The Elimination lemma provides analysis conditions that constitute a fundamental tool in obtaining state space solutions of robust control design problems. Using operator theoretical concepts, the paper provides a derivation of the Elimination lemma based on a contractive extension principle and to give a Krein space geometric interpretation of the result. In this way the statement of the lemma is related to general techniques, like interpolation and commutant lifting theory. This result is considered to be an initial step in the control relevant formulation of the lemma in an infinite dimensional setting.

The paper provides a formulation of the quadratic separator result in a fairly general input-output operator framework and it focuses on the specific points that are different compared to the usual finite dimensional formulations. The major contribution of the paper is to emphasize the role of the causality in obtaining the stability result having a quadratic separator and the fact that the plant and the boundedness constant in the formulation of the well-posedness condition determine the robust stability domain associated to the given plant, i.e., the set of those systems {κ} that stabilizes the given plant and produce the given "disturbance rejection" level γ. Concerning the causality issue the necessity of the homotopy argument in the IQC results is also explained and its relation with a general result concerning nest algebras is pointed out.

The current research represents a first step towards developing a flexible, decentralized network of small and inexpensive, battery powered unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), which could be used for a variety of scientific missions where measurements from a distributed network of nodes could significantly improve the assessment (e.g. chemical or dust clouds, mapping particulates, chemical content and physical boundaries of a dispersed volcanic plume or vog). Individual UAVs are equipped with on board sensing equipment as well as autopilot and networking nodes for communication between each UAV and the ground station and between UAVs to relaying the data between individual UAVs when lack of direct line of sight prevents communication. The UAVs are built using off the shelf components, which allows rapid replacement of damaged items and lowers significantly the overall price (less than $500 for each instrumented UAV), resulting in a practically disposable fleet of UAVs. In the current paper we use a pair of UAVs and a hardware in the loop computer simulation to test the feasibility of the proposed concept. Each UAV is instrumented with GPS, humidity, temperature and particle sensors as well as XBee network communication links.

The class of isotherm lumped process systems with constant overall mass in each of its balance volumes is considered in this paper. It is shown that the convection and transfer mechanisms can be described by a mass action law chemical reaction network (MAL CRN) with only linear kinetics where the in- and outflow terms are represented using the zero complex. This gives rise to a convection and transfer reaction sub-graph that connects atomic complexes consisting of the components in the balance volumes of the system. The real chemical reactions in each of the balance volumes can be described by their own CRNs, where the chemical reaction sub-graphs may be disconnected from the convection and transfer reaction sub-graph when nonlinear reactions occur. In the case of chemical reactions with a finite number of steady state points, the underlying linear dynamical system enables us to construct a dynamically similar linear overall reaction graph for the whole process system. The resulting overall reaction graph can be used for structural stability analysis by applying its graph theoretical properties.

This paper presents the three-dimensional temperature measurement of an oxy-gas burner flame based on optical tomographic and two-color techniques. Eight two-dimensional (2-D) image projections of the flame are obtained concurrently by multiple imaging fiber bundles and imaging sensors. The LFBP (Logical Filtered Back-Projection) algorithm combined the SART (Simultaneous Algebraic Reconstruction Technique) is utilized to reconstruct the gray-level intensity of the flame based on its 2-D images. The flame temperature distribution is then determined using the reconstructed gray-levels through the two-color pyrometry. Experiments were undertaken under different oxy-fuel conditions. The results show that the flame temperature increases with the O 2 concentration and that the temperature distribution of the oxy-fuel flame is more uniform at the root region than that at other regions.

The paper proposes the control design of a driver assistance system in which the operations of the active control systems are in cooperation with the driver's actions. The vehicle dynamics is determined by the driver while the handling of lateral dynamics in crucial situations is assisted by the control systems. Monitoring and considering the driver's activities are crucial, since the driver is incorporated in the vehicle in a complex closed-loop system and the active components only assist the driver requirements. The control systems generate a brake yaw moment and an additional steering angle when the driver alone is not able to guarantee trajectory tracking. In the control-oriented model the interactions between the driver and the vehicle are formed. The control design in which the performance specifications and priority between the active components are handled is based on the LPV method.

In a series of paper the authors proposed a new frequency-domain approach to identify poles in discrete-time linear systems. The discrete rational transfer function is represented in a rational Laguerre-basis, where the basis elements are expressed by powers of the Blaschke-function. This function can be interpreted as a congruence transform on the Poincaré unit disc model of the hyperbolic geometry. The identification of a pole is given as a hyperbolic transform of the limit of a quotient-sequence formed from the Laguerre-Fourier coefficients. In this paper the opportunities of reliably computing the poles are analyzed, and some algorithms are proposed for practical use.

This paper concerns application of data-derived approaches for analyzing and monitoring chemical process instruments, extracting product information, and designing estimation models for primary process variables, or difficult to measure in real-time variables. Modeling of process with an optimized classical neural network, the multi-layer perceptron (MLP) is discussed. Tennessee Eastman Process, a well-known plant wide process benchmark, is applied to validate the proposed approach. Investigations and several algorithms as step response test, Lipschitz number method and forward selection are used. The main advancement introduced here is that a hierarchical level responsible strategy is applied for selection of input variables and respective efficient time delays to attain the highest possible prediction accuracy of the neural network model for industrial process identification.
