This comparative study between two topologies of three-phase grid-connected photovoltaic inverters, namely the single-stage inverter and the two-stage inverter, was modeled and simulated using Matlab Simulink. The control of the two-level inverter is by the synchronous reference frame method, and the tracker of the PV array power is by the incremental conductance MPPT algorithm. In this paper, performance analysis of PV grid-connected inverters based on the overall efficiency and harmonic distortion. The simulation results indicate satisfaction with the quality of the current and voltage inj ected into the electrical grid, where THD is according to the recommendations of the IEEE-519 standard, and both topologies are efficient, but the single-stage inverter performs better than the two-stage inverter.

This paper presents the design of supervisory model predictive control for HVAC systems with consideration of peak demand shaving and thermal comfort. In this work, we analyze the operating points with the thermal comfort requirement. Afterwards, we linearize the nonlinear dynamic model to a linear time-varying model. In particular, we specify that the operating point of the open-loop HVAC system satisfies the thermal comfort condition. This makes the predicted mean vote (PMV) equal to zero or nearly to zero. Subsequently, we calculate the zone temperature, the zone humidity ratio, and the volumetric flow rate. When considering the time-varying disturbance profiles, it appears that the operating points are time-varying. We observe that the coefficient of performance (COP) and the operating points are time-varying which lead to time-varying model. Moreover, we design supervisory control (SC) and model predictive control (MPC) for linear time-varying model. In the SC design, we aim to find the optimal reference zone temperature which is used as the reference signal for MPC. In the MPC design, the objectives are twofold. First, the zone temperature tracks the reference signal. Second, both electrical energy cost and deviation of desired thermal comfort are minimized. The computer simulation shows that MPC of time-varying HVAC system yields the best reference tracking. In addition, it reduces total electrical energy cost the most. We conclude that the optimal temperature reference can be effectively applied to the building HVAC systems while the occupants feel comfortable and the total electrical energy cost is the lowest.

A novel solid-state transformer, the bipolar-type modular solid-state transformer (BM-SST), is proposed to extend a bipolar type LVDC port from the modular multilevel converter-based solid-state transformer (MMC-SST). Compared with MMC-SST, BM-SST has the advantages of flexible power supply, high reliability and high safety. In particular, both arm voltage regulation (AVR) control and active circulating current injection (ACCI) control are used to cope with the unbalanced power between the positive and negative ports of the LVDC. The two control schemes are selected according to the different load conditions. However, the transition process between the two control schemes have not been investigated, which will affect the dynamic performance of BMSST. This paper proposes a seamless control based on state follower to achieve the seamless switching between AVR and ACCI. The proposed scheme has the advantages of good dynamic performance and simple control design. Finally, the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified by a 1MW BM-SST simulation model based on Simulink MATLAB. © 2023 IEEE.

The operation of most wastewater treatment systems is an open-loop system. There is limited feedback control of membrane bioreactors (MBR) which makes it impossible to regulate the quality of the treated water. The objectives of this paper are twofold. First, we analyze the equilibrium point of the MBR nonlinear model. Second, we utilize output feedback control with state observer and design optimal PID controllers. We determine the optimum equilibrium point and derive a linearized model of MBR. Then, we design the state observer to estimate the non-measurable state using the pole placement method. Both the measurable output and estimated state are fed back through PID controller. The objectives of PID control consist of stabilization and performance improvement. Genetic Algorithm is applied to find the optimal PID parameters that minimize the integral of absolute error and satisfy the specified time-domain criteria. We apply the observer-based PID controller to the linearized model of MBR. Numerical results demonstrate the design of PID controller and the improvement of the closed-loop response and quality of the treated water.

An optical fiber-based sensor in the configuration of single-multi-single (SMS) modes structure is proposed to detect polyethylene microplastic particles inside aquatic environments via the interaction of light at the interface of optical fiber and the microplastic solutions. Microplastics negatively affect biological systems since living creatures may consume the pollutant. The data on the relationship between the transmittance spectrum and its corresponding wavelength value can be used to correlate and identify the concentration of the microplastic solution. Deposition of gold on the sensing region through sputtering is investigated to improve the sensitivity and reliability of the SMS sensor. This suggests the potential for a gold-coated SMS sensor for in-situ, low-cost and real-time microplastic sensing applications.

This article presents a comparative study of two topologies of three-phase photovoltaic inverters connected to the grid, between the usual two-level inverter and three-level NPC (Neutral Point Clamped) inverter. Inverter control and the boost converter MPPT controller are based on the SRF-dq method and the INC algorithm respectively. The comparison relies on evaluating the overall efficiency and harmonic distortion of the inverter. All circuits are modeled and simulated using Matlab-Simulink. The results obtained indicate satisfaction with the quality, of the current and voltage injected into the electrical grid, and reflect that both inverters are efficient and comply with IEEE-519 standard recommendations, but the three-level inverter performs better results than the two-level inverter.

Optimizing regenerative braking systems in electric vehicles presents a complex challenge requiring precise and adaptable control. This research proposes employing K-Means Clustering to the Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Logic (IT2FL) membership functions, thereby improving overall regenerative braking efficiency and enhancing driving range. This research demonstrates that implementing a K-Means in the IT2FL control system in electric vehicles effectively recovers 35.84% of energy. By incorporating a K-means-based approach, the IT2FL controller further enhances vehicle range by 43 kilometers, achieving a total range of 108 kilometers. In comparison, an IT2FL system without K-means recovered only 26.67% of energy and achieved a total range of 93 kilometers. Notably, the IT2FL controller with K-means enabled the electric vehicle to attain an energy efficiency of 22 kilometers per kilowatt-hour. These findings underscore the significant improvement in maximum range offered by the IT2FL controller with K-means compared to alternative methods.

Modular multilevel converter (MMC) based solid state transformer (MMC-SST) shows promise in hybrid AC/DC distribution grid. This paper introduces a topology consisting of cells made of directly coupled MMC sub-modules (SMs) and isolated SAB modules forming a multi-port SST for grid interconnection. Due to the large SM capacitors for low frequency fluctuation power handling, the device power density is low, which will limit its application. This paper proposes an MMC-SST SM capacitor optimization method based on fluctuation power delivery. It reduces the equivalent low frequency impedance of the SAB by parallel virtual impedance. Low frequency fluctuation power will be delivered into SAB circuit and naturally eliminated in low-voltage DC side due to three-phase symmetrical MMC-SST structure. Therefore, the SM capacitance could be optimized where the power fluctuation flowing into it are reduced. The feasibility of the proposed method is verified by a simulation model. © 2023 IEEE.

An optical fiber sensor with a single mode-multimode-single mode (SMS) structure is proposed to detect ethanol vapor ranging between 100–500 ppm via the evanescent field interaction at the interface between the optical fiber and ethanol vapor. The proposed optical fiber sensor offers real-time and non-invasive monitoring of ethanol vapor, which is one of the biomarkers of diabetes. Molecular imprinted polymer (MIP) is coated at a multimode fiber region, which is considered to be a sensing area, to improve the selectivity of the ethanol biomarker. The sensor works based on wavelength interrogation by detecting the change in wavelength due to the change in vapor concentration. The fabricated sensor has a sensitivity of 0.0013 nm/ppm, which suggests the potential to be used as a monitoring device for breath analysis.
