The implementation of robotics and human support technologies has opened up new possibilities for recovering the mobility impaired and increasing human productivity in the last few decades. Exoskeletons have been developed as a major component of this progress in order to capture any form of arm motion be it passive or active. Motion capture systems, employing different sensors like IMU sensors, EMG sensors, motion sensors, fiber optic sensors are used to capture arm movements. These sensors provide information on position, movement, muscle contraction, and movement intent of the arm. The use of multiple sensor types allows for redundancy and accurate outcomes. Potentiometer position sensor can be combined with other types of sensors to measure acceleration, orientation, force exerted and arm bendability. The combinations improve accuracy and adaptability for arm motion capture during rehabilitation. Various combinations of adapted sensors can be used for each joint of the hand depending on the peculiarities of application. Sensors enable precise and natural control over recovery devices or exoskeletons which is especially important in terms of rehabilitation process improvement. © 2024 IEEE.

Two of the most impressive features of biological neural networks are their high energy efficiency and their ability to continuously adapt to varying inputs. On the contrary, the amount of power required to train top-performing deep learning models rises as they become more complex. This is the main reason for the increasing research interest in spiking neural networks, which mimic the functioning of the human brain achieving similar performances to artificial neural networks, but with much lower energy costs. However, even this type of network is not provided with the ability to incrementally learn new tasks, with the main obstacle being catastrophic forgetting. This paper investigates memory replay as a strategy to mitigate catastrophic forgetting in spiking neural networks. Experiments are conducted on the MNIST-split dataset in both class-incremental learning and task-free continual learning scenarios. © 2023 IEEE.

We consider word-of-mouth social learning involving m Kalman filter agents that operate sequentially. The first Kalman filter receives the raw observations, while each subsequent Kalman filter receives a noisy measurement of the conditional mean of the previous Kalman filter. The prior is updated by the m-th Kalman filter. When m=2, and the observations are noisy measurements of a Gaussian random variable, the covariance goes to zero as k-1/3 for 7kappa;observations, instead of O(k-1) in the standard Kalman filter. In this paper we prove that for m agents, the covariance decreases to zero as k-(2m-1), i.e, the learning slows down exponentially with the number of agents. We also show that by artificially weighing the prior at each time, the learning rate can be made optimal as k-1. The implication is that in word-of-mouth social learning, artificially re-weighing the prior can yield the optimal learning rate. © 2024 IEEE.

Automated diagnosis has always been a challenging task to AI. When model-based diagnosis is adopted, a model of the system is required in order to generate a set of diagnoses based on a collection of observations, where a diagnosis is a set of faulty components or, more generally, a set of faults ascribed to components. An active system (AS) is an asynchronous, distributed discrete-event system, whose model consists of a topology (how components are connected to one another), and a communicating automaton for each component (the mode in which a component reacts to events). A problem afflicting all model-based approaches to diagnosis is a possibly large number of diagnoses explaining the observations, which may jeopardize the task of a diagnostician in charge of monitoring the system, owing to the cognitive overload raised by an overwhelming number of faulty scenarios to examine. This is exacerbated in critical application domains, where, under uncertain conditions, an artificial agent is supposed to perform recovery actions in real-time, even in the order of milliseconds, to possibly restore the system. To make diagnosis of ASs viable in critical, real-time application domains, a Smart Diagnosis Engine is presented, which is grounded on two heuristics: (1) if a diagnosis δ is a superset of a diagnosis δ′, then δ is ignored (minimality);(2) if the cardinality (number of faults) of a diagnosis δ is lower than the cardinality of a diagnosis δ′, then δ is generated before δ′ (sorting). Consequently, the diagnosis output consists in a sequence of minimal diagnoses that are generated in ascending order by cardinality. As indicated by the experimental results, the overall improvement is twofold: most likely diagnoses are generated upfront, thereby supporting real-time recovery actions;also, the abductive search in the behavior space of the AS is reduced considerably, owing to the pruning of the trajectories that will not generate minimal diagnoses, thereby resulting in an

Sleep covers approximately one-third of life, providing the necessary recovery to fundamental body functions. Sleep deprivation and poor sleep quality cause several side effects in everyday life;among others, the efficiency of the immune system progressively decreases, enhancing the arise of pathologies. Therefore, the evaluation of sleep quality is crucial for providing information about personal health status. However, a uniform and robust method for the assessment of sleep quality is still missing. In this preliminary study, Obstructive Sleep Apneas (OSAs), sleep macro pattern and sleep micro pattern are identified and then combined to provide a comprehensive sleep evaluation. For this purpose, a subset of physiological variables (HR, HRV, SpO2, body movements) is derived from Polysomnography (PSG) and exploited for the development of rule-based algorithms. This reduced parameter set is selected considering further implementations on wearable off-the-shelf commercial devices. © 2023 IEEE.

Fixed-time-synchronized control: a system-dimension-categorized approach

This study addresses the fixed-time-synchronized control problem of perturbed multi-input multioutput(MIMO) systems. In the task of fixed-time-synchronized control, different dimensions of the output signal in MIMO systems are required to reach the desired value simultaneously within a fixed time *** MIMO system is categorized into two cases: the input-dimension-dominant and the state-dimensiondominant cases. The classification is defined according to the dimension of system signals and, more importantly, the capability of converging at the same time. For each kind of MIMO system, sufficient Lyapunov conditions for fixed-time-synchronized convergence are explored, and the corresponding robust sliding mode controllers are designed. Moreover, perturbations are compensated using the super-twisting technique. The brake control of the vertical takeoff and landing aircraft is considered to verify the proposed method for the input-dimension-dominant case, which shows the essential advantages of decreasing the energy consumption and the output trajectory length. Furthermore, comparative numerical simulations are performed to show the semi-time-synchronized property for the state-dimension-dominant case.

With the rapid development of smart grid technology, more and more attention has been paid to the stability of the power grid. When the power grid fails, the dispatch center will receive various types of data, including the PMU data collected by the PMU (Power Management Unit) device used by the Wide Area Monitoring System (WAMS) and the data collected by the Supervisory control System for Data Acquisition and control (SCADA). Alarm information data, they describe the same grid fault from different dimensions. At present, the power grid fault diagnosis based on PMU data and alarm information texts has been fully studied, but the information source is single, and it is difficult to ensure the accuracy of the diagnosis results when complex faults and multiple faults occur in the power grid. This paper starts with the information source of power grid fault diagnosis, and develops a power grid fault diagnosis method that integrates the dual data sources of PMU and alarm information: 1. effectively connect alarm message text and PMU based on fault events. 2. complete the fusion of PMU and alarm information to improve the scope and accuracy of power grid fault diagnosis. Finally, the simulation fault data is used to test. The experimental results show that the accuracy of fault diagnosis of dual data source fusion is higher than that of single data. © 2023 SPIE.

Graph neural network (GNN) has gained increasing popularity in recent years owing to its capability and flexibility in modeling complex graph structure data. Among all graph learning methods, hypergraph learning is a technique for exploring the implicit higher-order correlations when training the embedding space of the graph. In this paper, we propose a hypergraph learning framework named Learning from Heterogeneity (LFH) that is capable of dynamic hyperedge construction and attentive embedding update utilizing the heterogeneity attributes of the graph. Specifically, in our framework, the high-quality features are first generated by the pairwise fusion strategy that utilizes explicit graph structure information when generating initial node embedding. Afterwards, a hypergraph is constructed through the dynamic grouping of implicit hyperedges, followed by the type-specific hypergraph learning process. To evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed framework, we conduct comprehensive experiments on several popular datasets with twelve state-of-the- art models on both node classification and link prediction tasks, which fall into categories of homogeneous pairwise graph learning, heterogeneous pairwise graph learning, and hypergraph learning. The experiment results demonstrate a significant performance gain (an average of 12.9% in node classification and 12.8% in link prediction) compared with recent state-of-the-art methods. © 2020 IEEE.

In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, visual impairment poses significant challenges for approximately 17.5% of school-aged children, mainly due to refractive errors. These challenges extend to everyday navigation, environmental interaction, and overall life quality. Motivated by the desire to empower visually impaired individuals, who face navigational limitations, difficulties in object recognition, and inadequate assistance from traditional technologies, we propose SightAid. This innovative wearable vision system utilizes a deep learning-based framework, addressing the gaps left by current assistive solutions. Traditional methods, such as canes and GPS devices, often fail to meet the nuanced and dynamic needs of the visually impaired, especially in accurately identifying objects, understanding complex environments, and providing essential real-time feedback for independent navigation. SightAid comprises a seven-phase framework involving data collection, preprocessing, and training of a sophisticated deep neural network with multiple convolutional and fully connected layers. This system is integrated into smart glasses with augmented reality displays, enabling real-time object detection and recognition. Interaction with users is facilitated through audio or haptic feedback, informing them about the location and type of objects detected. A continuous learning mechanism, incorporating user feedback and new data, ensures the system's ongoing refinement and adaptability. For performance assessment, we utilized the MNIST dataset, and an Indoor Objects Detection dataset tailored for the visually impaired, featuring images of everyday objects crucial for safe indoor navigation. SightAid demonstrates remarkable performance with accuracy up to 0.9874, recall values between 0.98 and 0.99, F1-scores ranging from 0.98 to 0.99, and AUC-ROC values reaching as high as 0.9999. In this paper, we have identified two primary issues with current multi-scale image deblurring methods. On the one hand, the blurring scale is ignored. On the other hand, the context information of images is not fully utilized, and the spatial detail information of images is lost. To better solve the above problems, on top of that, this paper proposes a multi-scale network for single image deblurring. The designed network contains two parts: 1) Ensemble Learning Model: The Weak Learning Model in this module connects multiple weak learners in series to increase network depth. Moreover, through multi-scale feature ensemble module, the output features and intermediate features of different weak learner are integrated, and finally strong learner is used to enhance the features with semantic information at different scales;2) Spatial Feature Enhancement Module: This module can preserve spatial detail information of images and compensate for the disadvantages of losing image spatial details due to continuous downsampling in the Ensemble Learning Model structure. Our proposed deblurring model has been extensively evaluated on several benchmark datasets, and the model achieves superior performance compared to the most advanced deblurring methods. In particular, the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity index measure (SSIM) values are 33.57 dB and 0.965 on the GoPro dataset, respectively, with PSNR and SSIM improving by 0.49 dB and 0.002 over NAFNet, and 0.65 dB and 0.004 over Restormer. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.
