Effect of iron-loaded sludge biochar amendments on phytoremediation potential of Cr-contaminated soils by Leersia hexandra swartz

In this study, the effect of iron-loaded sludge biochar (ISBC) with different amendment dosages (mass ratio of biochar to soil equal to 0, 0.01, 0.025 and 0.05) on the phytoremediation potential of Leersia hexandra swartz (L. hexandra) to Cr-contaminated soil was investigated. With increasing ISBC dosage from 0 to 0.05, plant height, aerial tissue biomass and root biomass increased from 15.70 cm, 0.152 g pot−1 and 0.058 g pot−1 to 24.33 cm, 0.304 g pot−1 and 0.125 g pot−1, respectively. Simultaneously, the Cr contents in aerial tissues and roots increased from 1039.68 mg kg−1 to 2427.87 mg kg−1 to 1526.57 mg kg−1 and 3242.62 mg kg−1, respectively. Thus, the corresponding bioenrichment factor (BCF), bioaccumulation factor (BAF), total phytoextraction (TPE) and translocation factor (TF) values were also increased from 10.52, 6.20, 0.158 mg pot−1 (aerial tissue)/0.140 mg pot−1 (roots) and 0.428 to 15.15, 9.42, 0.464 mg pot−1 (aerial tissue)/0.405 mg pot−1 (roots) and 0.471, respectively. The significant positive effect of ISBC amendment was primarily attributed to the following three aspects: 1) the root resistance index (RRI), tolerance index (TI) and growth toxicity index (GTI) of L. hexandra to Cr were increased from 100%, 100% and 0%–216.88%, 155.02% and 42.18%, respectively;2) the bio-available Cr content in the soil was decreased from 1.89 mg L−1 to 1.48 mg L−1, while the corresponding TU (toxicity units) value was declined from 0.303 to 0.217;3) the activities of urease, sucrase and alkaline phosphatase in soil were increased from 0.186 mg g−1, 1.40 mg g−1 and 0.156 mg g−1 to 0.242 mg g−1, 1.86 mg g−1 and 0.287 mg g−1, respectively. In summary, ISBC amendment was able to significantly improve the phytoremediation of Cr-contaminated soils by L. hexandra. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

Human Activity Recognition (HAR) systems hold great potential in aiding disabled and elderly individuals to live independently. Various approaches have been suggested for identifying human activities, including sensors, cameras, wearables, and contactless microwave sensing. This latter method is gaining significant attention due to its ability to address privacy concerns arising from cameras and alleviate discomfort caused by wearables. However, current microwave sensing techniques have a key limitation, requiring controlled and ideal conditions to achieve accurate activity detection. In this paper, we propose RISense, a deep learning-aided system for HAR using Re-configurable Intelligent Surface (RIS). RISense introduces novel modules designed to generate a human activity representational space that ensures separability between activity classes, even in the presence of noisy and distorted Channel State Information (CSI) measurements. These representations are then fed into a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), which learns the sequential changes in features to accurately estimate the user activity. The evaluation of RISense across two realistic settings, encompassing both non-line-of-sight and multi-floor scenarios, showcases its efficacy. Specifically, RISense achieves an activity recognition accuracy of 98.7%. This performance overcomes the accuracy of state-of-the-art systems by over 15%. These findings highlight the superior efficacy of the proposed methodologies, including integrating RIS and advanced learning techniques.

In this study, the enhancement of palladium-based catalysts' resistance to toxicity was pursued through the synthesis of six catalysts, namely PdCu MOF1000, Pd MOF1000, Cu MOF1000, PdCu MOF500, Pd MOF500, and Cu MOF500, employing a hydrothermal method. The study delved into the catalytic reduction capabilities of these six catalysts concerning nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N), alongside exploring the impact on the catalytic activities of PdCu MOF1000, Pd MOF1000, and Cu MOF1000 upon the introduction of sodium sulfite to the system. Notably, at a NO3-N concentration of 50 mg/L, significant removal efficacy was observed with PdCu MOF1000, Pd MOF1000, and Cu MOF1000, with PdCu MOF1000 exhibiting a remarkable nitrate nitrogen removal rate of 97.8%. Upon the addition of 200 μM sodium sulfite to the system, the removal efficiency of PdCu MOF1000 remained high at 93.3%, while a reduction in the removal rate of NO3-N by Pd MOF1000 was noted. Quenching experiments substantiated the occurrence of hydrogen radicals [H] within the reaction system, thereby facilitating the indirect electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate nitrogen. Characterization of PdCu MOF1000 using High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) and Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM) unveiled the presence of Pd single atoms within PdCu MOF1000, highlighting the catalyst's diminished susceptibility to sulfide. This observation suggested that catalysts containing Pd single atoms held promise in enhancing their resilience to toxicity. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In order to simultaneously measure the displacements of multiple targets, the laser self-mixing interference(SMI) measurement method based on variational mode decomposition(VMD) is proposed. The SMI signal containing the motion information of the external targets is detected by a photodiode. The VMD can non-recursively decompose the mixed SMI signal into SMI signals corresponding to different external targets. The displacement signals can be reconstructed by fringe counting method and interpolation method. The experimental results show that the displacement signals of different external targets can be reconstructed with half wavelength accuracy, which verifies the correctness and feasibility of this method. This method can improve the measurement efficiency, which offers an effective method for the multi-channel displacement measurement.

A series of catalysts with MOFs-derived Co3O4@MnOx hollow-sphere structure was prepared. The effects of organic ligands and photoactive substances on the catalyst for efficient energy transfer and photothermocatalysis of acetone and NO with free-ammonia under 5 vol% H2O were investigated. The conversion of NO and acetone was 75% and 65%, respectively, for C-5/1 (organic ligand was added and Co/Mn molar ratios of 5/1) at 240 °C. The best catalytic performance was obtained for the L-Py sample (photoactive substance was added), with NO conversion up to 80% and acetone up to 69% at 240 °C. The catalyst possessed a low crystallinity that would produce structural defects based on the introduction of ligands to adjust the ratio of active components. Meanwhile, the catalytic performance could be further enhanced by the scattering of light energy in the inner space/vacancy of the microspheres, which 2.17 eV energy was efficient transferred by adding two kinds of photoactive substances. The high concentration of surface-active oxygen facilitated the oxidation reaction, and the surface oxygen in the photothermal low-temperature response can also be provided by the Mn/Mn+1 redox cycle. Finally, the mechanism of simultaneous degradation of acetone and NO was proposed by Density Functional theory calculations. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A Duality-Based Approach to Inverse Kalman Filtering

In this paper, the inverse Kalman filtering problem is addressed using a duality-based framework, where certain statistical properties of uncertainties in a dynamical model are recovered from observations of its posterior estimates. The duality relation in inverse filtering and inverse optimal control is established. It is shown that the inverse Kalman filtering problem can be solved using results from a well-posed inverse linear quadratic regulator. Identifiability of the considered inverse filtering model is proved and a unique covariance matrix is recovered by a least squares estimator, which is also shown to be statistically consistent. Effectiveness of the proposed methods is illustrated by numerical simulations.

In this article, we introduce a time-delay approach to gradient-based extremum seeking (ES) in the continuous domain for n-dimensional (nD) static quadratic maps. As in the recently introduced (for 2D maps in the continuous domain), we transform the system to the time-delay one (neutral type system). This system is $\mathbf{O}(\varepsilon)$ . ‘perturbation of the averaged linear ODE system. We further explicitly present the neutral system as the linear ODE, where $\mathrm{O}(\varepsilon)$ -terms are considered as disturbances with distributed delays of the length of the small parameter $\varepsilon$ . Quantitative (for uncertain map) and qualitative (for unknown map) practical stability analyses are provided by employing a variation of constants formula that greatly simplifies the results compared to the previously used Lyapunov-Krasovskii (L-K) method. The new approach also simplifies the conditions and improves the results. Examples from the literature illustrate the efficiency of the new approach, allowing essentially large uncertainty of the Hessian matrix with bounds on $\varepsilon$ that are not too small.

Globally, there exists a serious phenomenon of organic and inorganic pollution in the soil. When the two are combined, the composite pollution becomes more complex and harder to repair. This study simulates arsenic-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon composite pollution in soil and studies the effect and characteristics of microbial remediation of arsenic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon contaminated soil under the condition of electricity. Experimental results demonstrated that the domesticated Alcaligenes faecalis subsp. faecalis exhibited a degradation rate of 75.65% for phenanthrene and a reduction rate of 18.36% for As(V), displaying high resistance to both arsenic and phenanthrene. Compared to the non-electrified condition, the total residual arsenic in the soil was significantly reduced after applying an electric field, and the proportion of residual arsenic rose to 79.54%, thus reducing the biological toxicity of the soil. The electric drive also enhanced the degradation and removal rate of phenanthrene by microorganisms in the soil, reaching a maximum of 55.93% in the S4 region. Meanwhile, the soil dehydrogenase activity in the S2 region could be increased to a maximum of 0.65 ug/ml·h·g. Analysis of the microbial community changes before and after electrical remediation revealed significant increases in the relative abundances of Proteobacteria and Firmicutes at the phylum level. At the genus level, the relative abundance of Alcaligenes sp., as the dominant species, increased fivefold. In summary, the electrically-enhanced microbial remediation technique developed in this study provides an efficient and environmentally friendly new method for the effective treatment of arsenic and PAHs compound contaminated soil, which holds significant importance for the remediation of such contaminated soils. © 2024, The Authors. In this paper, firstly, to overcome the shortcoming of traditional ARX model, a new operator between an interval number and a real matrix is defined, and then it is applied to the traditional ARX model to get a new type of structure interval ARX model that can deal with interval data, which is defined as interval ARX model (IARX). Secondly, the IARX model is applied to moving pattern-based modeling. For better characterizing pattern moving space, the "cardinality" of pattern moving space (CPMS) is defined. Finally, to verify the validity of the proposed modeling method, it is applied to a sintering process. The simulation results show the moving pattern-based modeling using the new type of interval ARX model is robust to variation in parameters of the model, and the performance of the modeling using the proposed IARX is superior to that of the previous work. © 2023, CC BY.

The exoskeleton is usually assisted by the sensor detects the moment of assist, and the assist function generates the value of the assisted force according to the time and generates the corresponding force through the motor. Among them, the determination of the exoskeleton assistance moment plays an important role in the generation of a reasonable exoskeleton curve. To this end, this paper proposes an improved method based on the variable window for determining the assistance moment of exoskeleton. The method firstly improves the way of window sliding, secondly adjusts the way of window size selection, and finally experiments confirm that the method reduces the number of operations by 29%~47% in different motion modes.
