Upon graduation he joined Bell-Northern Research where he studied the performance aspects of broadband networks including SONET frame relay and ATM systems. In 1994 he formed a new group to spearhead the investigation of performance requirements for BISDN services. Marek Wernik is Senior Manager Broadband Systems and Services in BNR Ottawa Canada. He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Warsaw Technical University Poland in 1973 and 1978 respectively. Dr. Wernik worked as assistant professor at Warsaw Technical University and at Oran University of Technology Algeria conducting research in the fields of digital signal processing and radio communications measurement systems. In 1984 he joined BNR Advanced Technology group where he took part in the exploratory work on photonic and broadband switching and fibre network planning. Since then he has been working on various aspects of broadband networks and ATM systems. Between 1988 and 1990 he was a manager responsible for analysis and evaluation of traffic management and performance of ATM networks. As Senior Manager Dr. Wernik is currently responsible for broadband network design and planning in BNR's Systems Engineering Division. His responsibilities include in particular definition of management and control for ATM networks work with telecommunications carriers to identify requirements and plan deployment of broadband services and networks broadband product planning support and ATM Forum technical representation. Dr. Wernik is a Member of the IEEE Communications Society and has been actively involved in co-operation with Canadian universities supporting research in the field of broadband communications.

He spent the next two years working as a Visiting Professor in Egypt after which he moved to Ottawa Canada in 1982. He assumed teaching and research positions in Carleton and Manitoba Univerities and later moved to Concordia University Montreal Canada in 1983 where he is now a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He has published numerous papers in IEEE and international journals in the areas of spread spectrum and networking. He is a well-known expert in these areas and serves as a consultant to many companies.
