A joint exergy analysis/exergetic resilience approach for evaluation of suspension PVC production with VCM recovery

Suspension process is the main method of production of PVC, it is characterized by an intensive consumption of energy. Due to the ongoing climate crisis, the study of energy utilization of chemical processes has become relevant as a step to achieving sustainable operations. Therefore, an exergetic analysis is proposed to study the energy management of the PVC production process by suspension. The process was modelled using simulation software which allows the quantification of the extended mass and energy balances of the process and the thermodynamic properties of pure substances and mixtures. From this information chemical and physical exergies were obtained; exergy parameters were calculated per stage and for the whole process. The analysis showed that the process has efficient energy management with an efficiency of 79.6%, showing that most of the exergy inputs remain in the product stream, with irreversibilities of 236.798 MJ/h of mostly unavoidable losses (80%). It was found that the drying and VCM recovery stages presented poor performance, the drying stage had the highest irreversibilities (75,618 MJ/h) associated with avoidable losses (wastes) with 46,488 MJ/h. The VCM recovery section presented the lowest exergy efficiency (84%) due to mainly unavoidable losses (45,268 MJ/h). Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis was performed, valorizing the process waste, resulting in an increase in efficiency up to 84% and a reduction in irreversibilities to 56%. Also, improving the recovery section would increase global efficiency by up to 95%. However, the unavoidable losses are the main source of exergy destruction of the process; reducing them has the potential to increase efficiency significantly, so it is recommended to expand the analysis to study the service streams (heating, fuel, and refrigerants) together with energy integration.

In practical satellite-based quantum key distribution (QKD) systems, the preparation and transmission of polarization-encoding photons suffer from complex environmental effects and high channel-loss. Consequently, the hinge to enhancing the secure key rate (SKR) lies in achieving robust, low-error and high-speed polarization modulation. Although the schemes that realize self-compensation exhibit remarkable robustness. Their modulation speed is constrained to approximately 2 GHz to avoid the interaction between the electrical signal and the reverse optical pulses. Here we utilize the non-reciprocity of the lithium niobate modulators and eliminate the modulation on the reverse optical pulses. As this characteristic is widely available in the radio-frequency band, the modulation speed is no longer limited by the self-compensating optics and can be further increased. The measured average intrinsic QBER of the different polarization states at 10 GHz system repetition frequency is as low as 0.53% over 10 min without any compensation. And the experiment simulation shows that the proposed scheme extends the transmission distance to more than 350 km. Our work can be be efficient performed to the high-speed and high-loss satellite-based quantum communication scenario. © 2024, CC BY.

This paper addresses the problem of simultaneously exploring an unknown object to model its shape, using tactile sensors on robotic fingers, while also improving finger placement to optimise grasp stability. In many situations, a robot will have only a partial camera view of the near side of an observed object, for which the far side remains occluded. We show how an initial grasp attempt, based on an initial guess of the overall object shape, yields tactile glances of the far side of the object which enable the shape estimate and consequently the successive grasps to be improved. We propose a grasp exploration approach using a probabilistic representation of shape, based on Gaussian Process Implicit Surfaces. This representation enables initial partial vision data to be augmented with additional data from successive tactile glances. This is combined with a probabilistic estimate of grasp quality to refine grasp configurations. When choosing the next set of finger placements, a bi-objective optimisation method is used to mutually maximise grasp quality and improve shape representation during successive grasp attempts. Experimental results show that the proposed approach yields stable grasp configurations more efficiently than a baseline method, while also yielding improved shape estimate of the grasped object. The classical theory of signal processing assumes that the designed IIR filters are continuous and have infinitely accurate coefficients. However, when developing filters for real-world digital signal processing tasks, it is necessary to take into account the finite precision of the coefficients representation, especially considering the fixed-point arithmetic. In this paper, we propose a new approach, which we call the interval size approach, making it easy to evaluate the actual digital filter response for various fixed-point arithmetic parameters. We provide Illustrative examples to demonstrate the frequency response bounds evolution as an order, cutoff frequency, and signal frequency are varying. We show that the interval size can be used as a well-suited accuracy factor of a digital filter. © 2020 IEEE.

—With the rapid development of autonomous driving, collision avoidance has attracted attention from both academia and industry. Many collision avoidance strategies have emerged in recent years, but the dynamic and complex nature of driving environment poses a challenge to develop robust collision avoidance algorithms. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a decentralized framework named RACE: Reinforced Cooperative Autonomous Vehicle Collision AvoidancE. Leveraging a hierarchical architecture we develop an algorithm named Co-DDPG to efficiently train autonomous vehicles. Through a security abiding channel, the autonomous vehicles distribute their driving policies. We use the relative distances obtained by the opponent sensors to build the VANET instead of locations, which ensures the vehicle’s location privacy. With a leader-follower architecture and parameter distribution, RACE accelerates the learning of optimal policies and efficiently utilizes the remaining resources. We implement the RACE framework in the widely used TORCS simulator and conduct various experiments to measure the performance of RACE. Evaluations show that RACE quickly learns optimal driving policies and effectively avoids collisions. Moreover, RACE also scales smoothly with varying number of participating vehicles. We further compared RACE with existing autonomous driving systems and show that RACE outperforms them by experiencing 65% less collisions in the training process and exhibits improved performance under varying vehicle density. Active reconfigurable intelligent surface (ARIS) is a promising way to compensate for multiplicative fading attenuation by amplifying and reflecting event signals to selected users. This paper investigates the performance of ARIS assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks over cascaded Nakagami-m fading channels. The effects of hardware impairments (HIS) and reflection coefficients on ARIS-NOMA networks with imperfect successive interference cancellation (ipSIC) and perfect successive interference cancellation (pSIC) are considered. More specifically, we develop new precise and asymptotic expressions of outage probability and ergodic data rate with ipSIC/pSIC for ARIS-NOMA-HIS networks. According to the approximated analyses, the diversity orders and multiplexing gains for couple of non-orthogonal users are attained in detail. Additionally, the energy efficiency of ARIS-NOMA-HIS networks is surveyed in delay-limited and delay-tolerant transmission schemes. The simulation findings are presented to demonstrate that: i) The outage behaviors and ergodic data rates of ARIS-NOMA-HIS networks precede that of ARIS aided orthogonal multiple access (OMA) and passive reconfigurable intelligent surface (PRIS) aided OMA;ii) As the reflection coefficient of ARIS increases, ARIS-NOMA-HIS networks have the ability to provide the strengthened outage performance;and iii) ARIS-NOMA-HIS networks are more energy efficient than ARIS/PRIS-OMA networks and conventional cooperative schemes. There is little room for doubt that distributed generation systems including renewable energy, microgrids (MGs), combined heat and power (CHP) units and storage systems have been of particular importance in sustaining low-carbon and cost-effective operations due to the tremendous increase in greenhouse gas emissions in recent years. Additionally, hydrogen-based power technologies have earned a great deal of publicity that hydrogen can serve as a zero-emission fuel for electrical power and thermal energy production. In this regard, the current paper proposes an optimal energy management strategy for a combined hydrogen, heat, and power MG (CHHP-MG) with hydrogen fueling stations (HFSs) for hydrogen vehicles (HVs), electric vehicle parking lots (EVPLs) and fuel cell micro-CHP (FC-MCHP) units to meet power and heat requirements. In order to reduce the regular operating expense, the presented CHHP-MG could also communicate with both electricity and hydrogen markets. In addition, to compensate for the associated heat and hydrogen requirements, power-to-X technologies such as the power to heat (P2HT) and power to hydrogen (P2H) are integrated. In order to improve flexibility and build a low carbon MG, multi-energy storage (MES) system along with heat and power demand response (HPDR) programs will be taken into consideration. As the uncertainties associated with the predicted wind and photovoltaic power have a major impact on the energy management of the CHHP-MG, a multi-objective information gap decision theory (IGDT)-based robust approach is applied as an effective non-probabilistic modeling technique for handling such uncertainties. The empirical results show that the proposed model can efficiently handle the uncertainties and reduce the overall operation cost by 76.35%. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

Coal-fired power plants are usually equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions. In this paper, we considered both the denitrification cost of the SCR system and the coal burning cost of the boiler to develop an operation cost model. Furthermore, the genetic algorithm was proposed to minimize the total operation cost by optimizing the feature parameters, including the primary air pressure, secondary air volume, overheated air volume, and NH3 injection volume. Simulation experiments were performed based on the operating data of a 1000 MW coal-fired power plant, with results showing that the total operating cost of the boiler and SCR was lowered. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
