This paper proposes a simple method to determine the laser beam wandering and scattering in free space optics. The main application of this method is to determine the dimensions of a device required to compensate for beam wandering and scattering due to the air turbulences in FSO communications. The method uses color image analysis for automatic determination of the shape of the laser spot, which provides information about the spot area and the maximum amplitude of beam wandering. Results show that when the spot is photographed on a non-colored paper screen, the method is able to determine the laser spot shape accurately. Moreover, the method is robust to the variation of the screen background illumination.

This study describes three different data mining techniques for detecting abnormal lighting energy consumption using hourly recorded energy consumption and peak demand (maximum power) data. Two outliers’ detection methods are applied to each class and cluster for detecting abnormal consumption in the same data set. In each class and cluster with anomalous consumption the amount of variation from normal is determined using modified standard scores. The study will be helpful for building energy management systems to reduce operating cost and time by not having to detect faults manually or diagnose false warnings. In addition, it will be useful for developing fault detection and diagnosis model for the whole building energy consumption.

This paper proposes a simple universal index for on-line quantitative assessment of flame stability. The proposed index has a dynamic range of [0, 1] and is designed by combining the dynamic characteristics of seven parameters extracted from flame images in HSI color space. It assesses the flame stability in terms of color, geometry and luminance. Experiments were carried out on a 9MW th heavy-oil-fired combustion test facility. The impact of the swirl vanes on the stability of a heavy oil flame is investigated. The results obtained demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach to quantitative flame stability assessment.

A weighted summation of Integral of Time Multiplied Absolute Error (ITAE) and Integral of Squared controller Output (ISCO) minimization based time domain optimal tuning of fractional-order (FO) PID or PI λ D μ controller is proposed in this paper with a Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) based technique that minimizes the change in trajectories of the state variables and the control signal. A class of fractional order systems having single non-integer order element which show highly sluggish and oscillatory open loop responses have been tuned with an LQR based FOPID controller. The proposed controller design methodology is compared with the existing time domain optimal tuning techniques with respect to change in the trajectory of state variables, tracking performance for change in set-point, magnitude of control signal and also the capability of load disturbance suppression. A real coded genetic algorithm (GA) has been used for the optimal choice of weighting matrices while designing the quadratic regulator by minimizing the time domain integral performance index. Credible simulation studies have been presented to justify the proposition.

In this paper, the state estimation problem is investigated for a class of discrete-time stochastic systems in simultaneous presence of three network-induced phenomena, namely, fading measurements, randomly varying nonlinearities and probabilistic distributed delays. The channel fading is characterized by the ℓ th-order Rice fading model whose coefficients are mutually independent random variables with given probability density functions. Two sequences of random variables obeying the Bernoulli distribution are utilized to govern the randomly varying nonlinearities and probabilistic distributed delays. The purpose of the problem addressed is to design an state estimator such that the dynamics of the estimation errors is stochastically stable and the prespecified disturbance rejection attenuation level is guaranteed. Through intensive stochastic analysis, sufficient conditions are established under which the addressed state estimation problem is recast as a convex optimization one that can be solved via the semi-definite program method. Finally, a simulation example is provided to show the usefulness of the proposed state estimation scheme. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
